The Cabin in the Woods (2012) ✦ Reaction & Review ✦ I was NOT expecting this!

Ойын-сауық

This is a horror movie reaction to my first time watching The Cabin in the Woods, released in 2012 and directed by Drew Goddard. I definitely didn't realize this was more of a horror comedy, but I had a great time! All the actors were fantastic and it was cool seeing Chris Hemsworth and Jesse Williams together in a movie. Marty was 100% my favourite. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching! Let me know YOUR thoughts in the comments below!

There's another really heady one from this era based on a book called John Dies at the End. It's about other dimensions and human perception, but definitely a horror comedy, with plenty of gory bits common in the genre. I think what made this movie work as a good horror comedy was the actual horror and kills weren't actually played for laughs, every character was playing all the horror straight

I love the inference that we the audience are in fact the Old Gods who need to be appeased, because we're the ones watching a group of people die gorily for pleasure, whenever we watch a horror movie. We're the ones who understand the film narratives and expect the tropes to play out a specific way.

I really enjoy that the gimmick is presented up front, and distracts from the twist, which is that all the kids are sacrificed wrong - Dana is the 'wh*re', sleeping with her married professor Jules is the fool, always joking around Curt is the scholar, as he is more well read on a subject than a professor of that subject Holden is the athlete, catching a blind pass from across the street And Marty is the virgin, who briefly dated Jules but 'nothing happened'

@LordVolkov that's a really good spot and anyone rewatching it will be able to see what you mean. Dana sleeping with her prof is right at the start and mentioned again when she's kissing Holden. Marty actually refers to Curt being a scholar(? Something similar) and asks when he became a jock and it was made clear Jules was being affected by her hair dye and wasn't the stereo typical, slasher "blonde bimbo". Marty pretty much said it himself, but I never got Holden as the jock until you said it... Kicking myself now because (in hindsight )it's so obvious, there was only one option!🙄😂

I was expecting something like Evil Dead, and while we did get parts of that, we also got a movie than not only poked fun at all the tropes and clichés of other horror movies, it also made it possible for all those other horror movies to exist in the same universe and explained why the characters in those movies always act in such a dumb way. It's a great idea executed almost perfectly.

This was a fun (and funny - definitely a horror comedy) look at horror movie tropes and meta commentary on the horror genre. There's a lot of references to other horror movies and games throughout (there was meant to be a Left 4 Dead movie tie in level made for the game, but it fell through when the movie got shelved for a couple of years, but you can see some of the L4D zombies in the monster warehouse if you look closely). On that note... Chris Hemsworth actually filmed this before he was chosen to play Thor, if memory serves, but the movie release got delayed for a couple of years, so Thor ended up coming out first.

Very interesting to see you come to this one with relatively little genre experience, and yet you followed its twists and turns much better than some other reactors I've seen. I'm not a horror fan, but I really enjoy this movie, which I saw in the theatres with a large group of Whedonverse/Firefly/Buffy fans (Drew Goddard was a writer on Buffy/Angel and Joss Whedon co-wrote and produced Cabin in the Woods). I'd describe the film as a deconstruction of the horror genre. And Marty is my favourite too. My fun fact is that I've been in those woods and seen that cabin. A lot of the movie was filmed in Robert Burnaby Park in the Vancouver area, and that's where they built the cabin. I wandered through the whole outdoor set one weekend when they weren't filming. The movie is less scary when you know there's a frisbee golf course just a few minutes walk from where the cabin sits. 😆

This film sat on the shelf for a few years because of a studio sale/bankruptcy (and a bad test screening I think). FYI - Marty is wearing a sweatshirt on the docks and generally wears baggy clothes because the actor who played him (Fran Kranz) was very ripped and muscular, which was not what his character was intended to be. People working on the movie referred to him as "ripped like a muscular Jesus".

I love this movie. And yes, it makes so much more sense early on when you're watching it a second time. Even the opening credits give everything away when you know, as they're all scenes of sacrifices. And yet when you first watch it, it's so mystifying until the "ahhh, I get it!" moment, which happens at different spots for different people. One of my favorite bits that nobody gets the first time through (because why would you) is that when Marty "dies" and they pull his lever, there's an earthquake. They brush it off, but it's the Ancient Ones getting grumpy because they were just told there was a sacrifice and there wasn't one. Marty is absolutely my favorite character. So many fun little touches, even from the very beginning when he reaches in through his open car window to lock the door, then checks the handle to make sure it's locked. And that coffee cup is legendary! Q: What sound does it make when you hit a zombie with a giant coffee cup? A: Bong. The list of monsters is quite amusing. One of them is simply "Kevin", no other information provided. Some have theorized that it's a nod to the movie "Sin City" - an amazing neo-noir black-and-white graphic novel brought to life, with an incredible cast - but I don't know if anyone knows for sure who or what Kevin is supposed to be. The vast majority of the other monsters are all either direct references to other horror movies, or something that seems sweet and innocent, like the Sugar Plum Fairy, where it's almost even worse that you know it turns nightmarish and horrible if it's chosen.

When he showed up on set, he had gotten completely jacked and ripped for a previous role. Chris Hemsworth had already auditioned for Thor by this point but hadn’t gotten it. Joss Whedon the writer told him to try out for Cap while Drew Goddard suggested he try again for Thor. The first Twilight movie was also shooting nearby in the same woods. And the guy who plays Marty “the fool” was actually so jacked physically that he looked as much of a jock as Jesse and Chris so he never takes his sweater or shirt off. Lots of the monsters are based off of various other movies like the guy with the weird ball and saw blade in his head is sort-of Pinhead from Hellraiser.

They need to placate us regularly and we will revolt if the tropes and conventions aren't followed. But that in the end, the old system needs to go. We need new horror, new rules, new stories. Time for the gods to rise up and destroy the system.

This is really unique in its main plot, you are not going to see other horror movies set up around this kind of meta horror ritual, anyway. What this IS full of is references to other horror movies, via the monsters and props used. When it comes to sequels, this essentially sets it up that nearly any movie could have been orchestrated by this group, we just don’t see the underground folks making it happen in most horror movies.

Finally, after having seen the original movie and reactions multiple times, I just realized the Buckners are probably picked often (I think it's said that they are) because the Omen / warning guy mentions an old Buckner place in reference to the road the group's looking for. So the name is in their head already. Plus the intrigue of a journal of course. Just a neat detail I never noticed. Edit: 🌲🏡🌲

This is a film that is great to watch if you have already watched a lot of other old horror movies. That shot of the whiteboard with all the possible monsters that could be summoned to attack this group of five is worth pausing and reading all of them. Many of them are references to creatures/killers from other classic (and non-classic) horror movies. For example, "angry molesting tree" is a reference to an infamous scene from Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead.

This film is so brilliant that it brings a tear to my eyes. If you know the horror genre, this film explains every single horror movie ever made... the little monsters like Freddy and Jason are absolutely nothing compared to the ancient horrors that actually run the show, and every horror movie you've ever seen, with their very specific archetypes, are all part of an ancient ritual to appease them.

  • @biguy617

When comes to the climax each monster they find in the monster cells is a reference to a different horror movie. The others are ones the movie created on its own. The Japanese monster is a reference to the Ring and The Grudge. The chainsaw head guy is a reference to Pinhead The Clown is Pennywise The masked people, The Strangers Werewolf is a reference to any Werewolf movie Merman creature from Black Lagoon The bat creature is a reference to vampire villain in Blade 2 I think the Unicorn is a reference to the movie Legend. The Snake is a Anaconda reference The Zombies the conjure are an Evil Dead reference. The person crawling on the ceiling, is a Exorcist reference The crazy Doctors are a reference to the Re-Animator I think.

Ok this is a fun theory. This movie is a story from an alternative earth. The SCP Foundation from that world was able to notify the SCP of our universe. What our universe decided was to put all of the SCP's into modern story's and films. They started the Creepy Pasta's about the SCP Foundation. They started the Twilight Zone, The War of the Worlds was a real thing but was eventually contained from the SCP foundation. All to help keep us all safe and have plausible denial. All the Bigfoot and paranormal footage that is out on the internet is real but with everything flooded with wild stories it can be denied by the general public.

I loved this movie because it was like, a horror movie wherein I usually wish they would have done something better, and this movie did exactly that. It kept going in a way that I wanted and kept me guessing and just, in reality, hit every button I needed pressed. I agree that it would be cool to see a sequel where there's a different sequence of events, but also agree that it could get real old real fast. I think we should just be glad we got this masterpiece of a movie we have and leave it at that.

I know a bunch of people who gave up on that series in the first few episodes (because let's be honest the whole premise of the Dollhouses is pretty darned creepy) and thus didn't get to where the truth about it starts to be revealed. And I think they really missed out. That was a fascinating show.

0:14 Ha! It's not just me. I skipped this movie for years because it sounded like yet another re-hashed "bunch of horny young'uns get hacked to pieces by Demons or Hill People" type. Then I noticed it was a Joss Whedon film so I gave it a shot, and Holy Motherforkin Shirtballs! It immediately became one of my all-time favourite horror movies, plus it features an amazing cast, including several Esteemed Alumni of the Whedonverse (plus Thor). ❤

Also, I do enjoy how this film is kind of an endorsement for smoking pot, Marty (Topher) is The Man.🤘 11:54 Kai ruminating upon the phrase "Husband's Bulge" 🤣 35:30 A Classic ending, right up until the last couple seconds, then we're back to "Holy Shirt!".

Even before I went to see it in the cinema, I knew I was gonna love it. Using the horror movie tropes as Easter eggs and clichés, how everyone is a normal person until they get affected and turn into stereotypes of the horror genre, the comedy, and it was made by the makers and writers of Buffy and the Buffyverse. Even some of the actors from the Buffyverse appeared. You can see it in the writing. From Buffy, to this, to The Avengers, all the comedy that's in the script is so familiar to me as a huge Buffy fan. And as a horror fan, I appreciate the callbacks to other horror movies, that I won't mention in case you haven't seen them yet. 😊 🏚🌲

My only problem with this movie was there's no possible way to do a sequel. This movie deserved at least a trilogy. Maybe not a full-blown, never-ending franchise, so as not to run it in the ground. This world would have been so much more fun to get to know and experience. Some of those curses would've been so awesome to get to see fleshed-out (yes, pun fully intended), and up close.

Loved the concept and would love to see it expanded upon as a stand-alone horror style where the group of sacrifices picks their own demise. Even a collection of short-films could be fun.

The idea of this one is that we are the Anciant Ones that directors do their best to please and make sure we like their movies because we have the power to make or brake the mobies they try to make. we expect all the usual things the Joke and the stupid blond and the virgin lives mostly also having sex brings to death as well. I love that Sergony is in this one and actually one of her terms was that she gets to meet the Werewolf lol she took pictures with the actor both in and out of the suit haha. Amy Acker the one that got pulled into the ceilling is the actress of Fred/Illaria in the Angel tv show though she was also in one episode of the show Grimm as well. I love her as an actress though the first time I saw her was in angel and then later in the tv show Alias as one of the main bad guys for a while. Grate reaction and glad you liked this one.

38:55 , something tells me that the suits labeling Marty "the fool" was their 1st mistake. I have a theory that not only is Marty the smartest, but he probably has also had a 4.0 gpa since Kindergarten, and even if he DID die, the ritual would have failed anyway because they just ASSUMED that the stoner is "the fool", which is the most foolish thing I've ever heard. Lol

The Ancient ones are a metaphor for us the audience. There is a theory that Dana isn’t really the virgin since she isn’t the virgin. Marty may actually be the virgin. That maybe another reason why things didn’t go the way they planned.

The Old Gods are, of course, US- the horror viewers that are so fickle that we want something new- but get upset when the movie doesn't follow the same tired tropes that everything before it used. It's also funny that the archetypes the kids are being forced into are very much the Scooby Doo characters.

Horror is generally not my thing. I respect why people enjoy it, it's just not my bag, baby. While I am fascinated by it, I just don't get anything out of actually watching the movies. I have read a lot of horror movie summaries on Wikipeida, mainly because I love mythology and continuity in stories, and because of how bonkers horror films can get when they have too many sequels. As a horror fan on a podcast I listen to puts it, once they've done 10 movies, there's a better than 50% chance of them going to space. However, this is a brilliant script and I movie I deeply enjoy, mainly because of the way it explains the tropes other slasher movies. Why do the victims make stupid decisions? Why do they leave weapons behind? Why do they split up? Why are they insatiably horny and punished for it? Why is there so often a lone girl/woman as either the survivor or the last one standing before the end? It's so damned clever and well executed, I just loved it. And yes, surprise Sigourney Weaver is never a bad thing.

A detail a lot of people miss, that I didn’t catch until my second time watching it, is right after Marty “dies” and they drop the blood and the entire place starts shaking, it’s because he didn’t really die. It was the foreshadowing of him coming back later in the movie. The reason is because since we are the elder gods, being the audience, a horror movie trope we’ve become infatuated with in the standard horror film this movie is making fun of, is that when a character dies off screen and we don’t visually see their death, a lot of times they come back later in the film to “save the day.” They set that up really well in this film.
