Well, congrats but the company needs to do better. CPTM still have a lot to improve, specially when it rains. It's total chaos with power going down and most of the time AC not working on proper hot days. But other than that it works perfectly, Sao Paulo is basically a swiss cheese when it comes to the subway stations, you cross from one side to another using public transportation easily instead of facing hours on a huge traffic on the roads.

Things I like about Sao Paulo Metro system: 1- Cleanliness. 2- 5min. wait time between trains. 3- single fare price no matter how far you travel. 4- improving service availability by extending the lines farther. Things it needs to improve: 1- Fix the IC card recharge machines which are broken in many stations. 2- Integrate with private companies to build more shops and recreational facilities on its stations like in Japan. 3- A true "ring" rail line running the downtown perimeter connecting many lines, just like the Moscow metro. 4- Desperate need to improve / overhaul the CPTM over the ground lines. Many trains have wrong destination signs! Not to mention wrong radio announcement! 5- Make decent integration of Metro with airports. Carrying your luggage 100 meters to 300 meters from the station to the terminal shows lack of urban planners and mayor competence.

Fun fact: in São Paulo, the subway lines are named after colors like Red, Blue, and Lilac, while the suburban rail lines are named after precious stones like Emerald, Ruby, and Diamond. Interestingly, the monorail system was originally planned to have lines named after medal's minerals, Gold, Silver and Bronze. However, the Gold line, slated for completion in 2013, is still under construction due to delays and contract disputes. Additionally, the Bronze line was transformed into an Autonomous Rapid Transit system, known as "BRT" in Brazil.

Latin American public transit is so underrated, you can really feel the European influence over there with things like system layout, automated trains, PSDs, modern European tramways, sometimes rubber-tyred trains etc. Actually, they were initially planned alongside Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian agencies. The main problem with HSR in this region is terrain, there's about 800 meters of elevation between Rio and São Paulo, any project like this would require an immense amount of tunnels and viaducts. i think people dont usually realize what a monster this city and its transit systems are, normally people focus on north america, europe and asia, and if latin america is ever mentioned in transit discussions its cdmx and bogota i think the bus network in São Paulo is also really impressive and criminally underrated, even by its residents. it doesnt have extensive brt systems like bogota or mexico city, but i really like how it is organized in several lower capacity corridors instead of a few full-brt lines, compensating the lower capacity by redundancy and capilarity, which also makes sense if you think about how polycentric the city is (something LA could perhaps take some notes on). and the ridiculous amount of people the busses move everyday in this city put to shame many metro systems around the world... its currently slow to electrify though, but the city has already approved a law prohibiting buying any new diesel busses, and with its fleet being obligated to be newer than 15 years, soon it will be fully electrified - and we're talking thousands of busses here

Essa trem vermelho aí da CPTM que não chamam de metrô aqui já vi o modelo dele idêntico no metrô da Polônia ou foi da Alemanha, é exatamente o mesmo veículo que aqui não é considerado metrô e lá é. I'm from São Paulo and i use the metro system everyday. Awesome video, and thanks for showing a good underrated metro system. There some things that i think its cool to point out: 710 service will be finished because privatization of line 7, that includes the Intercity Train project that is an express trem from Barra Funda to Campinas City. Its trains will use line 7 tracks to Jundiaí and go to Campinas, 100 km train track including line 7 and the remaining distance to Campinas, one of the biggest city in State of São Paulo. Second thing is the circular line isnt in the project of the Rail System and it is pretty rare that kind of line in Brazil, since Brazilian cities has the center that majority is comercial and residential areas barely far to center. Thats the main reason line 3 is the most busiest in the system. Also Sé station is also in the center, located under Cathedral of Sé, where marco zero (point 0 km, center of center) is located. On paper there are projects of some lines: Line 14 - Onix (CPTM) North-South line in the east zone connecting lines 13, 12, 11, 3, 16, 15, 10; Line 16 - Bronze was a monorail in Sao Bernardo changed to BRT system; Line 17 to jabaquara; Line 2 to Dutra along the new Line 19 - Celeste, that will go to Guarulhos, Line 13 to Mooca on south and to Bonsucesso on North, Line 16 - Violeta, from Line 4 yellow to Line 15 on the east going along side to line 3 in a region that has only buses, Line 22- Marrom, from Line 2 to west to Cotia, Line 20 - Rosa from Line 7 going south than east connecting Lines 7, 8, 2, 4, 22, 5, 17, 1, 10. I like this kind of content so I follow a lot about São Paulo changes on the metro system

The proposed Intercity Train is a joke and will cause plenty of headaches for current CPTM users. It's not a good idea. The government should build a competitive intercity service using high-speed rail, leaving the old tracks to metropolitan heavy rail (should be possible to offer an in-between service with a few changes to the current CPTM paradigm).

All CPTM lines are colored based on precious stones ( Line 7 - Ruby, Line 8 - Diamond, Line 9 - Emerald, etc) All the METRO lines are colored based on colors (Line 1 - Blue, Line 2 - Green, Line 3 - Red) All the Monorail are colored based on precious metals (Line 15 - Silver, Line 17 - Gold) The private companies here in São Paulo don't have the interest in building new lines, so ALL public transport here is created and build by the government and later the government gives it to some private company take our money, that's why there are private lines within the logic of colors (and we can actually know if the line was built by the CPTM or the METRO)

I just LOVE the SP transit system! Been lucky enough to be able to travel to and live in SP several month a year over the past few years. Practically using the metro lines on a daily basis to and from work. I mostly use line 1 (azul), line 3 (vermelho), and line 5 (lilas). My favorite being the stations on line 5 with their gorgeous glass canopies. Many of the main stations have snack and fast food shops both on the inside and outside. Sometimes on the way home from work, I would buy a cachorro quente and a milkshake at the Santa Cruz station.

São Paulo has an interesting and unique traffic system called Rodízio, which means "Rotation" in Portuguese. Thus, depending on the weekday riding a car is prohibited and really radar enforced. For example, on Mondays car plates ending in 0-1 cannot ride, on Tuesdays plates ending in 2-3 are prohibited, on Wednesdays 4-5... There are exceptions for drivers with disabilities, electric vehicles and other cases. If you rent a car at GRU or CGH airport, the agent will calculate the weekdays of your reservation to provide you a car with a plate that will make optimal for your stay avoiding the Rodízio. There are also the blue lanes exclusively for motorcycles, very interesting.

Finally my home city was covered! Having lived in NYC, Brussels, and São Paulo, I find it very interesting how varied the different cities are in their urban form and transportation options. SP is incomprehensibly massive, so much so that when you’re landing from a plane you literally can’t see the end of the city. It’s also really slow to get from one side of the city to the other, by car or by public transit because there’s always so much traffic everywhere and transit is very limited in reach and always packed. The metro is amazing in its cleanliness, service and stations but it’s always overcrowded and doesn’t go to nearly as many places. Contrasting this with New York where there’s a quad track trunk line every block it’s astounding how a city so massive like São Paulo can survive with such a relatively tiny metro system. What surprises me the most about the city is how dense it is everywhere, while still being extremely car dependent. You have massive apartment buildings throughout the entire massive city mixed in with houses and slums that are mostly entirely neglected by any rail transit, leading to way too many urban highways and urban stroads that make it hard to walk around as a pedestrian. There’s little surface parking lots compared to America but massive parking structures in almost every major destination. Traffic around the city is constant, and in every direction during rush hour. SP needs way more trains, and fast. There’s also no intercity rail at all in Brazil, which is another issue (SP-Rio HSR, anyone?)

Once that comes online, expanding to Ribeirão Preto is easy as the mainline allows for 160km/h+ velocities with minimal corrections.

Thank you very much for this video, Reece. Just some trivia: 1. Lines 8 and 9 after their takeover by Via Mobilidade have consistently suffered delays, derailments and maintenance problems, hence their recent unpopularity. The main reason why privatization of other lines is still seen as a positive for some people is the relative lack of worker strikes and high quality of services in line 4. However, that line was state-built, and the operator receives substantial subsidies per rider. That is not to say CPTM was perfect, but it provided very impressive improvements to the network after decades of mismanagement which left them in a state close to Mumbai’s local trains. Then why privatize? Money, pretty much. Both for the initial auction and future election grants. Lines 4, 5, 8 and 9’s operators are all part of CCR, which might as well own half the roads in the state of São Paulo. 2. The system is very crowded, as it has consistently not expanded quickly enough to meet the needs of the city. Hence all the measures taken to expand capacity and frequency, giving most lines a frequency of 90 seconds in peak periods. Definitely not something to scoff at. 3. The system was initially planned for 4 lines in the late 60s, with Line 1 having a branch to Moema (where Line 5 currently has a station), Line 2 being just a branch through Avenida Paulista, Line 3 was the same, and Line 4 was a Southwest-Southeast line that would arc south after Luz, stopping at where today is Line 2 in Sacomã. 3. Line 4’s importance comes from the fact that it is the only line that goes through Avenida Faria Lima, São Paulo’s financial center and where our stock exchange resides, as well as the only route for Line 9 passengers to go straight to the city center. Nowadays, Line 5 also handles that demand. As such, some stations were built for immense crowds, such as Pinheiros. This interchange at Pinheiros between Lines 4 and 9 is longer than planned, as during construction subsidence led to the worst accident in the Metro’s history, with over 7 deaths. This line also took an insultingly long time for it to be complete, and its extension projects further out to outlying districts and Taboão da Serra are still in the planning stages similar to Line 5, despite numerous promises. 4. Your plans for the end of the video do exist, in the form of Line 20 of the Metro, Line 14 of CPTM (most likely the next operator), Line 2 as it will be further extended north, and the Southern Arc of CPTM. The two closest to fruition are Line 2 extending north, and Line 20. In addition, there is a plan for a city center tunnel between Lapa and Brás to both free up space in the surface, as well as segregating freight traffic from the suburban lines. Given the country’s finances and the city’s desperate need for more rail lines, this project has very little priority. 5. Line 17’s construction firm was first implicated in a massive corruption scheme, and the next firm has gone bankrupt. The state is still negotiating who will finish construction. 6. Line 15 was supposed to be cheaper and quicker to build. None of these promises have materialized. The main reason it’s a monorail is because of the terrain, which is quite hilly and with many subterranean rivers. It will be extended to Ipiranga at Line 10 to relieve Line 2, and it was supposed to extend to Cidade Tiradentes, a notoriously dense, distant, and transit poor district in the edge of the city. Those plans were put on hold due to fears of overcrowding. Line 16 is now supposed to take this responsibility as well as relieving Line 3, which pre-covid had a ridership of over a million per day. 7. Line 3 was supposed to go to Guaianazes, but this didn’t happen because of Metro’s indebtedness, as well as, once again, fears of overcrowding. So CPTM took over this section, rebuilt Line 11 as an express service for Line 3, and in return they gave the Metro Line 5. This is, believe it or not, just a fraction of all the silliness and complexity of this system, which in many ways, is a reflection of the city that it runs on. Despite all of that, it’s the best in Brazil, there’s no comparison. The difference is night and day to the other systems, and the only one that comes somewhat close is Salvador’s metro, but that one is also run by CCR. Without the Metro and CPTM, São Paulo would collapse, and it leaves people like me, who live in Rio, very sad that we have to subject ourselves to rail services which are both more expensive and much worse than these. Good luck São Paulo, don’t let them drag you down.

There are some projects of intercity trains, but almost all in São Paulo state. There have been TGV projects, but the cost is prohibitive and Brazilian geography doesn’t help at all. So we’re really dependent on air travel, that is very expensive here. The train interval in peak hours are less then one minute, you often can see both trains from the platform. The stations normally have a bus terminal with at least 10 bus lines in each station, so the station itself are overused. The line 15 and the line 4 reaching Penha Station will release a lot of the tention, because a very common destiny are the stations on line 4, around av. Paulista.

I live in the northwest region of São Paulo and I'm looking forward for the construction of line 6 of subway. The city is densely populated and the currently lines are not enough. Even with buses, trains and subway, there's places we take up to 2 hours a day to get to work, going from suburbs to the center of the city. And no, we're not commuting, that's still inside São Paulo.

The line 13 does not end at Guarulhos because the airport operator (after privatization) made every effort to stop the line from getting there. They even claim that it was going to be a shopping center where CPTM wanted to build the original station (at the airport terminal). Lines 8 and 9 were recently privatized, and boy, let me tell you, it was the WORST decision ever made. The service is now HORRIBLE! Last year, they had an incredible 157 severe failures that disrupted the train service, plus SEVEN derailments. This year, they already have 50 falis and 3 derailments. We did not have derailments with CPTM, and the failures were less severe. With their last operating year seeing 30 of them. Plus, with CPTM, we had more trains, we had to wait less, they were much cleaner, and CPTM's AC did work. The service was much better with the state-owned CPTM! Now the current government wants to privatize even more lines, including Line 7, ending the 710 service! absolutely unbolieveble.

It wasn't like that when I lived in SP up until 2018. At least for us Brazilians, they accepting Pix as a payment methode made things a lot easier. Back then, you actualy needed to have cash to charge their metro pass. In 2020, the Brazilians created Pix, which is a free money transfer between any two banks at any time of the day or night using the bank smartphone app.

This is a problem that foreigners have in here, althoug they can have a temporary cpf now not everybody know this.. And remember that to operate pix you need internet, so you need a Cellphone with a brazilian sim-card and to activate it you need your cpf number also.. It's the same problem for foreigners about the food delivery apps because they also require the cpf number, and in some cases actually in a lot of cases, the international credit cards can have a problem with Brazilian machines, they need to operate only on credit.. Great video! I really liked how you considered CPTM as an almost metro, which really it is. Even Brazillian newspapers and some urbanists tend to ignore the importance of CPTM, which work both as a metro near dense neighbourhoods and as a regional and frequent railway connecting other cities to the system. I'd just point that the expasions you pointed out are on hold right now. The miniloop would be comprised of different expasions and new lines which have been altered in the last few years and may not create the same design some people expected in the past. However, juxtaposition of several new lines and expasions may create the same effect in the future. And there are two much bigger loops still in the planning board, connecting suburbs (remember that suburbs in Sao Paulo are very dense): 1) one connecting the south of the city to cities in the west (Line 24); and 2) the other connecting the south of the city to cities in the east (line 23). Both are on a very early stage of planning and we don't even now if they will be heavy rail or light rail. In regards of the tunnels, we haven't heard of them for a long time, even though the guy from Commu still talks about it. It probably is too expensive and not worth it now, since freight rail has been or will be diverged from these lines. In the near future I think most of the lines will connect both in Barra Funda and Brás, while RER type of services may be possible with some simple solutions, like the 710 service. I think that the most important expasion right now is line 20, which will finally connect the last of the major CBDs and the most important one nowadays, Faria Lima Avenue. The avenue is pretty carcentric, specially the newest parts, with abysmal transit, having only a bus lane in the left side (where cars turn to enter in the office buildings) used by something like 400 thousand people (yes, it is right). The sorrounding neighbourhoods have also a lots of jobs, density and even worse transit. Besides the people that already use transit, I think it is important to bring the metro to the region to put more affluent people in it and out of the cars - as a city in a very unequal country, transit and walking are very common ways of transporation for people who cannot afford a car, which is in itself a sort of status symbol for the middle and upper midle classes, making it very dificult to convince them on less carcentric policies, to be in public spaces and know people of different classes and consider them.

The new lines made it even better and all that made even using cars as buses better also (except in West zone that has little options and narrow ways for cars). It shrunk the city.
