James O'Donnell was a soldier with the US Signal Corps but at the end of WW2 he took up a position with Newsweek Magazine. His assignment was to go to Berlin and find out as much as he could about Adolf Hitler's and Eva Braun's last days. It become a lifetime obsession which culminated in the writing of a book which this historical portrayal is based. Anthony Hopkins was awarded an Emmy for his portrayal of Adolf Hitler.

Sir Antony did a very good job portraying Hitler in the English spoken language version but naturally Bruno Ganz (rest in peace) was more authentic because he spoke in German and he came the absolute closest to nailing Hitlers character and mannerisms. I have always had high regard for the late Richard Jordan and he not only looked like Speer, i think he was the best Speer.

Ganz had a great advantage over the competition, and that was that most of the world had never seen him before. His Hitler was even more histrionic than his predecessors. For my money, Hopkins gave the greatest performance. Those dead eyes, the awkward gestures, the ferocity of his rages, his semi autistic mannerisms in repose: it is as penetrating and authentic a portrayal as we will ever see.

The book by James O'Donnell (on which the movie is based) is a good read. The movie ends with Hitler's suicide. But the entire last half of the book tells the fascinating story about what happened after. The stories of the people who tried to escape. Especially interesting was that of Rochus Misch, who was interviewed by O'Donnell. Misch was the engineer in the bunker. The last person left. And was there when the Russians arrived.

@@shauntaylor6040 You are right. It was Johannes Hentschel. It's been a few years since I read O'Donnell's book. Hentschel relates that the first Russians to enter the bunker was a group of Red Army women. One of them asked him (in German) "Wo sind die Klamotten?" They were interested in Eva Brown's wardrobe. The first scene of the movie is taken directly from the beginning of the book. O'Donnell was one of the first Americans to tour the bunker. And he describes how it was half flooded.

Large parts of Speer's 'testimony' as provided immediately after the war and prior to his trial as is conveyed by O'Donnell's book upon which this film is based have been shown to be dubious at best and at times complete fabrication predicated upon self-preservation. After Speer's release, Gitta Sereny engaged in a personal relationship and correspondence with him and to a lesser degree his wife over a number of years to complete her magnificent book 'Albert Speer: His Battle With Truth'. She managed to really get inside his mind to interrogate him using the principles of psychiatry and ultimately challenge him about a number of the contradictions of his account. Throughout this time, as he became more comfortable and indeed increasingly aware of his own approaching death, he made some effort to reconcile himself with the truth, his part in it and his guilt. It really is a fascinating read, a real mental joust which pivots upon morality, guilt and true historical custodianship for the greater good of humanity. He was a deeply flawed man who came to understand how he had indeed knowingly allowed himself to be seduced for his own personal benefit in a deal with the devil in which he traded his undeniably great intelligence for personal and professional advantage only realising too late that he has entered into a contract from which he would never be able to extricate himself.

The movie looks more like a parody. That being said, when i first saw hopkin’s portrayal i thought it to be over the top. But it grew on me as at this period hitler was frequently taking bizarre drugs from his doctor theodore morel and this over the top behaviour was probably a by product of that. So hopkins went for an approach as close to hitler’s mental and physical state as possible. Bruno Ganz’s portrayal went for another approach but i think it is interesting to compare both performances.

When he was in his great angriness, the great Antony Hopkins was very close to Bruno Ganz, his grimaces and movements of arms above all. But finally too fair for me, during the rest of time, despite the serious aid of Albert Speer and important documentation he had. Bruno Ganz was perfect for playing the desperate Hitler, terrific in this final part of reign, in his attitude of rage and denial. His "bunker delirium."

In reality, this version of Hitler, was probably the closest to the real thing. Hitler, did go through ranting rages at the end. Did almost foam at the mouth and started not keeping himself together personally,as Eva told Hitler directly. He was also on heavy drugs, and as a true believer, thought his whole life had been planned by divine providence, was convinced to the very end, that victory could still be won. Just at the very end,did that change. Knowing it was over,he sent his drug doctor away. And gave up,with killing himself as his last defiant act and cheating of his enemies. The only thing he could do now, have a last laugh on them, and escape their just punishment. He married Eva,was quite jovial and peaceful to most at the very end. But to the very, very end, anyone who in any way went against him, that he found out about,no matter how high up,as Goering and Himmler found out, lost everything, and if still able to get his hands on them,at that late moment, even their lives. The other Hitler, showed the side of Hitler when he wasn't the dictator, like at recreation at his private home,or in the last 48 hours of the Bunker, before his death. It was a sympathetic portrayal. The side of Hitler, that those closest to him saw in his private moments, and the general public, who saw just his public face, that was a facade,in so many ways. But for most of those last desperate days in the bunker, this Hitler, one moment ecstatic even then in victory commi g to a raving lunatic to his generals, was very close,to the real Hitler.

True; many people have only seen a few ranting images on discovery channel and such. Hitler using his calm natural voice has only been recorded a few times; his relaxed and friendly presence can be seen in berghof footage; there is also Speer’s testimony, and even though he talked himself out of the trial; the comments later on in his book feel very truthful. Combine all that and Hopkins does a very good performance; Hitler had a deeper voice though, bit more charisma and change it to German and there you go.

Worth watching for the sets and the recreation of the Chancellery, but Hopkins portrayal was odd and didn’t come across as authentic. Probably perfectly acceptable for its era but now it’s not particularly grand.

Anthony Hopkins did a excellent sick and broken down Hitler, a fine performance and I remember this TV movie when it was first shown. The problem is Hopkins is too young for the role, he just doesn't LOOK the part as Bruno Ganz did. Ganz was the right combination of looks and acting ability. Bruno's the best Hitler.

but Hopkins is the better actor, I actually felt some weird, warped sympathy for his Hitler which I never got with Ganz's Hitler, mainly when he talked about his love for Germany (which Hitler did)
