this was the first music video played on MTV, I remember how choked up I felt with the feeling that Pandora's box has just been opened
I saw this video when it launched MTV in 1981. Damn I'm old.

Except blockbuster getting killed didn't kill off CDs. CDs are... Everywhere! And digital video! And well.. Radio stars, too! So no one is dead- not yet, at least. Though VTR and VCR are pretty much gone except for collector items... so I guess it's just a technology change.

MTV is pure nostalgia! I remember the first time this came out. MTV is not the same anymore. It's no longer fun to watch.
probably one of the greatest music videos ever, the science fiction imagery, the winged girl in the tube, the radios exploding, I love it all, and trevor's glasses rule too.
2:56 love that bass hit and then you see them as they jam an outro. Memories!

Jeffrey Lyons it was 1979 and btw their popularity plummeted in the early 80s due to lack of good hits. only made two good hits which reached the charts. The second was living in the plastic age.
Back then I didn't really understand 'Video killed the Radio Star', but the reality hit me for quite a while now.

Si..greeting's from Alabama. (U.S.A.).
6 жыл бұрын
Eso es verdad. Pero la canción acierta desde su título. Las estrellas que nacían en la radio ya no existen, ahora son prefabricadas y cuando suenan en las emisoras es porque ya han sido moldeadas en vídeo.
im 13 probably heard this when i was 3-4 insane how I remember it and still love it will always be one of my favorites

So true but 1952 really was a very different world. Not that I was alive, I was born in 1970 but I remember 1979 seemed very different from 1975. 1979 had popular techno music, sleek styles, very "modern", 1975 was still hippyish and earthy tones. As far as I'm concerned, it's the same era as we are now, we just have more and better stuff but the vibe is the same-ish. Postmodernism I guess you'd call it.

It's funny how social perspective can shift. My mother used to turn her nose up at really old movies from the 1930's when they were on tv back in the 1960's. Now the same movies are, like, beloved classics. Oldies used to be moldy, but now they're often as precious as the Dead Sea Scrolls.

I'm always amazed at how much of what we consider to be part of the 1980s came into being in the late 1970s. Digital sound came into being with DASH (the first digital audio format) in 1976 (and was first used for Star Wars). The first walk-man was introduced in 1979. Cable television started with HBO. The first home video recorders came out in 1978. The first test flights of the space shuttle took place in 1976. Also, Pong was the first video game in 1976. Our modern world came into being.

Douglas Hall Actually, the first Betamax machines were released in 1975. There's a KZreadr named Ray Glasser who was a big Betamax enthusiast and has uploaded a large number of home videos filmed on videotape from 1976 onwards. Pong came out in 1972 and the home system was released by Atari in 1975.

Honestly, one of the greatest songs ever. Not only was it a prediction but it was historic as the first video played on MTV. I watched the launch of MTV and even then I knew it would be a game changer! I really wish MTV was still MTV. Hey MTV, I want my MTV!!!!!!! NOt that game show, reality crap...MUSIC TELEVISION. Or as one of the ads said, "MTv, Blah, Blah, Teleblah"
Today, Aug. 1st 2015. MTV 34 years old. Aug. 1st 1981, this was the first video played.
I remember August 1, 1981 midnight MTV was born Mark Goodman , said ladies and gentlemen welcome to a whole new era in music boy was he right I had a VCR at the time and taped MTV all day while I was at school starting in eighth grade cannot get enough of it the 80s those lazy crazy Dazzling days and nights how wonderful they were !!!
It's weird because at the time they thought this was revolutionary so do we now it's sad cuz it's a time that was and never will be again
Happy birthday MTV
This old era... Being born in the nineties, I missed so much change, but was able to see the last vestiges before the new world began. I wonder just how much the newer generations have missed being able to reflect upon and grow from. The more I learn about the recent past, the more I understand culture- and find myself so influenced, too. I imagine many who existed in those times have experienced numerous thoughts that people like myself rarely touch upon.

That was a really common thing pre-MTV. A lot of times they'd hire a local DJ to host, and it was really radio with pictures. SCTV did a great send-up of the phenomenon with "The Gerry Todd Show", where he inevitably played videos from a guy named Tom Monroe, who did easy listening covers of popular songs (think Richard Cheese, but in 1980). kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z4mH07GIlpm4hbA.html is one, which is even funnier if you remember the original done by the Vapors.
Siempre quise saber de esa música el nombre, la letra y hoy la encontré, recuerdo de niño cuando sonaba en la radio... Excelente.
Retro and Futuristic and kind of Alternate Universe ish , this is still great ! It is also a masterclass in how to play a bass. !
