Fun Fact: This was the very first song to air on Music Television (or MTV for short)!

    Oh WHAT irony!

  • @cunning-stunt

Ironic really, the song is about how real musical and vocal talent would be diluted and killed off by TV and video. Stars whose voices and talent were amazing , but the rise of television (and, by extension, music videos) would hurt the careers of those performers whose looks would not translate well to the new medium.. How right they were!

You are right. I noticed that the vocalists of the pre-MTV era (let's say, MTV for the sake of discussion, to summarize the era of music on videoclips), especially the female ones, cared relatively little for their look or dress code even when they were singing on tv. And audience seemed to care more for the voice and skill of the vocalist rather than her look.

If I may, I believe the last verse's last line is "Put the blame on V*T*R." When this song was written, VCRs hadn't quite hit yet and the abbreviation "VCR" wasn't in use (if anything, the term "Betamax" came first and persisted until VHS decks appeared and we needed a more generic appellation). But "VTR" had been a term of art in the television industry for years in the US and in the UK and it's pretty clear that the song is about video technology. I don't know for sure but I don't think even the advent of Sony U-Matic in the '70s had anyone in the biz ever calling them "VCRs."

"The Age of Plastic" was the first ever vynyl record I bought aged 14. I heard it as test record for a turntable in an Hi-Fi store and I liked it soon, so I decided to purchase it. In hindsight was a prophetic album. I can't listen to it without a bit of nostalgia though, because especially "Video Killed the Radio Star" told the tale of a forever disappeared era.

If you take any good song, find out how many seconds it is, then divide the total seconds by 1.618 (Golden Ratio) you tend to find the Golden Moment in the song. Go to approximately the 2:59 minute mark. The Golden Ratio of the song is approximately 155.74 seconds in. Lackluster songs tend to not follow Fibonacci...

@@sayori-the-thing This song was released as a single in late 1979, and it's from the album, The Age Of Plastic. But The Age Of Plastic album wasn't released until early 1980. That's the only reason why I put 1980 Classic on there. I also have the album on CD and on vinyl. In fact, this song was the very first music video that was ever played on MTV. It happened on August 1, 1981. But when I saw this video on VH1's The Big 80's, it did show 1979. But I put 1980 Classic instead of 1979 Classic only because the album was released in early 1980 in which I believe this song became a big hit after it first entered into the Cash Box Charts. But I did put 1979 on the music video of this song on you tube only because it showed 1979 on VH1's The Big 80's in which The Big 80's have been off the air for over 20 years. And for the most part, I'm putting the years that I remember seeing on the VH1 music videos. Perhaps, you might be able to find the music video of this song on You Tube, and if you scroll down in the comments section, you might find my comment. The Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star" The Age Of Plastic Island Records, 1979 I got this caption from VH1.

It’s crazy to think how a song from the 80’s is even more relevant in the modern era as video continues to kill the radio star, especially now we’ve got KZread and TikTok.

As it seems some people (Americans) were a little slow to catch on to this one and list it as 1980 it was in fact born to the world in the UK on 4th September 1979.Being a British song by a British group i think that's the date to base this song on and, in fact, The American arm of Island Records put it out in USA in October that same year.

The song made UK no.1 in October 1979 so its not 80's, its quite clearly the 70s
