The Brute Force: How I overcame stammering | Abhi K Ruparelia | TEDxYouth@DPSRKPuram

The Brute Force is probably one of the most effective techniques out there that helps you fight your stammer and other hurdles. However it also shatters probably some of the biggest beliefs most people have about stammering. And the best part - You don't need any speech therapy for this approach to work! Abhi has been working on this approach since the past 8 years and he claims it has changed his life.
Abhi is an international public speaking champion. But wait! There's a catch! - he stammers! He considers himself an oxymoron, a contradiction of my own self. One moment, he is a super shy guy who sits in the farthest corner of the room but the other moment, he is a person who gives a speech in front of a thousand people!
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

it isn't just a stammer though, it affects lot more than just your speech, it affects your mental health, lots of people who stammer suffer from high levels of aniexty and social aniexty. also depression is also common in people who stammer. shame is another feeling that stammerers have to go through. also the fear is one of the worst parts about the disorder. it wouldn't be classed as a disability if it was just a stammer. it affects alot of people's daily lives.

thats completely true. stammering in my case has made me a very socially awkward person as i am afraid i will embarrass myself with the stutter. i has closed so many opportunities down for me and has had many more negative side-effects than just not being able to speak properly. the depression is the worst.

What I have is more of a speech block. I don't stutter. It's worse when someone asks me a question. When I was a kid, if someone asked me my dad's name or where I live, I couldn't get it out. Speech therapy in school didn't help. When someone asks me the name of a person or place, my mind is running overtime about the person or place. It's like I'm seeing a description of them in my mind. It's like an over load, and I can't get the words out. I believe it comes from low self esteem. When I was in my 20-30s, I had a lot of confidence and it went away. Now, it came back in my 50s and I can't control it. I'm 63 now, and I avoid a lot of conversations. I dread people asking me questions. When I was a kid, is there a medication, like an anti depressant that can help? It's not a habit. And it's not something I can cure wth tongue exercises, etc. I wasted a lot of time on that growing up. Maybe hypnosis would help. With most stammerers / stutterers, there was some traumatic event that happened to the patient in their childhood. Some may have lost a parent or loved one in their early childhood, and this memory causes them anxiety or something subconscious. Has anyone tried hypnosis as a treatment? I hope someone can help me with this. Thank you.

I was a stammerer however overcame it by facing my fears. When people said try talking slow I spoke fast. When people said don't talk much, I talked a lot even if I was just blabbering most of the time. Now I earn my living by talking.😎

I used to stutter to the point of not being able to speak at all. I overcame stuttering and I thank God for the experience and lesson and the cure. This is How I stopped stuttering: I was at work and I couldn't speak and I knew it. In that moment I became so upset and then I decided that I don't care how bad I stutter and how embarrassed that it may feel or how horrible my speech may be, that I was going to speak anyways. When I made that decision within myself, the fear and anxiety and paralysis went away and from that point on I could speak fine. For me stuttering was fear of not being able to speak or fear of speaking that was a self-fulfilling event. I had to confront the fear. Once I decided to speak in spite of the fear, the fear went away.

@@umarusman857 The anxiety is a big part of stuttering. The anxiety must be confronted directly. The anxiety is basically telling you that you can't speak and then you wonder if maybe you shouldn't speak. It is a spirit of fear and is only there to cause turmoil and turbulence. The only way to be free is by courage and faith and daring. Often times it is indignation that has to give rise to determination...perfect love casts out fear. The eternal hope of Jesus Christ gives me courage and inspiration to face my fears.

Great speech Abhi. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I have been stuttering for the past 18 years or so and I'm really fed up of it now. It has become a hurdle for me while going for an interview or initiating a conversation with a stranger and especially telephonic conversations. I've been frustrated numerous times due to this speech impediment. However your speech has infused courage in me to accept my stuttering first (while controlling my frustration and ignoring all fools) and then use the brute force to fight it back. Looking forward for brighter days. Thanks and good day pal

Identify your fear and run straight into it . My fear was always public speaking and now, I still have that anxiety, but it's normal and not as intense because I have understood and faced that fear that once disabled me . Fear is a death of living fully . It stops you. Fight it and shine . And most importantly, enjoy the fight and love yourself in the process. You are unique and special . The world in in your hands . God bless

Been frequently stuttering for 25 years now. It kills me so much. It makes me afraid to talk and I never opened my mouth unless it is a necessity. It makes me feel less. It makes me feel I'm not normal. It makes me feel different from normal people to the point that I don't even understand myself. The thought is clear in my mind but I'm struggling to express it verbally. I hate being laughed at when stuttering tries to interrupt me from expressing myself. I feel helpless. I feel hopeless. Sometimes, I question myself why am I like this. I have never opened this to anyone (I know that they know that I stutter) and I've been thinking for therapy but it never came to realization. But in all of this, Lord I will praise you and worship you for everything. No disorder nor impairment can refrain me not to be grateful everyday of my life. To those who stutter out there, change the way you see yourself. You're God's masterpiece.

This is coming from a stammer, I can totally understand brother what you go through. I used to feel the same but SELF PITY HAS NEVER DID ANY GOOD. DON'T BLAME GOD MAN. DON'T USE HIM AS A SCAPEGOAT. I JUST SAY ONE THING EXPOSE YOURSELF TO SPEAKING, DOESN'T MATTER HOW YOU SPEAK JUST INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TIMES YOU FACE YOUR FEARS AND INSECURITIES. DO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN SPEAK SLOWLY BUT SPEAK. DON'T BACK DOWN, LET PEOPLE LAUGH LET THEM HOW LONG THEY CAN LAUGH, REMEMBER ONE THING AFTER SOME YEARS YOU'LL ALSO DIE THE PEOPLE WHO LAUGHED AT YOU WILL ALSO DIE, NOTHING IS PERMANENT. PLUS WHEN YOU'LL DIE AT LEAST YOU'LL BE PROUD OF YOURSELF THAT YOU DIDN'T QUIT BUT THAT AIN'T HAPPENING COZ IF YOU WILL EXPOSE YOURSELF CONSTANTLY TO SPEAKING ENVIRONMENT, AFTER SOME ATTEMPTS YOULL SHOW ALOT OF IMPROVEMENT SUDDENLY AND THIS IS NOT THEORY THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH ME IVE IMPROVED ALOT THOUGH I STILL STUTTER BUT ITS MINOR STUTTERS. AND WHAT I THINK MAJOR PART OF IT HAPPENS BECAUSE WERE UNDER CONFIDENT YEAH YOU HEARD IT RIGHT, INVEST IN YOURSELF. I HOPE YOU'LL SEE THIS MESSAGE.

Well done Abhi. It was great to hear your story and wish you all the best. I wish I had made a speech when I was 11. I still think about it today. That may have meant I stopped stuttering at a much earlier age. It took me over 30 years to break free and now I am on KZread :) The stutter made me depressed and was lonely. The more people that do videos the more likely people who stutter can see that its really possible to break free.

You are absolutely right about not caring if people like you. There is a saying: You walk into a meeting with 10 people you don't know. As soon as you start speaking 4 of them don't like you. By the end of the speech another 4 don't like you. Only 2 like you at the end. If you are OK with that, then that's the answer. The point is you can't please other people all the time. You just have to be yourself and not be dependent on other people's opinions.

Life is not easy for everyone but I feel somewhat, money makes life easier irrespective of your issue. Poor people can't get the equal opportunity and working hard, bringing confidence where there is no opportunity is all waste, they need to drag themselves till their luck comes and bring them up but still not everyone is lucky.

Please explain what you believe to be the difference between stammering and stuttering...I'm quite certain they are in fact the same thing. North Americans use the term stammer and the rest of the world (Europe at least) use the term stutter to describe the condition.

As a 63 year old stammer, I have been fortunate to have my mum who pushed me to be to outgoing saying its other peoples problem not yours. I still have a number of challenges though. Saying my name in a business meeting (I cant use an alternative which is one of my workarounds when I stammer). On a similar theme, I wont read out stuff, I struggle with that. When I do business presentations I rarely read from the slides but use my own words. I am confident speaking in public but that confidence goes very quickly and turns to fear if I stammer alot and feel that others are embarrassed or frustrated by my stammer.
