The Broken: ‘Dalit’ Sikhs Fight Back in Punjab | Caste Discrimination | India
Gurwinder's family has a history of working as bonded labourers, known as "Seeris,” for landowning farmers in Bauran Kala village in the Sikh-majority Punjab state of India. His father, now 65 years old, is still working as a "dung-rubbish picker," a job predominantly done by Dalit Sikhs, who are not only treated as “outcasts” but are also landless and impoverished. Despite a law passed by the Punjab legislative assembly in 1961, which reserves one-third of the government-owned agricultural land for Dalits, access to even this meager land has come at a cost for these marginalised individuals. Although Sikh teachings promote helping those in need, Gurwinder believes that these values are not genuinely reflected in society.
The caste system's historical legacy has prohibited Sikh Dalits from owning land nationwide, and this pattern remains prominent in India's Sikh-majority state of Punjab, which has a population of about 30 miilion. Despite accounting for nearly one-third (32%) of Punjab’s population, Dalits own a mere 3.5% of private land. Meanwhile, the dominant agricultural Jat caste, which comprises 20% of the state's population, holds over 80% of the land.
Gurwinder sees the opposition they face as a reflection of societal inequality and injustice towards Dalit Sikhs, which contradicts Sikhism's principles of equality irrespective of race, gender, caste, or social status.

Bullshit no it isn't. Punjab has much less caste discrimination than most other states. It still has it, but much less.
This is easily one of the finest works I've seen so far, talking of Punjab's social discrimination issue. Poets like Sant Ram Udasi, Lal Singh Dil, Avtar Singh Pash and many more, passed away, while their works on the social inequality are still relevent today, which is a tragedy. Respect to the team. Such a first hand account was much needed.

Didn’t realise there was such a thing as Dalit Sikhs. I knew there were supposedly lower castes like Chammar and Chura which are referred to in derogatory terms. My own parents used to say it to me as a kid if I misbehaved.

Not all are bad . We give 15000 every month even if our profit is less . Or even whole crops are completely destroyed by rain or storm . 15000*12 - 180000 yearly + some people make more during harvesting season. I know Casteism is still not gone . But very less in new generation.

Very sad to see the state of Dalits. They blame Hindus for this but deny caste and caste based discrimination in their own faiths/religions. We all should treat one another with respect.

Amazing... I always thought that there is no caste in Sikhism but after watching this, I felt that I should work on these problems... This was one of the best short films/documentaries I have ever seen... I would love to work on these problems and I hope I will be able to convince the entire world.

i live in new york, where there are separate gurudwaras for jat sikhs, labana sikhs and dalit sikhs. and it is the same in pretty much all over north america, western europe and australia. the cancer of caste has been present in sikhism since the beginning of sikhism.

You can stop it by marrying yourself or your relatives into other castes. Create mixed caste families and this should stop discrimination

I, as a Jatt Sikh see no difference amongst my brothers from different castes. We all are sons of same Guru. Saadi jaat alag ho sakdi hai, but asi dharam wallo sab bhraa hee hege aa. Rabb sab nu tandrusti dawe, te pyaar banaai rakkhe 🙏🏻💙

Jat is not a tribe it's a CASTE. Tribes have own culture songs language dance etc There's no jat dance or food or language. Caste is a group united by same profession. Jats are united by same profession, hence a caste not a tribe.

@@AVaibhav31 Jatts of Punjab has distinct Punjabi dialect which is noticeably different from other Punjabi groups. Their culture is also quite distinct from other Punjabis, if looked from open eyes. Jat is a tribe.

@@NoName-sl6du offcourse instead jatts of Pakistan and haryana punjab and other areas share many cultural things so it's a race not even a tribe because it also have different genetic and physical characteristics , but offcourse as I m a Sikh I respect each and every human , and Dalits are also my brothers and jatts will always support them in their upliftment but on one condition they should not be influenced by Brahmins and fight within jatts and Dalits because Brahmin is very clever and he is ruling both Dalits and jatts
This is the reason why there is a lot of injustice in society although our gurus were against all this injust practice and against all cast system. Also this is the reason for our downfall of a golden state. Waheguru ji meher karo.

This needs to be shown as to the reality of the prevalent reality of the casteism in Sikhism. I was born in the UK and despite my parents not teaching me about caste it was hammered to me by my jatt Sikh school friend who kept badgering what caste I was and that she was from the highest caste and every other caste is ranked lower. We originally had one gurdwara in which all castes worshipped until politics took hold and jatts wanted a separate gurdwara, the ramghariyas also wanted a separate gurdwara until each caste had their own. When dating I was asked which caste I belonged to and in my experience the jatt men were more hesitant in marrying outside. To ignore this issue in our community isn’t doing sikhi any favours in that where you are told repeatedly where you stand in your own religion in terms of caste you then carry resentment towards those who feel they hold the power and supremacy over you. This is not new I’m in my 40s and most of my life I’ve seen the issue of caste causing division and hatred in our religion . If you want Sikhism to thrive those heads of the faith need to work harder in dealing and eradicating this issue so those who are made to feel inferior don’t reach out to other religions where they feel welcomed . I don’t blame our religion and teachings but I blame those thekedars who have poisoned our faith all for the ego and to retain dominance
Jattan nu thodi akal aaye..Maybe the next generation would be better to understand all this stupidity should go away and follow our principles that everyone is equal.

Caste system has spreaded in Sikhism utterly, and that's why people now leaving this Community .There us nothing wrong in Sikhism but that is the people who form society to live along. This message is going beyond the limits, everyone from U.P, Delhi, Rajasthan, Bihar, Maharastra getting to know the current reality in Punjab.

Most people leaving a religion in Panjab are Dalit Hindus to Christianity. Caste was codified by Indian Law through BC, OBC, General, etc. classifications rather then financial strength, is the main cause for caste to exist. Other reason is influx of Mahants in every village, they have shown up in every village in last 20 years, where did they come from? Who sent them? They start a dera to compete with Gurdwaras and push andh vishwas in villages and caste. Some of these Mahants run Panchayat land.

@orthodox_Christian601 what is a Bhappa? If you mean a Khatri, I would marry a Khatri in a second as all my Gurus were Khatri. In Sikhi, there is no caste and Sikhs love Jesus also. But most Christians have failed to realize what Jesus was talking about, same as what Sikhi says. Apna Mool paachaan, aka Christ, Satgur, Atma, etc.
