A trick I learned in the US Army is that if you wet the wool cover it keeps the water cold in hot weather.

The upward arrow is the British military mark, usually called the "broad arrow" When fighting in the desert during WW2 it was handy to carry as much water as possible!!

@@shanehanson7514 I believe ALL commonwealth armies used British equipment so they ALL had the Broad Arrow markings

The arrow is a broadhead, the symbol or mark of the British government. It's used as a "proof" mark or acceptance mark. In use since the middle ages.

I use one of those and it is my favorite canteen, one of the good features is that if the cork gets damaged you can replace it with a wine fork, great bottle, and a good review, all the best man.

I like using mine from time to time. I have so many canteen in my collection now that its sometimes hard to pick just one. My cork on the green enameled one is starting to get a little worn so I was planning on going to the hardware store and buying another one that looks as close to the original as I can. Thanks for watching and for your second comment!

I am suspecting Canadian. We had a number of these, largely unused at the military surplus shops here in BC in the past few years. I wish I'd picked one up. Canadian kit is virtually identical to British kit of that day after all we are British Commonwealth. Also inside your webbing I noticed it is stamped CN. The second one I would guess is Indian webbing from WWII for a few reasons. Firstly the copper ends and buckles are a bit rude and yet are functional. The second reason is the stitching as you pointed out and finally the webbing has lines stitched in running the length of the webbing. Anyway just a guess and like you I suspect the bottle to be Royal Navy or RAF or Royal Canadian Navy or RCAF or Royal Anzac Navy or AF. Just guessing because of the colour.

Great video, good information. I’ve got two of these canteens myself although one of mine has the envelope type carrier. I really need to get some of my British gear out and use it. Thanks for the video.

Judging by the condition of the attachments to the cork stopper that has been replaced or this bottle was never issued. There was a glut of them in 1945 as many front line troops were issued 1944 Pattern webbing with aluminium water bottles (hard to find in good condition) in post war conflicts. Up until the 90s I seem to remember British army water bottles capacity was 2 pints if you're looking for an exact measurement. 37 Pattern webbing used to be everywhere when I was a kid, dirt cheap, the packs were really popular but not so much the bottles, most people swapped them for ''44 or ''58 pattern bottles which are (lets face it) a bit more user friendly! Thanks for the vid!

if you soak the wool felt in water it cools your water inside the canteen as it evaporates, and the broad-arrow or crows foot is a war department stamp or as it's still on UK equipment now the ministry of defence.

Thanks for all the great vids john!,, if you ever see any of these in blue enamel coating, they were intended for the british air force, these are quite rare now, and hard to find in good condition even in britain,

Looks exactly like an 18th century canteen; except in the mid-to-late 1700's they were made of tinned copper. Thanks for sharing your collection.

Steve Sharp It does look like one of those period canteens. I used to do some Colonial time reenacting. It was a lot of fun. Thanks for watching. I hope my videos are a help to people out there.

Aww come on John, have a heart. PLEASE stop doing great reviews of gear. I've had this on a "maybe" list and now you've quite possibly tipped it over on to the "to get" list. Although my wife would like to thank you. She didn't know what to get me for Christmas and looked at my YT history. There's a present under the tree that looks suspiciously Czech mess tin shaped. Merry Christmas to you and yours John and thanks for a great channel. ATB, Malc.

Hi John, nah no trouble here at all. I was right I now own a nice Czech mess kit. I think my wife likes it as she wants to try using the large pot and upturned lid as a poor man's Dutch oven.

These were used by British army in India. Since the bottle was carried hanging from the belt at the hip by the soldier the curve in the bottle fitted well with the body.
