The Davey Boy Smith Routine
docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Today we dig deep into the strength and workout routine of the Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith, better knows as the British Bulldogs.
In they 80s and 90s the redefined not only the Tag Team style, but Dynamites matches in Japanese changed the landscape for cruiserweights all around the world.

    I met Davey boy a few times back in the 90's at t'gym. First time I couldn't believe it, he was so wide. Like a fridge with legs. The gym was owned by a professionally, successful bodybuilder who was big himself, it was an old skool gym; I was used to seeing big blokes in there. But Davey was unreal, like a lifesize He-man doll.

    I used to train at Shakes Powerhouse Gym Seattle back in the 90s, WWF days and when they came to town they would all train there. I met several of the wrestlers, Ultimate Warrior, Lex Luger, Killer Bees, Jim Nighthart, Hercules Hernandez, Mr Perfect and the British Bulldogs. 530 is a decent estimate for Davey’s bench 1RM. I always heard up to 550 - believable considering how massive he got in the early 90s when he was feuding with the Warlord - around 270lbs legit at 5’9” or so. Apparently he maxed out at around 500lbs on deadlift because of a nasty back injury - never went heavier than that

  • @howstrongis

    @howstrongis

    Agree, judging from the bench clips he recorded privately. No reason for him to use any fake plates as a private person. He was built like a freight train.

    I work as a Strength and conditioning coach here in Tokyo with pro wrestlers (when I am not making my little videos here). As for rows, usually the shoulders should move trough the whole Range of motion while pulling(only with a bench they should be rather pinched together). As far as the lower back goes, it should move a little, but on the video it’s a little over exaggerated

    As someone who is training pro wrestlers for a living, its a weird combination of many things. You need the look, a certain amount of strength and power to keep you and your opponent safe, and then you got many random elements and the show part.

    Davey Boy was 5'10, 5'11 max. Based on comparing him to Bret, who's a legitimate 6 foot. He appeared to be an inch or so shorter than Bret.

    @@redfalconnutrition700 If that's the case how short was Dynamite Kid, 5'7? I've met Bret. He was at least 6 feet tall. Davey only seemed an inch maybe 2 inches shorter. That's why I think he was 5'10/5'11 but he could be 5'9.

    @@howstrongis though, I must say, at the pace he was going, it looked like he could've repped out 10 anyway. That would put him on the way, at least to a...600-lbs bench. I'm just asking because I don't follow it that closely but is that an amount that's close to possible for this fellow?
