The Brilliance of Ocarina of Time's Opening Music

Today I took a look at the opening theme from Ocarina of Time and dove into the music theory behind it, how it relates to the plot, and why it is one of my favorite themes from a video game ever. I hope you enjoyed watching and let me know what you wanna see next!

    I remember when I got this game and my older cousin stayed with us for a summer and we would wake up at 5:30am so we could play on the tv for a couple hours before anyone would tell us to turn it off. Miss those days

    Ocarina of Time is one of those games that I can throw on and I could sit for hours watching the opening title sequence and have it not get old. There is something magical about that.

    This video scratched the deepest itch in my soul... I'm a musician, and my late brother was a drummer (he passed in 1999; a long time ago now). This game was everything to me then as it is now -- I always enlisted Mike when I got stuck on the Water Temple, etc. 😂 BUT, trying to explain how deep this game speaks to my soul to ANYone else in my life, family... it's like speaking Greek. It kinda low key hurts like a mf that I have no one to share this with, sometimes. Thanks for making me feel less alone, and teaching me so much with words what I already knew with my heart; that this music is and will always be brilliant. Thank you, Koji Kondo ❤

    Feel you. Same here, this game, along with its sequel hits me so hard, if only because of its ambience, soundscape, and music. Only on the web have I found people as passionate as myself for it. Been wanting to get my brother try it for so long, because, as he shares a ton of tastes with mine, I feel he'd really enjoy it. He's a musician and an artist at heart, as well as a fan of dark and creepy stuff, and he likes action/adventure/RPG games (Skyrim, Alice Madness, PS1 Crash+Spyro are among his faves), so I feel he'd get a real kick outta those games. Unfortunately he seems to have labelled it as something he hates. I say label, because he's never played those games. He's played the original on NES, and tells me he's seen people play the SNES and N64 ones from a distance. He's also seen me play Twilight Princess during a wolf sequence for like a minute (I personally didn't like that game, even less those sequences), to which he commented "what's this game , that's weird". And so his general stance he repeats to me is "I hate Zelda games". Each Zelda game is so wildly different from one another (at the very least in artistic direction), I just... Suffice to say I'm simply not convinced he's actually seen enough to know if he'd like the N64 games. I'm also very bad at communicating. Saying things convincingly without being forceful, gently inviting someone to try something, making them want to hear you out, is not a simple matter, it's a pretty nuanced social/speech skill. With my speech impediment at least, it's not something that comes naturally to me. He, on the other hand is very good at that, and so are most people, I've noticed. Anyway. Maybe he won't like it (he certainly won't if I force him to play), and there are many reasons he wouldn't, but I want to at least see him give it an honest try. And this is a harsh thing in life, it's hard to let go of the opinions of people you have high esteem of. I love my bro, and I really want to share this joy of mine with him, as he also does with a lot of the stuff he likes. It hurts to see him avoid so hard this thing I have so much love for and that I think falls right up his alley, without having even tried it 😢 But I also don't wanna force it. And while I'd love to share this video with him, it won't really speak to him as a non-fan, and I want him to experience the game himself, not be told by others "why it's so good". I'm torn lol. This OoT intro I've come to appreciate and love so much as years went on. It's just so beautiful, powerful if you played the game. And like you I've been absolutely loving videos like this one sharing the passion, but at some point it's still not enough, as I yearn to fill the bro-shaped hole in my heart 😆🥲

    I’ve never been a “Zelda” kid. Played a bit on the old gameboy. But I cried buckets when I completed ocarina of time. I remember thinking it was the end of MY childhood. I’ve never invested so much in any computer game before or since, no matter how many hours I spent on it.

    This is one of my favourite songs in all of gaming. It really captures the somber, nostalgic feeling that the game also reflects on. It's a distorted coming of age story, where Link's childhood is stripped away in an uncertain, uprooted world. It's reflecting on that and giving a mystique about what could be ahead.

  • @henrique88t
    @henrique88t15 күн бұрын

    I guess that's really one of the reasons why it feels really different even to this day. It soothes us in with this calm vibe that feels more "mature" or aged somehow, not rushing around like a sugar-fueled kid like you said. It does reflect the theme of the game that is constantly talking about the flow of time, growing up and dealing with life, but in a manner that when you pay attention to it, it feels very, very melancholic and somewhat meta too. It's interesting that this awesome N64 game in its day now touches me with its more reflective side now as a someone in his 30s.

  • @skeptale
    @skeptale9 күн бұрын

    To me the fact that you "resolving" to the C triad sounded downright wrong shows how brilliant this theme is. It takes a lot of skill to have something sound so natural and so "right" without ever truly resolving its tension.

    Man, I love your breakdown of this gentle, soothing music. I played this game growing up. It was the first Zelda game I really sunk my teeth into, although I was playing NES when the first one came out. I played it so much, but never got to finish it. Later on as an adult in my 30's, I finally got a chance to play it and really explore, and then finally finish it. It was a masterpiece to play. But sometimes I would just turn on the N64, pop this game in and just let the music wash over me and sometimes go to sleep to it. I'm a drummer and I play some guitar and tinker on the piano. My late uncle's nice electronic keyboard was passed on to me and I'm trying to teach myself more because I've always loved the way the piano sounds and the massive variety of sounds and feelings that are evoked by it. Your breakdown (and step by step) has me ready to learn this song! Since I can't read music yet, your video will probably be where I start. I've already learned the first two chords in just a few minutes! Thanks so much for this!!! This is awesome!

    Great video man. Got yourself a sub. I like this style of video - someone who knows what they're talking about just working through a topic in a semi-scripted fashion without too many edits (or attempts to be funny with irritating memes). Makes it feel more like a lecture/tutorial. Just how gorgeous is this piece - so many lovely chords that work beautifully together. Someone else mentioned Satie, and I definitely get that too - very impressionist with all those lovely major 7ths and 9ths without lots of resolution..

    The fact that, as a kid, at the points when I would stop playing the game. I save exit, and end up just staring at the opening cut scene and let it repeat multiple times. Trying to take in all the world for what it was. That opening felt like something that was consistent, like it wouldn’t go wrong. Also gave me the breathing space to think and take in what I just played and it never got in the way. I suppose a genuine liminal space if you will. Like I don’t what mindset it takes to make this, but that mindset has changed, we wont get this again unless inspired.

    This was a very cohesive breakdown of the track; seeing what K.K. could've done to bring closure to the song as well as alternative ways he could've arranged it, showing that even though there were more standard cords and progression that would be more likely to be used, he chose a very unique and purposeful arrangement. Well done
