I think the genius of their styling comes a bit from their first KQ Fellaz look. Ya at the time they only had hats but then you didn't know who they were. They were these mysterious 8 members dancing up a storm in a empty unground parking lot like they just robbed a place and decided to make this diss track really fast after they did this heist. I feel the stylist thought if it worked so well the first time why not try again but do it better?

There is something just viscerally satisfying about Ateez's choreography. It is honest to goodness performance art, imo. It's one thing to have talent, it's another thing entirely to harness talent in such a transformative and transcendent manner.

I'm always worried about San's sharp, violent movements too, he's so captivating yet I always want to scream "San-i no that's too much", his power and passion for performance is unmatched. Seonghwa is not far behind either.🤭

I still remember during Guerilla era when he almost collapsed on stage because he was dancing so hard. Atinys were so concerned, and his response was pretty much, "No, I must DANCE!" Mans has too much passion but we love him for it

I was so mesmerized when I first watched the performance video as a baby atiny. Even without seeing their faces, the energy and intensity was felt through every movement, every cm of their being. I hadn't been into kpop for very long at the time but I had never seen a perf that crazy. And the song was a banger, I couldn't not stan !

I remember my first time watching it and scrolling through the comments. So many people were like "Wow, (insert member) did so good at (insert part)" and I was baffled at how people could tell them apart since they all looked nearly identical and equally passionate... Now I understand. I can literally tell them apart just by their dancing styles.

I only became an Atiny with the Guerilla comeback, even though I've listened to their music for years. So I got really surprised/confused when I found out during Kingdom, that Stray Kids are their Sunbeanims. I always assumed that ATEEZ had their debut in 2015/2016 and just weren't very popular. They were just always so professional and well-rounded on stage, that they must have had years of experience.

Honestly, I think one of the things that I love about Hala Hala is that I can feel the raw emotion in the song. And the emotions it inspires in me. The softer parts of the song fill me with a sense of hope, that even if things are tough, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. And then the parts of the song that just go so hard with no shame, honestly, it just makes me feel so confident and like I could fight a dragon and win. I just love how much of a roller coaster ride the song is.

I became an Atiny in Feb, 2021, but i had been a Babyz(B.A.P's fandom) since Mac,2014. One of the reason why it was so easy for me to stan Ateez is becuz their songs is so good (Answer was their 1st song i heard, and i fell hard) and becuz Ateez reminds me so much of B.A.P (which Daehyun [main vocal] agrees with btw) Watching Hala Hala legit reminds me of Badman or Warrior or Power, with their dynamic and powerful choreos and amazing song + meaningful lyrics My Atiny bestie specifically introduced Ateez to me after B.A.P disbanded becuz "they remind me of B.A.P and i want you to watch/stan them too" Im still a Babyz now, n i fully intend to stan Ateez as long as possible

Ateez (& BTS) feel like they were brought together by a higher power. Like, a bunch of basically underground rookies with raw talent and the willingness to show it. Idk if it's just me but I feel like even if other groups are passionate about music and performing, they don't match or feel the same as those two groups. When I first found Ateez it was like the second coming for me (BTS being the first simply because I discovered them first). Though even with all similar feelings I have towards those groups, San was literally something I knew that was missing but wasn't sure existed. Like, don't get me wrong Taehyung works perfectly as "the demon" in BTS but he's much more subtle than San. I'm so glad I found Ateez (through Hala hala actually) and that you chose to make a video about this song because the only other person I could imagine and hope to do a video like this is Mera. So thank you, amazing work.

Me too! I was looking for more groups to stan after BTS, and some caught my attention, but Ateez was the first one that had me by the throat from the first performance I ever saw (the Wonderland MAMA performance, if you're curious). Hala Hala is such a standout that I couldn't not talk about it. I still think fate was playing some tricks with Ateez and BTS because the stories of how they came together are just wild

the thing i love most about ateez, and hala hala in particular, is that theyre performers...story tellers...and they will do whatever they can to both visually and vocally tell their stories. i also love how they just COMMIT to their concept to their vocals to their dancing literally anything they do, they fully commit to it. seeing their concerts is like going to a theatrical play and i think thats why hala hala is so popular because it embodies all of what ateez are and do

The chokehold this song had on me when I was a babyatiny was crazy and I started stanning them after Inception so long after it’s release. Also I feel like with every single cb they have done after it there are always some atiny hoping the halateez fedoras and costumes would make a cb myself included. And when they add a little spice of hala hala like the hat on deja vu Mv or HALAZIA for example, people go crazy over it so it’s definitely legendary moment in their history

I remember i didn't want to give my full attention to Ateez (other than their music) bc of bad experiences i had before with other groups from small companies. I was like that since pirate king, just listening to their songs and no more. But after Hala Hala... i was sure there was no way those boys were like others. They seem to be brave, daring of showing they really had the talent aside of nice visuals, so i gave it a chance and here we are now.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!!! 👏🏻 I saw the MV first but the live stage is what blew me off my feet. With a dance background, the performance visuals were unlike anything I had ever seen before and still are unmatched to this day. ATEEZ makes other groups seem less exciting. They literally make you feel like you just performed on stage with them, heart racing, breathless and jaw dropped. To me they continue to be ahead of the game and do things differently and that’s specifically what I love about them. They’re goal is to be themselves and not fit a mold and it works for them.

I’m just now watching this video; Hala Hala is ahead of its time, I adore how Ateez intentionally or unintentionally had the mv visuals similar to their Kq Fellaz pick it up performance, where you can’t see their faves but rather all of the member’s talent, the trailer teaser for Hala Hala back then was and still is iconic especially San’s 3D fist move. Hala Hala is just one of those songs/ concepts you can easily point out for being how unique it is. Even during Ateez’s break the wall tour no other song had glitch effects happening while the band was performing at the time than Hala Hala. If you couldn’t tell by this Rapunzel sized comment by now that Hala Hala is one of my all time time favorite song and mv that Ateez, EDENary, KQ Entertainment and everyone involved of creating this masterpiece

I was a casual k-pop fan that just listened to songs and ignored the visuals and videos... Until I stumbled across Wonderland and then Hala Hala. It's their aggression and fire that grabbed me by the throat (lol) and I finally became someone who watches their MVs/stages religiously to get a glimpse of that energy. The use of narrative in their choreography is fascinating, I mean, Wake Up choreo is like watching a graphic novel come to life through dance. Imo, the only group that's come close to matching that energy is SKZ. I'm very proud of Ateez and I hope they know how groundbreaking they are.

my friend was just becoming an atiny when she told me about them being this super intriguing group. so when i got home i put my headphones on and just typed 'ateez' in the search bar and the performance version of 'hala hala' was the first thing that popped up. so i played it on a big screen and just watched a group of dudes whose faces i couldn't even see and the things that got me like 'my fucking god i need to know more' were the vibes, music, voices (mingi and hongjoong stole my fucking heart but mingi's outro man, i just had to know who this guy is). i became a fan of them right away. even my boyfriend who knew nothing about kpop at that time likes them and he (being a rapper himself) really likes their rap line

So, a video that is kind of similar to your NewJeans and Dreamcatcher videos, but about Ateez, would be highly appreciated (sure I can watch guide videos, but I just like your format and style more 😂). You can go as crazy as you want abd bring out your inner fangirl, I think that would actually make people appreciate the video more.

I used to listen to Exo, and I still love some of their songs (Monster, Overdose, Call me baby) and early BTS (Danger, Dope, I need you, Save me...), also way back I listened to some BAP, and now I occasionally listen to Stray Kids, but as I mentioned, I'm a huge girl group stan, so it's often super difficult for me to get into boy groups on a personal level (as in, liking the group for the guys and their personalities). Your upcoming videos would be great, and I'm definitely looking forward to them. 👏✨

Alright get ready for a long comment here 😂 Title tracks you should listen to if you haven't: Answer, Wonderland, Inception, Thanxx, Treasure. If you listen to any of their b-sides, the first two have to be Cyberpunk and New World. Probably two of my favorite b-sides of all time. Other b-sides I would recommend to you: Dancing Like Butterfly Wings, Promise, Desire, Fever, Horizon, Precious, Good Lil Boy, Rocky. I don't know if The Black Cat Nero counts as a b-side or a title track, but I HIGHLY recommend watching their live performance of it on Immortal Songs. They took a children's song and made it rock and you will never look at Jongho the same after the end. Their Wonderland Symphony 9 performance on Kingdom is also probably one of the wildest live performances I've ever seen. As for getting to know the boys, they have a variety show called Wanteez. Episodes 9 and 10 are my personal favorites because you get to see what they're like while high on drugs after a medical procedure, but all of the episodes are great. They also do a lot with Hello82 that is fantastic. Their showterviews with Jessi and Sunmi are a little longer but equally entertaining. All in all, they're a fun group with great music. If you like the vibe of Dreamcatcher, you'll love Ateez too since both groups essentially have no filter 😂

Thank you very much for explaining so much about the song! I only got into K-pop two months ago so I have a lot to learn. I had enjoyed the song and I had thought the dancing was spectacular but I did not realize how out of the ordinary it was. The song “God’s Menu” is the one that came to mind when you described the dancing of “Hala Hala” as violent. The early part of “HH” reminds me very much of something from the early 1990s (from North America or UK) but I can’t place it right now. Needless to say, without your analysis, I would never have guessed how much significance “HH” has. Thank you very much! ❤

I became an atiny in deja vu era so I've never really been able to understand how big of a deal ateez becoming so popular was. but after watching this video it's really hitting me that some of their most popular songs were released just a couple months after debut. one thing that's always impressed me about ateez is their stage presence and dedication to their concepts. and their concepts are crazy on top of that. other groups may have stage presence, but ateez are fully capable and very talented actors. also, you mentioned how they perform so hard that you think they'll actually snap their necks (and SAME). not sure if you've ever heard this story, but in one of their concerts, seonghwa actually broke a RIB and didn't tell anyone while performing HALA HALA. when they all fall to the ground at the end of the song, the members had to drag him off stage because he couldn't move 😭

I don't care how many times I've listened to the song already, when it comes through on my playlist I NEVER SKIP IT!!! It's one song I said I will never skip. And I always find myself dancing to it subconsciously.

I wasn't around yet when Hala Hala dropped, and as a baby Atiny, yes I thought it was a title track and when I found out it wasn't I felt SCAMMED lol (but the fact that it was a b-side to my favorite title track is just whoa). Cyberpunk and Halazia are here now, but Hala Hala and Inception being my favorite b-side and title track respectively still stands. Hala Hala's costuming was the embodiment of ICONIC. It looked like Michael Jackson meets Black Butler's Undertaker (sorry for the strange comparison) and I will always remember the song for that specific style. I liked how you point out how their faces were covered most of the time. As someone who stans Kpop for the songs FIRST (and also biases some of the least/less popular members in a group), I hate the visual-focused/superficial nature of the industry so much. Covering their faces was a genius way to let the group shine as an ENTIRE group itself and Ateez pulled it off well. Besides the interesting chorus, part of the choreography that left an impact on me was the "raise me up, take me up" in the second verse where they marched into formation very seamlessly. It was a very creative way in my opinion to get from point A to point B without simply walking and the fact that they did it so coordinatedly in the performance video is so satisfying! Oh I love your videos! Everything here feels like me talking to myself and analyzing why something amazing is, well, amazing. I appreciate you. If there's one thing that I would add -- because we have the incredible gift of hindsight now -- is that this video IS lore. It establishes HalATEEZ as _literally_ a suicide squad, as the lyrics suggest, but which we didn't see come to fruition until recently. It sets up costuming and storyline and creepy vibes for Say My Name, Answer, and even that cave shot in Illusion (and its other references, like the mask). Even for those not deeply into the lore, Hala Hala establishes the foundation for what will come and what will be. It allows us to see the dark side that would _become_. I love this song/video for a million reasons, but for me, it's the mother of all lore, which adds to my love affair. [Random side note: I think for anyone who isn't a hardcore ATINY, seeing videos of other songs might be confusing when listening to discussion of another song. I know I was expecting to see lots of the different live performances, old and new, of the song, but was surprised by Halazia (which is my fave ever, so no downside).]

If I could like this video a hundred times I would, I agree with everything you said! Hala Hala is still my favourite song from Ateez! I'm a huge fan of the strong, tense, violent energy, power and emotions litterally bursting in me when I'm listening to it! I go crazy every verse, every chorus... I might add that we don't talk much about Mingi's first rap but the instrumental in this part is freaking amazing! It being a kinda different vibe compared with the rest of the song it adds some odd "calm before the storm" ...The storm being the pre-chorus then the anti-drop in the chorus being a strong euphoric moment just after the storm. 4:35 one small note, anti drops were fairly common during K-pop’s tropical edm era in 2015-2017 so by the end of 2017 it was already phasing out but still popular across other genres. ATEEZ was one of many that did it & did it BETTER, hence why Halla Halla is still so distinct and memorable. Chungha & KARD’s debut eras are 2 really great examples of anti drop pre-existing in kpop & popular before ATEEZ utilized it for Halla Halla era. Hope this helps🙌🏽

11:40 Alright, I'm gonna stop you right there and tell you that one Kim "Kai" Jongin has been doing this long before ATEEZ. I know he's known as EXO's sexy beast, but when the darkness calls upon him, he answers. Even within some of his sexier perforamnces, one complaint that wimps (#SorryNotSorry) have had was that he was far too intense and his facial expressions are scary. Anyway, now that I've said my piece, I cackled at the section on stage presence and choreography because the raw intensity and ferocity of both is what dragged me into ATINYville. Idk how one walks away from all of that without becoming a stan, because... Yes, that is incredibly hot to me, but it's also just impressive af. It still boggles my mind that this was their first comeback. I've seen groups with a lot more going for them, who've been together a lot longer than them who don't have this kind of charisma.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TRUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! try not to yell MY ATEEZ challenge FAILED i was told about ateez weeks before say my name, and when i got around to check them out it was just in time to see hala hala drop, like in real time? and nothing up to that point had given me shivers, outside of like. bts end of year performances. dionysus, maybe. black on black, maybe. but nothing was like hala hala, right? one overwhelmed me because i felt pride about the performers prior to it, the other overwhelmed me in sheer quantity. hala hala was terrifying. i have the fanchant ingrained as if part of the song just from how i'd get home from school every day and binge like 3 performances at a time. and i didn't even know their names!!!!! i wasn't looking to stan anyone!!!!! like other people commented, if felt like continuing the kq fellaz anonimity. it was a genius choice to make them look iconic, like you could recognize them anywhere even if you didn't know who was who. and they were super creative with the budget they had. the say my name video switching out to the halateez personas spliced with the last chorus, which is one of their most emotional to date, it just stuck out so much. they had uploaded a shorter video, with just a plain white background, and that has so much impact to this day, i don't think they can ever film a stronger choreography preview - they just might, because they're ateez.

I think someone else said this already in the comments, but the styling for Hala Hala very much reminded me of their KQ Fellaz I performance because new fans (like me at the time) had a stroke trying to figure out who was who. Obviously it also fit into their alter concept stuff, but you're right, it WAS such a bold move and it paid off SO well. I'm also glad that they gave it the promotion and spotlight it deserved. Usually groups will give their title track the most time/effort in the promotional cycle (like maybe a 70/30 ratio, at best), but iirc, Hala Hala got almost the exact same amount of promotional time as Say My Name; I think they promoted SMN and Hala Hala both for a month or so? I think I watched most of the stage performances of Hala Hala back then, and I was so surprised with how many times they were performing it. I remember being worried for Jongho's voice because he refuses to lip sync and he was BELTING the prechorus like a champ. I think another reason that they gave so much attention to Hala Hala (outside of the attention it seemed to be garnering) was because of their "dual titles" concept they were going with. Treasure/Pirate King, SMN/Hala Hala, Wave/Illusion, etc etc. I was a bit sad when they stopped doing that, but glad when they brought it back for Thanxx/Inception and sort of Turbulence/The Real. I always thought that was such a revolutionary thing to do, and really fit the concept of the split/alternate/parallel concept stuff they're doing. Also, Hala Hala's prechorus is one of their best to date, and I will NOT hear any slander about this song or performance! Great analysis video!

They knew they could do the matchy matchy, barely identifiable bit because they were so, so close when they dropped their KQ Fellas dances that went viral. I have a hard time keeping track of who is who in those videos. I usually can tell just by someone's back or posture. I am pondering pulling them into Capcut and adding tiny captions that follow everyone. Great analysis, I agree with everything you had to say. Actually when you said when Attention was released I gasped (I don't listen to Charlie Puth regularly so I thought it was realeased in the early 2010s or smth). Like, 8 months before Hala Hala?! If we consider how early-planned Ateez songs are (I mean they already have them recorded many months before the actual comeback and tease them in the comebacks before), it acually could be that Hala Hala was written and mabye even in the starts of producing before Attention was released? That would be crazy, bcs it wouldn't only be before Antidrop became well known, it would basicly be before anyone knew Antidrops. I don't know when the concept of Antidrops was first discovered and I'm not a music expert but I grew up listening to 60s, 70s, 80z (see what I did there? 😂) music, especially Beatles and I don't remeber hering anything even similar to Antidrops (and the Beatles were expeeeeerimental), so I'll just guess the first Antidrops came up after the rise of the pop music we know today? (Cuz I would say Antidrop is definitly a Pop phenomena). So, in 90/00? It would be really revolutinary if Ateez actually had Hala Hala already planned with the Antidrop before Attention, like really mindblowing and world changing (for me, atleast). I'll do my research to when Antidrops first started and how long Attez normally plans their songs and come back and edit this Bible-lenght comment, but just needed to say those things. Edit: so, I did some research and 1. Attention was actually released in march or april of 2017, so more like 1 and a half years before Hala Hala, but if you search for Attention on spotify it looks like it was released in 2018 so I see why it can be confusing. 2. It was pretty hard to find smth about the history of anti drops but here is what I found: drops in general grew out of the '70s rock, the bass drop first came up in the 80z. Antidrops, for what I found, came up in the mid '10s. First examples (only pre Hala Hala releases) of anti drops or similar things: Rhianna and Calvin Harris - we found love (2011) Katy Perry - Dark Horse (2013) Ariana Grande - Problem (2014) Blackpink - Whistle (2016) Taeyeon - I Got Love (2017) Nu'est W - dejavu (2018) SF9 - Now or never (2018) 'We found love' isn't really an anti drop but I had to include it here bcs based on my research, this song is what started the drop trend in pop music. Drops have been a thing in EDM music for a longer time (correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know much about that genre), but weren't commonly used in pop songs. 'We found love' was the song that made drops in pop songs popular. But the anti drop emerged itself a few years later. 'Dark Horse' is more EDM inspired so that's probably why there's this beat drop. It isn't your typical Anti Drop cuz there aren't any vocals or bass lines. So I would more call it a EDM beat drop and not an anti drop. 'Problem' is what I would consider an actual anti drop. This song is actually so good, that's how you do a nice drop without it getting boring or repetitive. 'Whistle', the first Kpop song on this list. Blackpink and their team themself said that that Whistle almost didn't make it into their debut single, bcs it was so unusual. This is definitly an anti drop, even tho the whistles in the background can seem like an instrumental on the first listen. 'I got love' is interesting bcs that's not what we normaly see from Taeyeon, it kinda gives me 'Can't control myself' vibes. There aren't any vocals, only in the last drop she sings, and the (I think it's cintezizer? How do you spell it?😂) sounds kinda confuses me, so for me it doesn't fall under anti drop but more under sm experimental music. The rest were released after Attention so I'm not gonna talk about them, bcs this is getting too long 3. They tease their songs really really early like in the end of Thanxx MV (08/20) a little bit of Bulnoriya (03/21) was revealed. And to that date, they must've already been sure that they're going to use that part.

11:20 HELP

About a few months ago I rewatched episodes of the show "Empire" and there was a track with the exact same melody/beat of Hala Hala. I knew Ateez's song since release so I was surprised who actually created the melody. The song from the show is called "Magican" (it's on YT). Maybe somebody knows more about the topic and hopefully Im not the only one that noticed it 😅 (Btw I love the show and don't want to spread hate or anything. I can really recommend to watch it)

i love your channel, your videos and topics and your voice is v nice imo lol n e ways i LOVE hala hala and if anyone tells me they might be getting into ateez i’m like OHMYGOD OKAY SO. HALA HALA. FCKING MASTERPIECE ITS SO GENIUS AND THEY SLAYED GO WATCH IT! because facts. it’s one of my fav ateez songs (i also really adore horizon and precious (overture) bc omg) and thinking about how they pulled it off makes me so proud as an atiny. ateez are my ults and while i love to look at how far they’ve come in their time and see their improvement you can’t deny that they were amazing from the start. zero to one was probably written and (at least mostly) produced at the time of their debut and i’m glad that they didn’t take that as their debut, because i think that might’ve been more likely to backfire, but like ohmygod. amazing.

Thank you! No doubt Ateez was fantastic from the get go. Zero to One is still one of my favorite works from them, and I'm so sad that the other b-sides on it don't get enough attention (Desire in particular, I have an agenda). I also agree that Horizon and Precious are standouts. I had to take a minute after hearing Horizon's second pre chorus because GOD that harmony with the Choi bros is immaculate.

I too was think the same recently, that what if Ateez started their career with say my name and Hala Hala. That could have gone bad both ways ; 1st - Very high expectations for their first comeback if people noticed them then - 2nd. Under appreciation for this piece of art if got the same treatment as treasure promotions 😢 during their debut. Thank God, Kq decide to make it part of their comeback promotions, leaving people then and new fans like me stun about the whole experience. Treasure: zero to one is great album and I need justice for Desire; it's not spoken about enough. I have also started to think desire may be the sound inspiration for deja Vu especially the chorus melody ( sounds very sexy). 😁🤭

3:10 i don't want to sound bad, but i'll correct you a little bit: the "another" performance ver. of the hala hala m/v released on stone music's channel is actually THE SAME m/v that was uploaded here since ateez, just like others also have a distributor for their albums which is of course the aforementioned stone music entertainment (the same things are for example with the groups from the companies who are a part of kakao entertainment) and that's why whenever ateez have a comeback the same m/v for the title track would be uploaded twice, one on kq's official youtube channel and another one on stone music's channel

Not gonna lie, I wasn't a fan of ATEEZ's music back then. I tuned in for their debut and it wasn't my cup of tea, it was the same for their other releases afterward for various reasons. but the one song I liked and the only ATEEZ song I had in my playlist for the longest was HALA HALA. It was after kingdom that I decided to give them another chance because they really impressed me. some of the older title tracks I ended up liking others are still not my cup of tea but now I'm an ATINY. Long story short HALA HALA is iconic and was definitely a pivotal moment in their career.

The worst indoctrination into ateez is hala hala ending and wonderland halloween stage. You get terrified out of your soul and are unable to hear the name ateez without getting trauma until years later you find turbulence. Yeah, that was my journey.

Another song and perfomance that I think has sort of the same vibe to Hala Hala is Frost by TXT, particularly in the vocal department (I always worry about them breaking their voices during the chorus)

Definitely look up B.A.P. "pioneered the idea of raw unattractive performances being attractive" That is what B.A.P. brought to the game and arguably Block B as well. There's nothing new or original about what ATZ does here, it just hadn't been seen in a while.
