Brian seemed to me to be the epitome of an English gentleman. He was always well spoken and well dressed with an air of quiet confidence. There also seemed to be a sadness and loneliness about him but he was a kind and considerate person as well. It is very unfortunate that he died so young never reaching the happiness he deserved.

It appeared cos he was gay, he had to supress it all the time. Nine schools, army didn't work. This had an impact on his whole life. Shame he could not just come out as they say. Always afraid of being caught or exposed must have been scary for people in prominent positions.

Epstein’s main problem was not depression, although it became a problem because of his real problem; he was a gay man who could not be himself because of the hatred and bigotry against gay men. Now add being the manager of the biggest music act ever...he could never be who he was...one of the most tragic fates for anyone really.

Sadly young Beatles fans ie Millennials don't look beyond JPG & R. He was as important as they were & George Martin is important too, he musically & Brian got them into great suits, no quiffs & to bow but never to lose their vivacity. In Beatles press interviews he would stand to the side, well away from cameras & let them be the centre of attention & not to curb them in any way. Brian was only about 8 years older than them but seemed a different generation. The Elvis era had passed him by, he was in this no man's land between Sinatra & Elvis. Teen-agers had yet to evolve with Elvis & Co which the Beatles ages timed nicely. Brian was more into classical music but I would have loved too know how he really felt about rock n roll. His death was accidental as many other pop deaths were.

Brian got burned out with his personal life emotionally, he was gay, and that was illegal in England in those days, and professionally. He was a good businessman and manager. Most mistakes that he made were due to being a pioneer, no one else had done a lot of what he did before in the music business. He died of an accumulation of drugs over time in his body. RIP

I’ve always thought (and always will think) that the death of Brian Epstein was the most cataclysmic event in the Beatles entire career. Without him, they were lost. I also think that the Beatles NEVER would have broken up if Brian had lived. Yes, Yoko still would have been there. However, Brian knew how to lower the temperature in that situation. Most importantly, the problems with Apple & the Allen Klein vs. the Eastmans NEVER would have happened. At worst, a break up might have happened many years later. But I doubt it. They would have stayed together for good. Sadly, we will never know for sure…….

Sad story.......without Brian, the world would never have had the Beatles. The world would be entirely different. Brian Epstein deserves to be remembered. Lennon's message that "All You Need Is Love" is really how Brian dedicated himself to the Beatles and his other artists in his short life. People forget the militarization of the youth and the horror of world war that existed just 20 years earlier. Epstein and the Beatles played a major role in stopping that from happening in their generation....on BOTH sides of the Iron Curtain !

The Beatles were so incredibly gifted, it seems it would've been only a matter of time before the world woke up and discovered them. Question is ... without Brian's infatuation and drive, would they have kept slogging away until that happened, one rejection after another? Would they have given up, eventually? Thankfully, we'll never know. The one thing we DO know is, without Brian the world after Ed Sullivan on February '64 would be verrrrrrrrrry different.

Yes, it's interesting to ponder. But, the bottom line is that Brian created the group's initial look with the matching suits and hairstyles. And he did all the hustling to push them forward , get them a record contract and get them into the American market.....successfully.... something that took a lot of effort.

John confirmed to Playboy that Brian was in love with him and I think John was not indifferent to Brian. I remember the scream therapy. His doctor said John had talked about Brian. Brian must have been important to John, he was more than a manager and maybe more than a friend. I always thought that something happened between them in Spain. Yoko also said that John was bisexual. However I love John and Brian

The Beatles at the train station were in utter shock, so dependent on him without thinking what this man had done for them. Once they stopped touring, Brian had lost his touchstone that kept him grounded. He started taking drugs in the pill form of uppers & downers & he just took too much that night. Purely accidental. Music wise it didn't change anything but without Brian the band slowly started to fracture.

  • @garyginther6742

I think Paul was only half right - Brian was like a 5th Beatle in his camaraderie with the Fab Four, but he didn't have the cheeky attitude in public, nor was he capable of it. And he was also homosexual. That would NEVER have fit in. But he was as close to them and as good a friend as they were to each other. And Brian did not contribute musically to the band except in one very important way - he gave them excellent feedback and advice on EVERYTHING, it seemed like, not just music. George Martin was ALSO half a 5th Beatle. He contributed in innumerable ways to their SOUND on records. And one could say Billy Preston was a 5th Beatle on some Abbey Road and Let It Be cuts. "John Lennon was in favour of making Preston a full (5th) member of the band; Paul McCartney disagreed, saying there was little point as the band was close to splitting." [The Beatles Bible] And finally, John would have very much been in favor of making Yoko a 5th Beatle. I believe he said as much, as far as her having an equal voice in decisions about recording the songs - in essence making her like a 5th Beatle. John was off his nut sometimes.

If this program is blocked in Germany, are you able Sola174 to buy a DVD of it?? If not, I call bullshit. One of the biggest I have with copyright and youtube is that people upload these obscure documentaries and interviews. The TV channel, the record label demand that it be taken down, but they don't allow viewers a chance to buy it. I don't feel they should be allowed to do that unless there is a purchasing alternative. These programs are priceless, historical artifacts to music lovers and Beatles fanatics.

Marianne Faithful is very smug about her opinions of Brian, especially her attitude about Brian being a provencal northerner aspiring to be a big city Londoner. She was an aspiring debutante clouded in a drug stupor most of the time, hanging on to Jagger like a jilted groupie. She ended up a suicidal junky. By the end of the 60's. Yet she feels qualified to partake in pyschoanalyzing Brian's problems.

At that time, strong barbiturates and amphetamines were given out on prescription with very little reservation. Over time these drugs, each in their own way, can cause depression and personality changes. Elevating doses and dependency were not uncommon for so-called, "normal people". At this time, a lot of people died from accidental overdose.

Please don't confuse dependance with addiction. A diabetic is dependent upon insulin yet is not addicted to insulin. Here in 2023 chronic pain patients from many illnesses are being treated like drug addicts because they rely on opiod analgesics perscribed by their doctors to control their pain so they can live as normal life as possible. The CDC allowed a bunch of anti opiod zealots like Andrew Klodney to write guidelines for opiod perscribing thats distroyed pain management as we know it. Doctors didn't over perscribe opiod analgesics ever. The DEA allows Heroin and Fentanyl to flow unrestricted into the country. So to look like they are doing their job someone had to take the blame. Our doctors were targeted. Now in 2023 amputations, mastectomies and much more are not given pain relief via opiods but told to meditate and try breath control. The suffering is unbelievable in this new sadistic opiod hysteria. Sorry for the rant but you are one accident or botched surgery away from becoming a chronic pain patient and needing opiod analgesics. Check out the American pain and disability foundation site on Facebook and look at the Richard Lawhern files on LinkedIn and Facebook and Quora to see the truth. These two groups are experts in the war on drugs and the lies being told to the unsuspecting public via a complicit media. Do it for yourself and your family. Remember that denying pain relief is called TORTURE.

So I came across a link of a compilation of the Beatles making statements in regard to taking drugs. Per Ringo, if they got too messed up, they'd still record and have fun doing it, but in sessions like that, they'd listen to it the next day, and they'd say they were going to have to redo it...they wouldn't release anything without being at a certain level of artistic excellence based on their scrutiny of the work. I'm saying this to say how much do you have to be chemically destroyed before you look at your artistic performance from the day before when you were loaded and say "man we were really loaded; we're gonna have to do that again" versus being so destroyed that you are just not functional, in a non-functional stupor, like how the Stones described Brian Jones condition when they finally let him go, versus when you get so freaking loaded that it kills you"? Does Brian Epstein come off as anywhere close to "man, we totally saw that one coming..."? I mean the video of John when making his statement, looks genuinely in shock...not like "whoa man, we saw that coming from a mile away..."...at the time Brian was reported as having passed away, he was up $10,000,000 and the Beatles Sgt Pepper's album was at number one in the UK and in the United States...so, here's a link of an interview with Brian 5 months before he died... kzread.info/dash/bejne/kWSfqqOqlqrUlrQ.html

That's too bad Brian felt he wasn't free to pursue something he wanted to do with fashion and design. It's obvious he's creative but must have felt the overbearing displeasure of his Dad trying to quell his interests. "You must follow in the family biz!"....No way would I put up with that. I'd rebel. Of course you're gonna put your foot down if your kid wants to be a criminal but nothing wrong with designing clothes. Forcing your kids to be a doctor, lawyer or Indian chief never works. Forcing them to go to college when that's not what they want to do is a mistake. As long as their interests aren't criminal or immoral then encourage and not dissuade them. Don't push them into something you wish you had done or live vicariously through them. Let them be their own individuals. If they need help/guidance then give what you can. Love and support them. Maybe they love animals or want to fight to protect the environment (land or sea), carpentry, music, write books, etc.....plenty of interesting things to do. Let them be.....

Seems like the perfect storm: two great songwriters meet a Jewish business man who understands how to market these boys . Plus a producer, so good, that Paul could hum a part and tell him the general sound he needed and that producer grew and expanded the bands music. It went from humble but bright buddy holly type stuff, to lsd drenched mayham and everything in between. My son is a robust 31 years and I’m deeply saddened that Brian passed at a tender age. He missed so much. Rip
