The Breakfast Club (1985) - Bender Mocks Claire

Ойын-сауық

In this classic scene from the iconic 80s film The Breakfast Club, Claire (played by Molly Ringwald) shows off an impressive trick with her lipstick, wowing everyone in the room - except for John Bender (Judd Nelson). Bender mocks Claire, calling her a daddy's girl who always gets what she wants, while he has nothing. The contrast between the privileged Claire and rebellious outsider John Bender highlights the class differences and social dynamics at play between The Breakfast Club characters.

Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall) then asks the group a poignant question - what will happen on Monday when they return to school? The Saturday detention has forged an unlikely bond between these five disparate students - the princess Claire, the rebel John Bender, the geek Brian Johnson, the jock Andrew Clark (Emilio Estevez), and the outcast Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy). Brian now sees them as friends, but wonders if those friendships can survive in the harsh social hierarchy of high school. His question cuts to the heart of the film's exploration of identity, belonging, and the labels we assign ourselves and each other.
The Breakfast Club, directed by John Hughes and starring Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, and Ally Sheedy, is a defining coming-of-age film of the 1980s. This classic movie will be available to stream on Netflix starting June 1, 2024.

What’s the The Breakfast Club movie about?
On a Saturday morning, five students report for all-day detention : Claire (Molly Ringwald), a snobbish beauty; Brian (Michael Hall), a brainiac; Andrew (Emilio Estevez), a wrestler; John (Judd Nelson), a rebel; and Allison (Ally Sheedy), a shy girl with unusual behaviour. Assistant Principal Vernon assigns them an essay, in which each must describe "who you think you are". John ignores the rules and riles up the other students, but they all eventually admire him after seeing how he interacts with abusive adults like Vernon. Then the students pass the time by talking, and gradually open up and discover they all have poor relationships with their parents. The students realize that, despite their differences, they face similar problems. Claire gives Allison a makeover, which sparks romantic interest from Andrew. Claire decides to break her "pristine" innocent appearance by kissing John. Although they suspect their new relationships will end along with their detention, they believe their mutual experiences will change the way they look at their peers. Brian completes the essay for everyone and as the students part ways, Allison and Andrew kiss, as do Claire and John. Vernon reads the essay, in which Brian states that Vernon has already judged who they are using stereotypes, and that Vernon is crazy if he thinks they'll tell him who they are.

you absolutely missed the mark on Bender’s character. he’s not a hater. Go to the principal Vernon confrontation scene. he’s been mentally and abused for most of his life, so he uses his attitude to protect himself

I mean, for me, the movie actually does do a really good job of encapsulating what it's like mentally to be a part of any of the 5 groups/clicks which are represented. In the end, it helps you to understand that even if everyone is different, most people have a good heart underneath what they represent themselves as, and they're actually not very different from one another. I dunno. I love the movie for that reason specifically. It's got a great message which I resonate with. Everyone's got different opinions.
