The Breakfast Club (1985) - Are You Dating?
Ойын-сауық
In this iconic scene from the classic 80s film The Breakfast Club, John Bender (played by Judd Nelson) relentlessly taunts his fellow students about their social status, dating lives, and personal interests. Judd Nelson's portrayal of the rebellious outsider Bender is on full display as he targets the popular Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald), the jock Andrew Clark (Emilio Estevez), the nerdy Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall), and the quirky Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy) with his biting insults and mockery.

Bender's harsh comments serve to highlight the stereotypes and cliques that define the high school experience. By poking fun at Claire's popularity, Andrew's athletic achievements, Brian's academic focus, and Allison's eccentric hobbies, Judd Nelson's character Bender exposes the superficiality of these labels and the pressure to conform to societal expectations. This scene is a prime example of how The Breakfast Club delves into the complexities of teenage identity and the struggle to break free from the roles assigned to us by our peers and society at large.
Experience the magic of this timeless coming-of-age story, featuring an all-star cast including Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, and Ally Sheedy, when The Breakfast Club arrives on Netflix on June 1, 2024.

What’s the The Breakfast Club movie about?
On a Saturday morning, five students report for all-day detention : Claire (Molly Ringwald), a snobbish beauty; Brian (Michael Hall), a brainiac; Andrew (Emilio Estevez), a wrestler; John (Judd Nelson), a rebel; and Allison (Ally Sheedy), a shy girl with unusual behaviour. Assistant Principal Vernon assigns them an essay, in which each must describe "who you think you are". John ignores the rules and riles up the other students, but they all eventually admire him after seeing how he interacts with abusive adults like Vernon. Then the students pass the time by talking, and gradually open up and discover they all have poor relationships with their parents. The students realize that, despite their differences, they face similar problems. Claire gives Allison a makeover, which sparks romantic interest from Andrew. Claire decides to break her "pristine" innocent appearance by kissing John. Although they suspect their new relationships will end along with their detention, they believe their mutual experiences will change the way they look at their peers. Brian completes the essay for everyone and as the students part ways, Allison and Andrew kiss, as do Claire and John. Vernon reads the essay, in which Brian states that Vernon has already judged who they are using stereotypes, and that Vernon is crazy if he thinks they'll tell him who they are.

It's kind of wild how Bender stood up for Brian (pointing out Claire's hypocrisy toward him) while also running him down at the same time. It's quite a skill to shade and support in the same sentences.

Andrew and Claire were not dating. You can tell that by the way Andrew came into the library, looked at Claire and pointed at the vacant seat beside her, as if to say, "do you mind if I sit beside you?" Claire didn't smile back. She kind of shrugged her shoulders as if to say, "I don't care," or "whatever?" They weren't "boyfriend/girlfriend" as Bender had intimated. They just knew each other from common social circles because they were both popular kids.

Top notch acting right there. Something you can't expect from the likes of Rings of Power, where they throw millions at pretty set pieces, but not acting skill.

What was Allison doing? 1:04
@anslagstavlan
3 жыл бұрын
Well I think she might've been doing one of two things. 1. She maybe just wanted to watch and listen to the conversation. 2. Maybe she and Bender made eye contact when Andrew was talking about belonging and not fitting in, like if they were sort of looking at eachother as examples of outsiders. Throghout the movie, they do sort of have some sort of abstract respect for eachother, since neither of them really felt like they fit in anywhere.
@jilliank6379
3 жыл бұрын
@@anslagstavlan I honestly thought Bender and Allison should’ve ended up together. It’s a lot more realistic. Claire cared too much about what other people thought about her. She even said herself in the film that she wouldn’t hang out with any of the other characters outside of detention. Allison didn’t care about what anyone thought of her. Also, if you remember, Bender NEVER picked on Allison throughout the film. He even stood up for her by saying “She doesn’t talk, sir” when Vernon was interrogating her. Bender also told Allison in the beginning of the movie “I’ve seen you around, you know”. That’s the thing about Allison. EVERYONE ignored her except Bender. And to add a little experience in the mix, I was pretty much just like Allison in middle school and can confirm that people like us never went for jocks like Andy 🤷♀️. I get that John Hughes was trying to convey the message that stereotypes don’t apply often, but Bender and Allison are just a lot more realistic.
