This video explores the world of simple logical robots as described by Valentino Braitenberg in his book Vehicles, Experiments in Synthetic Psychology. With very simple linkages between sensors and actuators you can develop robots that exhibit surprisingly complex behaviors.

I guess watching this video made me understand the deep learning principle better. “The notion of depth in a neural network is linked to the idea that you can express something complicated by doing many simple things in sequence”. I think this really makes sense with what Braintenberg demonstrates.

BEAM Robotics. Super simple robots that exhibit emergent behaviors depending on their component properties and how they interact with the environment. Neurons and neural nets. Really neat stuff.
I found the term Braitenberg through browsing a 23 year old university website on robot navigation, remembered "mousey the junkbot" from my youth, read a little about Braitenberg and then later just searched for Braitenberg vehicles on KZread. This is downright fascinating.
While studying Digital Signal Processing (digital filters, Fourier and Wavelet transforms, etc) my professor also used to say that "synthesis is easier than analysis"

Great video I use some of the same concepts, without programmable chips, and is based on Mark Tildens BEAM Bots which uses logic chips, of course, to do the same functions, though I use it as a learning tool for friends and family

Brian, thank you for the video and the book recommendation. i loved the concept. two things i wanna suggest for future videos. 1) programming the arduino theoughout simulink is a lot more interactive than coding i think. Mathworks have their own free arduino support package. 2) i am currently working on neural networks and i think it is really interesting to explore such an amazing control systems tool and educate others about it. i always look up for ur videos and i am thinking about starting my own inspired-by-you channel. love and respect. AJ

Hi Brian! This was a wonderful video, thank you so much for creating it! I am curious about the robots you demonstrated at the end. One of the robots seems to exhibit selectivity in its 'love' and keeps docking to a specific robot when faced with the option of two, if I am not wrong. What programming logic did you use to make the robot exhibit that kind of behavior?

This was a lovely charming video but a thought occurs to me. If we take these simple proportional controllers as exhibiting an emotion or goal, then we also have to accept that other things have the same feelings. But then again, humans and other animals evolved only to survive and reproduce. Sentience must be a byproduct of existence or it would not have evolved at all.

Give some lectures about model reduction or robust control, having tough time on those subjects, just cannot understand the boring math forms. Maybe you know how to demonstrate!!!!

The great thing is that those robots could be made without a microcontroller! You could just do it with a simple circuit.
I am design a animal behavior robot and I like your recommendation.
Potential fields....
I dont even code or anything, why was this in my recommended? My immediate thought to the final video of multiple robots interacting is that given a specific enough trigger like a particular colour of light to react to simple robots could perform compicated tasks and works as a swarm in a domestic enviroment
Maybe stop calling it "AI" because it's still really just Searle's version of "ML"? You can still grant Cole and everyone else their critiques of Searle, but there's no AI in there doing semantics. There's no "book" big enough or comprehensive enough to statically cover a predestinate set of answers. Plus? You should have spent more time on the Vehicles book. :)
