The box that makes synths better: Eventide H90 Demo

Being a demo of Eventide's H90 dual effects box being glorious on two Mackie 1604 aux sends, and a document of all the vibes that ensued. I really like Eventide effects (and own a H3000), so this is also a love letter to their glory, and to simple hardware music jams.

    I have the H90 routed in dual mode in my guitar rig. The flexibility to have an algorithm before or after ( or both) in my effects chain is very powerful. The effects are the best I have ever experienced. You may only get 2 "blocks" but they are the best 2 blocks in your chain. You get what you pay for in my humble opinion.

    I used to have the space and could not forget the lovely modechoverb! Got a H9 now and it’s greatness but also a lot to explore and needs time on it to maximize the ROI. Eventide sounds very digital too me but in a good crystal and bright way. The stereo Image is unparalleled and a great plus to adding wide stage to mono elements. I prefer it also a lot over other hyped modules like FX aid, that did not work for me.

    I came to hear an 808 and was presented with an 08, that's clickbait! ;-) But then I got to experience an entertaining and varied hardware jam, which was drenched in the magic of Eventide effects. It always amazes how much a great FX unit can make out of otherwise rather "boring" sounds. Thanks for showing this again! --- #verdict > *Effects are to music creation what seasoning / herbs are to cooking* imho. I overlooked the power of this for decades basically. Still do, but at least I am aware of this now 😀 So, I think that I really should "invest" in one great effect unit and then learn that one 100%.

    I've recently gotten really into pedals, and its really a whole route of modular synthesis that in general seems cheaper than going the eurorack route (the H90 being a bit of a monster of an exception); using a Zoia + three or four other pedals, I realized it almost doesn't matter what synth I use to feed into the chain.

  • @Space_pulse

    @Space_pulse

    I feel that. Getting a Zoia and H90 made it a lot easier to quell my gas for other things, especially my desire for a big expensive poly synth, and I’m almost tempted to pull back from 9u to 6u in the Eurorack.

  • @mdeerocks6792

    I agree, I use VCV and spend more time making modular effects than I do on synth sounds. A lot of synths are the same basic waveforms but effects are where the creative potential is for me. Some of the pitch fx here are the only thing I can't do with VCV and plugins, so I'd love to buy an H90 too. Just can't justify the price unfortunately but it's a monster unit!

    No, mono sends! But you could use separate sends to send in true stereo. Or you could use a patchbay and mult the signal out twice. Of course some FX are mono input even with stereo ins (ie. the block isn’t true stereo!) actually not sure if that’s the case on H90, would need to RTFM

    Yo!! Thank you - so this is dead simple and just uses a mixer with aux sends, and I’m using two of them, one aux send goes to one in on the H90 and the other to the other block input - ie. both mono sends - with the stereo outs going to stereo returns on the mackie. Arguably you could have more fun if you put the stereo returns onto dedicated stereo channels on the mixer so you had more control over them and then could also use the sends on those channels to create feedback/cross FX-ing. So yeah it’s nice to have a mixer involved if you don’t already!

    Ha thanks - I do wonder myself about that but it’s likely a combo of all of these. That’s some of the music I love best, and when you work with similar setups to what they had, it kinda falls out of them. Not to say that musical styles are totally reliant on the gear used obvs (you can do anything with anything if you’re creative enough), but it feels like the gear lends itself better/more easily - or it could be that it inspires me to work with them in that way. I dunno! Everyone should have at least 1 ultra basic proto 90s techno/electro setup in the corner of the studio, and it can be and probably should be made with the cheapest nastiest gear you can just about afford.

    @@mylarmelodies That's a great idea. I so often get caught up in designing the perfect setup, whereas this idea of having some self contained smaller setups of a particular vibe is an interesting one. I guess my basic 90s corner is my RM1x, I should power that up and treat it as a 90s studio in a box more often. I'm also interested in template setups in the box. Setting up a template of a particular studio with say a 106, a 101, a drum machine and a rompler, then sticking with that setup like you would have to if you had the hardware. That would be an interesting way of working. And you could have different ones. The 90s techno template. The extravagant 80s synth studio. Could lead to some interesting virtual spaces to work in.

    6:50 I feel that pattern was so punchy and naturally compressed, that I prefer that pattern clean. I get the H90 but I've never been a fan of running synths thru an effects box that does "cascading 5ths", or "infinite shimmer" or "rising arpeggios". I prefer those ideas be done on the synth using modulation or sequencing. No reason why, I just feel like the original vibe gets lost in the over-effected world. And nobody loves a good analog or tape delay, or 12-bit vintage Lexicon reverb more than I. I'm not Marc Doty :). But since I dismissed the first example, I will say that I do love your example at 8:15. That reverb has hairy reflections that are nice.

    @@mylarmelodies if only it had 2 pedals worth of knobs. I still want one. I'm assuming I could have 1 knob adjust the same parameter for multiple fx simultaneously? For example, is there an option to switch wet/dry mix for all the fx currently running, vs only for the delay? You know what, I'll check out other H90 videos. I could consolidate a few different pedals with this instead. Lately I've been using only 1 pedal (Ventris, nothing fancy) for convenience, but wishing it had more weird pitching/delay stuff to play with. I can get chorus and a karplus like sound with it. I can get micropitch via my mixer's stereo taps delay, very short time, long feedback. I'm pretty sure I prefer the Eventide algos just a little bit, smoother. A bunch of pedals, all with their own knobs, is fun too, but I tend to not keep things like that set up for long. Thanks for the sound demos. It's between this and a Microcosm, but this seems to sound more luxurious, and definitely is more versatile, probably less identifiable by a specific sonic signature, too.

    Dunno, i don't think this pedal is worth the near $900 price tag. For $500 more, you can get the top tier Line 6 effects rack. And it surely can do much more than $500 worth of great sounding effects of all sorts. Some companies and their silly pricing can crack me for a great laugh or two. I rarely see people using the H90, as a matter of fact, I don't think i've ever seen it at a live show. Other than demos, i know i've never seen anyone use it, on KZread, as part of their work flow. I also never hear people talking about it. Yep, I'd like to see the sales numbers for the H90, i'm certain it'd be a dismal thing to see.

    Sound quality issue. If you check waves plugins against the hardware u-he version it's immediately apparent the price for the plugins is insulting. H90 is pro gear, so has a nasty price tag , but yes it's fair to ask where's all the money going.

    Hey, nothing personal, folks really seem to dig this video, but the voiceover made it impossible for me to watch. It set off my misophonia something fierce. I found the delivery overly intimate, the recording proximity invasive, and the high-end forward vocal enhancement unnecessary and distracting. I was hearing the recording more than the words. This video benefits from your knowledgeable commentary and musical skill, not the mouth-level detail of your voice. You could get away with a more conventional recording/delivery for sure. Wishing you and your channel a fruitful 2024!
