THE BOX | Omeleto

Фильм және анимация

The box is full of miserable creatures -- but one of them doesn't belong there.
THE BOX is used with permission from Dusan Kastelic. Learn more at bugbrain.com.
In a strange, dark box lives a group of box-headed elderly humanoid creatures with roots instead of legs. Most of these creatures are sunken into a catatonic sleep, unaware of anything outside their hermetic, sealed-off world.
But one of them emerges from the crowd, stunned into consciousness. Young and growing, the creature starts to cause a joyful ruckus, but struggles against the disapproval and rancor of the rest of his box-dwellers. But then the youngster begins to fight back, looking for a way outside the box but coming against its most oppressive forces yet.
Writer/director/animator Dusan Kastelic's short animation is a surreal yet exuberant allegory about the pleasures and perils of non-conformity, being an individual and pushing through obstacles to a new level of consciousness.
The narrative takes the phrase "outside the box" and spins it into a deeply imaginative, hypnotic narrative that resembles a fairy tale. Not a sanitized children's version of a fairy tale, however: the film instead resembles the original European fairy stories, which were dark, psychologically complex and disquieting in their emotional violence.
The images are nightmarish, with their evocations of distorted flesh and murky colors. But the expressiveness of the creatures and attention to detail -- created in open-source 3-D software Blender -- are remarkable from a technical and emotional level, and draw in viewers with a powerful combination of gesture, sound and storytelling.
Despite the claustrophobic world portrayed in the film, there are splashes of zany humor and joy, particularly as the younger creature expresses its unbridled childlike self. The musical score and sound design by Mateja Staric go a long way to create contrast between stultifying conformity and youthful individualism, as well as keeping the narrative at a consistently engaging pace.
Despite its strange appearance, the uninhibited joyousness and high spirits of the newly emergent creature are so much like the energy of children, and viewers cannot help but relate. Yet THE BOX becomes genuinely sad and painful as the youngster is repeatedly brought down and cut down to size, and confronts the mechanisms of the box itself that keep its inhabitants docile and in the dark.
Watching that struggle becomes a powerful metaphor for the oppression and conformity that we all face, whether it's the box that society puts us inside or the ones we put ourselves in. To watch the creature struggle against a dark, narrow world is hard, and yet, as the creature discovers, as long as you can feel a spark of an essential self, there is always a way towards the light.

The short is an allegory about conformity - nearly all societies expect their members to conform to their norms. This story encouraged us to break free from those societal constraints to follow our true passions and, hence, our true selves. It ended with the protagonist breaking free from those (societal) constraints. A sequel wouldn't really make sense.

Getting out of the box, is to have the courage to be different and remain true to your self. That is what for me meant this film. Decide to be different, to think outside of the box, to escape that box filled with limitations from society but also from our own self perceptions and the limitations we imposed to ourselves and project into others. You were born to be different!!

Mr. Dusan Kastelic and Mr. Mateja Staric and the whole team behind the creation of this superb short film. My hearty congratulations to you all. It was not only a great animated story but it started lot of thought process in mind. New path finder is always discouraged is one of the thoughts. Nobody encourages the person who starts thinking out of the box is another thought. But above all, a thought came to my mind is little spiritual type. We are all prisoners in the hands of unknown destiny. That destiny has bound us to earth and we are just behaving like puppets in destinies hand. But rarely there is someone who thinks differently and gets himself free out of this box called as life. Once again, thanks for a thought provoking great short film. All the best. Shrirang V. This is my analysis: The light in the kid's eyes is happiness. The flat-headed guys have became miserable because of their envy. They get mad at other's happiness, and they celebrate other's failures. That's why they can't stand the kid's joyful singing. They have no happiness (hence no light in their eyes) and they can't stand others being happy. See that guy at 6:05 get scared as he sees the kid has grown taller and also developed legs? That's an envious person's ego feeling threatened. So the whole envious squad shouts to draw the machine's attention, because they know what will happen when that machine comes down. They want to bring down the young dude to make him unhappy like themselves. That's why they all laugh at him getting hammered down. You know what's the worst part about this? They know how it works because they've been there before. They were all joyful once, and got smacked because of other's envy too. And still they can't even let others be happy. I think that's how envious people work in the real world too.

I love how everyone understands something different. To me it's like a metaphor of giftedness. He's an active child, a trouble maker trying to create beauty and happiness but misunderstood. He refuses to fit in so much that society brings him down psychologically (The machine hitting his head). But his will is so strong he realizes something is wrong with the box he lives in. He manages to escape, doing something the others thought was impossible. They all gape at him, realizing he might have been a failure by their standards, but he achieved something no one else ever did. Edit: I've come to learn that gifted children are way better treated in the US than in my country; in Spain there are no advanced classes, an abnormal IQ is medicated and treated like a disease, and 2 of every 3 gifted kids drop out before finishing highschool and most suffer from bullying and depression at some point. We have a society that is very much focused on standing out as little as possible. Just some context.

Dude, everyone talks about the same thing, just using different words, just like you. The eon old idea of being trapped into a system of control that works outside your sphere of influence, i.e. gods, demons, spirits, "the system", society, you name it. Funny how everyone seems to miss that. Its an artistic depiction of some very old esoteric core teachings together with warnings of dangers and consequences for those following a certain path, like the one you described. Its an archetype that has its roots outside the knowable and manifests itself within the world in countless forms. Some of them can be read in the comments here, but most of them are very basic, barely touching the surface of what this archetype really points to, because going down that road gets very scary very fast.

He got out of the box - the box of same old miserable reality people accept as the only choice they have, he ascended, he evolve, he made a choice - he chose to be different and not fall back into the norms of complacency of the old way of life or accepting he could not change anything for the better. They tried to make him like them and their view of life and to fit into their beliefs, they tried to stop him expressing himself and what made him unique so as to make him the same as them. This is what happens to every child to make them fit in to the prescribed view of how things should be. This is for all those people who get bullied and ostracized for being different and for not fitting in the same box as everyone else.

This has happened to me. Once I met a girl, she went to my house, right from the start I realized she was free, she could express her emotions freely, she was so spontaneous and kind! She was full of joy, she sang a song when my sister asked her to because she saw her in a small concert and it was beautiful. She was smart and so involved in the moment... I thought she was amazing... but there were a lot of mixed feelings and there was a moment I had to get out of the room we were in, and be alone. I was jealous of her. She was almost all I wanted to be, without any fear, she was free. I learned to repress myself, to be super self conscious and control every movement of my body and voice so that no one can judge me. Now I am in that process of getting out of the box and reaching the light. Just like in this short most of us are sleeping most of the time, and just like the way their head is pressed down we are limited and not functioning in our natural capacity. But no one will come from up there to pick you up. It's your decision! You have to rise, once you've realized you had enough and made your decision to get out of the dream.

Notice who the main character in this short film is! All the comments below focus on the kid that got out, but the main character _isn't_ him; it's the one in the middle of the 7x7 box, the one who is directly under the light, the one the film starts with. Most of the film is a flashback explaining why he was having "nightmares" in the beginning. The main message _isn't_ about how society tried and failed to suppress the individuality of the kid that got out--that's a old cliché. Rather, it's about how the main character, who represents most of us in society, was ultimately influenced by that kid despite being initially annoyed at him. In a way, the kid that got out was luckier than the others both in terms of disposition and circumstance--like how everyone laughing at him provoked him to remember his identity before the hole closed--but the film suggests that there is _hope_ for the others in that they might eventually be inspired to break free as well. The post-credits scene then shows that it's not just our main character, but others in the box as well who have been influenced. One might even infer that his simple-mindedness (he's the one who never knows when to stop) gives him fewer barriers towards achieving self-actualization.
