The border buses: New York City’s migrant crisis | States of America

Over 20,000 migrants have arrived in New York City by bus in the past six months, and the city is at a tipping point. While the narrative in the media focuses on the Republican governors, it turns out that the Democratic mayor of El Paso has sent more buses to New York than Governor Abbott. In partnership with the El Paso Times, reporter Lauren Villagran follows a young Venezuelan family as they travel by bus to New York City.

I feel sorry for these people but it's not the US job to help them. We can help some but not to the tune of millions. It's ridiculous. The most effective way for the US to help Venezuelans is by lifting the trade sanction not by giving them free accommodation here. And dictate other countries like the EU, the UK, Canada to lift that sanction as well. There is no economic recovery until the sanction is lifted

They get minimum wage jobs but for example they will live like in a 3 bedroom house and each room has a family renting in it, kids and all. So their rent will be cheaper. We even rent out the living room sometimes and garages too. I grew up poor and Hispanic and growing up knew many others as well living like this. There’s lack of privacy but that’s how we survive.

The correct way is wait seven years to process paperwork then if you turned 18 you fall into another category of wait times. There is a wait time list for each country on the internet. If a parent did the paperwork and six years passes and parent dies start over. There dosn't to be much thought going into making these laws some going back to the 1800's

In downtown NYC the small children (under 5 years old) run all over the place while their mothers stand in a circle talking. NO EFFORT at all is made to control their kids, to watch or instruct them on how to behave. This, in an area where education & socialization are of prime importance. He died, now Maduro, his driver, a man with no education, is worse. The embargo means nothing. The country is rich in resources that they can use to progress, but he doesn't know how to govern right. They don't need the US, they need to go back, and fight for their country. I remember speaking with a Venezuelan years ago online. He criticized the US, loved Chavez, and thought Venezuela was the best, and that the US was evil, because it was capitalist. Now, I wonder if he is one of these migrants...now capitalism doesn't sound so bad.🤔

@@oliviawilliams531 are you truly serious? I'm confused. It sounds like you're a democrat and don't like seeing illegals end up on the streets, like almost anyone in the US can be as well, so the president should enact a law that would require a person that owns a house or apt etc. to let illegals live in a room in their house and have meals and shower's and privacy probably clothing and shoes and etc etc. Did I read this correctly? I guess that means that I should be renting 2 of my bedrooms, oops, no no Melody, no rent being paid but having to basically be their parents because they don't have money. I'm 38, disabled due to a machine that literally chewed half of my left arm and hand 7 years ago and I not only have had multiple surgeries that literally was torn apart more so it could cover my wounds. I'm on a ton of meds for pain and nerve pain is just horrible and my left thigh that was torn apart from inside my groin to my knee cap, is my pancake thigh because half of it's muscle is now in my arm. Tons and tons of people that can hurt themselves and not be covered by worker's comp like I have, can instantly be kicked out and either live in a box or die in a box. So if you're really ok taking in a random migrant, if the law states it, would you be ok with them being injured and all of the help they'd need? I'm not for it.

My fiancee would be an educator here, my stepdaughter a recent Emmy winner at the regional level and both would become US Taxpayers and productive members of society, but instead, we are slowly going broke maintaining our two households in South Africa and Phoenix. This situation makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. 18:25 They left out that the Venezuelan migrant arguing with the security guard did not want to get up and leave the shelter for the day. Everyone is supposed to leave the shelter at a certain time, an employee came to wake him up and when he became belligerent and abusive and refused to get up the security guard was called. Instead of following the rules, making up his bed and leaving as he was asked he acted like a fool. The other guy complaining about the shelter beds being set up like a prison should be grateful he was given a bed, did he expect a room at The Plaza Hotel? There are many families and individuals living on the streets, in their car or going from place to place cause they have nowhere to live. If they were giving beds to sleep on they wouldn't be complaining. They come here with nothing to offer expecting to be taken care of and on top of that they complain and make demands of a country that has no obligation to them. These people are the lowest of the low from Venezuela, they act like this every where they go, that's why they have been run out of every single country in Latin America, no one wants them. In conclusion, I have never seen so much impudence and ungratefulness from a group of people in my life! No wonder the border was closed to them.

Born and raised in the usa. I am at poverty level already. Finding it harder and harder to make a living while there is so many illegal immagrants taking jobs for cash under the table and sending it back to their families in their country. The fact is tax payers can not afford to take care of these families. I have a job. I've worked all my life. Even as a child I would go to neighbors and ask if they needed any yard work done or help around the house. I believe the solution starts with the country that they are from. What are we doing for those that are homeless on our own streets. Our government can't even resolve that situation. How are we suppose to take in any and all that want to come here whether they are legal or not. Our people here are dying on the streets from starvation, no shelter, hypothermia, crime and drug addiction because we also don't have the money to offer free rehabilitation to those who desire it.

I’m only seeing those interviewed just explaining a desire to work or not making enough money so they came. This is not in line for a legitimate asylum claim. It’s awful but we can’t take them all and for the reasons they’re saying they came will end in them being sent back as they don’t meet the requirements. Even if they stay imagine they have little to no skills or education so there’s no way they can support themselves here especially when it wasn’t working before. None of them have any money as it is. They will be dependents and burdens to the states.

We shouldn't. But the current Democratic Party is dead set on opening our borders to migrants. What we are seeing now is partisanship at its worst. Securing the border is toxic to the Democrats, because it has Trump's fingerprints on it. And the reverse is also true--Republicans will reject something because it has Democrat fingerprints. It hasn't always been this way. I'm old enough to remember a time when the two parties were able to work together. I wish now that we could just get rid of political parties. But I don't think we can.

Poor as church mice but pumping out kids like rabbits. You can't afford to feed yourself, don't pump out a dozen kids, cross the border and expect our tax dollars to take care of your poor choices. So sick and tired of the media pushing photos of little kids in my face. Give them birth control. It's not up to me to raise their kids, nor is it any other taxpayer here.

The mayor should run a ad asking residents to adopt a family or single person and show your sanctuary city what’s able to do for another human being even if the city is willing to help with the expenses until these people get settled

You come to an English speaking country and then you want to complain about discrimination because you can’t speak the language?
