    "People would rather be unhappy than uncertain" - I've been thinking about this a lot and I definitely agree. However, it is important to acknowledge the level of privilege that comes with choosing uncertainty over "unhappiness"(assuming it means being stuck in job that just pays the bills). Unhappiness can be tied to a more stable lifestyle- albeit mundane. But it sometimes means a roof over your head, being able to pay the bills, being able to feed your kids, and knowing that you will pull through in a medical emergency. "Risking it all and seeing what happens" doesn't always come from courage, but also safety nets, whether it be your parents, your savings...or your parents' savings. If you are starting from scratch and you have dependents (whether it be your parents like in the case of South Asian culture or your kids), uncertainty may often not be a choice. Saying that as a fresh college graduate with dependents. Anyway, just offering my perspective, otherwise great video Ali!

    I thought exactly this when he was talking. Risking everything when you're 23 and don't own much, don't have dependents is very different from risking everything when you're 43, with a family and whole bunch of commitments that you can lose. Not impossible, but much, much riskier.

  • @patriciam6184

    @patriciam6184

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@jackiedelvalle Exactly!! When you have a family and commitments, sometimes taking that risk doesn't mean you're the only one who has to deal with the consequences. If your dependents don't consent to the risk, it's unfair to go and take the risk anyway and have them deal with the consequences just because you wanted to.

What's worse is everyone else in this comment section doesn't seem to have a problem with it hahaha :( I know Ali probably didn't mean to offend, but it's disappointing really that he can explicitly say the words "take advantage" of the difference between the developing and developed world without batting an eye. Corporations already take advantage of this, but I'd hope that individuals who would benefit massively from the labor of someone from my country would have empathy to pay them what they deserve, not just what they can get away with.

I'm glad you're passionate and determined to work hard but you also have to think about for example someone like Steve Jobs right, built one of THE best companies in the world with a cult following and died of cancer at age 56? “Instead of thinking about what makes us happy, think about what makes you excited.” - that sounds like awesome advice. Have actually read 4 hour workweek (and subsequently forgot a lot of it) but really appreciated this, as it’s been a long time so having this sort of high level summary is actually really useful. Significantly better than Blinkist! Good luck for your book mate.

    I am SHOOK that this is the book that most changed your life. While some of the concepts are decent, overall I thought it was overhyped, and his practical advice on how to accomplish the "new rich" lifestyle is already pretty much obsolete. But that is the beauty of books, something in it obviously resonated with you and triggered some powerful growth. On a side note, I inadvertently got someone fired because of this book. I think I may make a video about it because you and Daniel Inskeep both mentioned this in your videos in the last week and it would make for a pretty good video.
