The Bone Wars: A Feud That Rocked U.S. Paleontology

The Bone Wars resulted in the description of some of the most famous dinosaurs we know of today, but not without some pretty big mistakes.

Brontosaurus is (probably) back to being a valid genus again. The two species originally named (Apatosaurus ajax and Brontosaurus excelsus) are likely different enough to warrant separation, but as genera are arbitrary its perfectly ok to lump them together (at least until someone shows they're not each other's closest relative).More importantly neither Marsh nor Cope ever had a skull. It wasn't found until 1903 after both of them were dead, and it wasn't confirmed to be from an Apatosaur until the 1970s. There's a reason the AMNH used Camarasaurus as the model for its Brontosaurus mount (and the fact that it used the name likely had a lot to do with why "Brontosaurus" made it into the popular culture and stuck.)

The cooperation and collaboration among scientists today is inspiring to me. The more information gets passed between bright minds, the better our understanding of the world around us will increase. I wish governments could get along so well. Hell, I wish members within governments could cooperate. If they could, even a little, think of how much better life would be.

Brontosaurus is generally considered valid again. While its true that Brontosaurus was considered dubious for a long time and a synonym to Apatosaurus, a study in 2015 suggests its a separate genus.

Apatosaurus and brontosaurus are the same thing, called apatosaurus now. Species is the bottom line. There are many species of sauropods, but the examples stated here are recognized as apatosaurus. Genus is above species in the tree. Meaning there may be variations below that, but not above. Apatosaurus is a thing, brontosaurus is a mistake, but only by chronologic discovery. Same ANIMAL. No harm no foul, Marshist or Coneyist. Same critter

No, they're not the same animal. Apatosaurus ajax and Brontosaurus excelsus are different (hence being different species), and Tschopp et al., 2015 make a pretty good case for regarding them as being different enough to warrant being put into different genera (iirc they're as different as Barosaurus and Diplodocus for example, and nobody lumps them together).

Most people who aren't that familiar with the sciences don't realize that many academics are really very petty and childish, and care more about their own reputations than anything else. This is especially true in archaeology, where scientists who propose new hypotheses that challenge the accepted orthodoxy are attacked in every way imaginable, including lies, slander, and attempts to have them fired. This often causes researchers to suppress their own discoveries out of fear.

So many sources say it was the brontosaurus that had the camarasaurus skull. It seems people find it a better story that nobody uses that name because it was given to a sham skeleton. By the sounds of it, the rules of precedent meant that having part of the new dinosaur was enough to make the name stick for apatosaurus, even though it was shoddily reconstructed. The rules of taxonomic precedent lead to pretty weird results, hence whales being called "basilisaurus" (which implies it's a lizard) and monkeys being called "apidium" (which implies it's a bovine). It's funny that people get this backwards. Are they worried that it'll make the discipline look bad to have to explain that you could fudge up a reconstruction and still have your name stick as per precedent rules? If there's no way to explain this without making it sound dumb, maybe the rule is dumb, and ought to be changed to be less so. It seems to encourage this kind of rushed research.

This video is 3 years old, but the fact you guys get this outright and brazenly _wrong_ is enough to make it worth writing this. _Brontosaurus excelsus_ wasn't described as a seperate species based upon the skull. Marsh had come to the conclusion that _Brontosaurus_ was a different genus from _Apatosaurus_ before they even found any skull, and it wouldn't even have mattered about the skull because, as you yourselves mention, there was no _Apatosaurus_ skull. It was identified as seperate primarily due to the condition of the scapula, sacrum, and sacral vertebrae, and had nothing to do with the skull. And, while the later information based upon the supposed skull was proven wrong, that did nothing in and of itself to disprove _Brontosaurus_ from being different, because it very much _was_ different. The factor which caused Riggs to unify the two genus was due to the fact that the _Apatosaurus_ specimen was a juvenile, but would (according to Riggs) have grown into the form represented in the adult by _Brontosaurus,_ as Riggs states in the very publication used to justify unifying the two genus. You guys want to ignore the 2015 survey regarding _Brontosaurus,_ or just consider it incorrect in its conclusions? Fine, it's fair to doubt the results of singular studies. But if you want to talk crap about Marsh, maybe you should do your research _properly_ and look at the original papers.

I once heard the story that Coprolite, petrified dinosaur dung, was given it's name by a rival palaentologist. He named it after a man he disliked in the same field.Could this be part of this story as well?

"so you see these two rich guys came from rich families, they started competing with each other, and eventually destroyed priceless resources in their bitter and pointless feud that left the field in shambles" Yeah that sounds like rich kid scientists and legacy grads.

I guess this is what happens when you mix ego's into science. Everyone's all for recognition and money rather than science. Also, as for sharing information and working together. countries back in the day to include the medieval times and beyond, have kept scientific secrets from each other (the most relevant case I can think of would be the prism and light discoveries in astrology or something). Even today, we have had a lot of results and improvements due to all the nuclear testing that we have done in secret. Or we can do Unit 731. Everyone in the world wanted to know what was conducted there by the Japanese because no one else dare risk to commit acts of inhumane experiments.

SR Foxley, or should I say President, what would I have to do to get citizenship in space?

Well, since space technically fills the entirety of the known universe, and you are already presumably somewhere within the known universe-- you're already a citizen! Huzzah!

You're welcome! But really-- I think the rest of the patreon supporters deserve a lot more credit than I do (who in total contribute a lot more than me each month), as well as the awesome Scishow crew who do the hard work to put together this great content!
