The Bone Caves Circuit | Inchnadamph | Assynt

The Bone Caves
A century ago, Inchnadamph Bone Caves were the site of a remarkable discovery. While surveying the geology of the North-west Highlands, two men stumbled across two caves filled with animal bones. We now realise that these bones are the most complete record of the last glacial period found in Scotland. Species discovered here include Arctic fox, wolf, lynx, brown bear and even Polar bear.
Stop to look at the river in front of you. Most of the water doesn’t flow from higher up the valley as you might expect - instead, it is appearing from beneath your feet, at the base of the limestone crag. This is a major spring, the Fuaran Allt nan Uamh. The limestone in this area is so permeable that the water flows through it in a series of caves and fissures, only appearing at the surface at a few points. The water emerging here entered the underground system about a kilometre higher up this valley.

You missed the hole in the ground next to Bone Caves. Pass Bone Caves, keep left, you'll hear sound of nearby waterfall, just before it you'll find a hole in the ground, that will lead you to chamber where waterfall drops into small lake, take left, on your knees crawl another 200m, it will lead you to another chamber with old wagoons and mining remains. Only for people taking risk as it's easy to get stuck in narrow corridors.

The wagons were made by the people of the Grampian Speleological Group for digging out the end of the cave, I've spent a good few hours with a trowel at the end of the cave filling the wagons to haul the spoils out. It's been about 30 years since I was last there digging at the end of ANUS cave

Part of the biggest cave system in Scotland ,instead of going up to the bones caves stay on the path to the left and you come to the anus cave ( it's an acronym) you can descend easily and spend an hour or so exploring underground there is a crawl into an area called the far side .also in the same area is a small cave where they found the bones of a mother bear and it's cub ,killed when the roof collapsed thousands of years ago. Up above the bone caves is the biggest cave ,need some experience for this one , they say you could fit the Usher hall ( Edinburgh ) into it !

My first exercise with the Scottish Cave Rescue Organisation was in Umah an Claonaite, was a very long day and the poor "victim" had to be rushed to the surface half way through the exercise as he was getting under cooled. It is still one of my best memories as it was my first descent into Claonaite and the cooperation needed to get the stretcher back to the surface. Hard to believe it was more than 30 years ago, time has flown past since.
