The changelogs for 1.18.8 state that hot water will now cool when taken away from hot springs (oh the timing). This will now likely have to be built on site, which is a bit more dangerous. I'll be doing further testing and provide an update soon!
Tired of your weapons wearing down trying to contend with wolves, bears, and temporal storms? Save your steel and wash your problems away with the power of hot water!
This is build is compatible with the current version 1.18.7 and will be updated if anything is affected in future updates.

**UPDATE** The change logs for 1.18.8 state that hot water will now cool when taken away from hot springs in a bucket (oh the timing). As of 1.18.8, this will likely have to be built on site, which is a bit more dangerous and a bit less convenient if you've already established a base elsewhere. As with all in-development games, things like this are to be expected. I expect that if you build this design in 1.18.7 it should continue to work in 1.18.8 so long as you never remove the hot water source blocks. Once you've updated to 1.18.8, however, a new on-location design that does not require a bucket will be required. As of August 10, 2023 a Boiler Room V2 is in the works and a video for it will be out when testing is complete. I imagine as the development path for the game is looking to include more environmental challenges (including hot and cold), that there will be more changes in the future, and an ever-evolving design to accommodate for new challenges. Niclas, developer of the BetterRuins mod, plans to add the Hot Water Bucket functionality back in a modpack to keep this version of the Boiler Room viable. I'll add a link to the mod when it becomes available! -------- Thank you all so much for the community feedback, it really means a lot! Alongside updates to the Boiler Room, I currently have two scripted series in the works for Vintage Story. Given the amount of set design and pre-production required, these may take a little bit to get rolling into a steady upload schedule as I navigate around work and other obligations, but I hope you will all enjoy them when they're ready. I have already uploaded a short that teases the first of the two series, titled 'Temporal Institute'! It aims to be one part introduction to the main aspects of the game, and one part internal narrative with secrets and its own lore baked in. The second series will be entirely story focused, with more details to come as it develops!

Adding to this, if you pick up the boiling water before the update, you can still place it, once. The change only affects picking up the water, so you can make a stash of buckets before upgrading. Or revert the change, with about the most basic mod or tweak you can make, as you only have to change "waterportion" to "boilingwaterportion" in line 45 of assets/survival/blocktypes/liquid/boilingwater.json
You're definitely a pioneer in this sort of content for vintage story! High quality entertaining tutorials like these are what keeps people engaged in the game, and if this video does well we'll definitely see more people put this much effort into their own tutorials.

@@Solstin Well, I come from a very long background of building in Minecraft and have recently moved to this game because of the infinite possibilities brough on by the chiseling mechanic, so I learn more towards the build centric creative content. But frankly any sort of quality engaging VS content like this scratches that itch, you know? I personally had no idea you could even use hot water for anything, so tutorials like these spreading the knowledge are worth their weight (or kilobytes?) in gold.
@Solstin

@@mxxstro Chiseling is definitely a game-changer. I got partway through building my first actual base before realizing I didn't have to stick to using stairs and trapdoors to round off a corner, and it's been a delightfully rapid decent into madness ever since. I had gotten real deep into redstone and manipulating mechanics to be as optimized as possible back in Minecraft, so once I learned hot water was different from regular water the gears just started spinning! One day I might make a Minecraft video for the nearly fully-automatic villager zombification and curing assembly line I designed, but for now I think Vintage Story is dominating a good chunk of my time.
Excellent guide, and excellent design! I haven't had a chance to tinker around with hot water yet, but I'll bet this design works really well. For the chiseling part, having the QPTech Chisel Tools mod would probably help a ton with planing down those blocks into thin slabs! ;)

What a nice surprise, a well-made old-school tutorial like the ones I used to watch back when I was getting into that other block game. I'm enjoying repeating this cycle with Vintage Story, slowly getting more familiar with the game and learning tricks like such a grinder. If I wanted to use this in 1.17 with regular water and use it as a non-boiling grinder, would I just have to remove the fences? Or would I have to adjust the chiseling as well?
@Solstin
6 ай бұрын
Just removing the fences so you can stab with spears through the chiselled holes would work out pretty well. You could theoretically add an additional slot on the upper chiselled block for easier stabbing, just be sure not to make it too large or drifters might be able to throw stones through the hole!

Just like the other block game you can use inverted horizontal slabs to prevent spawning, drifters don't spawn on non-solid blocks.
@Solstin

Under normal conditions that's true, but during temporal storms there is a lot narrower of a range of things that can prevent spawning. Even when placing items on the floor, some don't prevent spawns during temporal storms. For example, lanterns, strangely enough, still allow drifters to spawn on top of them only during temporal storms!

It's a bit of a blend of the voice I typically use for my D&D characters but with a dash of a Deckard Cain impression lol It's mostly muscle memory at this point but the best I can describe it is to lower my pitch until it resonates in my chest, make it a bit gravelly with the back of my throat, and then just speak and adjust if I'm holding tension anywhere until it comes out sounding right! The only time I'd tend to do any sort of voice editing would be if I need a robotic filter or something else that can't be done with my voice!
great design would have been good seeing it in operation tho

In the video for the second version of the boiler room I made sure to do a practical demonstration! This first version is now unfortunately only able to be made on either a 1.18.7 or earlier world, or with the help of mods that restore the ability to carry hot water in buckets without it cooling into regular water. I will have to make a version 3 to address the changes from 1.19.3 and 1.19.4 as now stones don't stop drifter spawning and creatures will try to avoid pathing into hot water.
According to the changelog, boiling water is no longer transportable in the newest 1.18.8 version. If you try to transport it with a bucket, it will just turn into normal water.

@Solstin

Ahh, you'll probably want to use rocks for spawnproofing. During temporal storms specifically, a lot of other methods of spawnproofing just don't work. That being said, I've had a couple spawn from time to time even with rocks on the ground, so maybe the ceiling being more than 2 blocks tall can let them spawn midair occasionally.
I happen to know where some hotspring water is! I"m totally gonna do that! I do hope i can still collect it and it stays hot though! since it's a few KM from home! Aaaand just read the addendum about the updated hot water mechanics....and huffs. "yeaaah, I was thinking that was something I heard about...bugger. but maybe with chiseling, I can make it so there's a spear slit for stabby stabby at drifter feets. would be fun if there were pungi sticks!

You've got a couple different options! I made a secondary design for 1.18.8 that's built on site at a hot spring, but you can also downgrade to 1.18.7 long enough to collect a whole bunch of hot water before re-updating afterward. The update only changed the pickup process, so any existing buckets or sources placed will remain hot.
