The BMW E28 M5 is the Best M5 Ever Made - ISSIMI Presents BTS with DTS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The E28 M5 simultaneously started the M5 dynasty which survives to this day and also inspired a renaissance of high performance sedans from other manufacturers. Each subsequent generation of M5 has gotten faster yes, but also softer: more sedan and less sport. In this video, Derek Tam-Scott explores the origins of the first ever M5, from the creation of BMW’s Motorsport division in the 1970s as a racing arm to run the CS, CSL and M1, to the debut of the first 5 series at the same time, the E12. He also drives the E28 M5 and discovers its dual personality. The average driver could use one of these cars for years without discovering that its limit behavior has a sporting purity that is engaging in a way that few modern cars achieve, sports or otherwise.

About ISSIMI
The niche, $30b industry of collectable and low-production cars has seen little innovation in the past several decades. It’s one that lacked transparency, dependent on traditional dealers, brokers, and auction houses with unnecessarily high fees.
We’re setting out to change that.
We believe our technological and operational excellence can decrease costs while increasing transparency into car quality, building trust between collectors. Give us a shot, and shop rare cars anywhere in the world from the comfort of your own home.

I was privileged to have owned one of these from new in 1988 and have regretted selling it for over 30 years. The best car I ever owned, period. Mine was the only North American M5 with factory rear headrests, which were special ordered thru Zipper BMW of Beverly Hills.

I bought 1987 535is from zipper BMW cosmos black with black interior and installed rear headrests. Drove 120,000 miles, 12 years. It was daily driver through Mulholland drive/Benedict canyon and weekly weekend drives to Lake Arrowhead. It was a brilliant involving drivers car. I miss driving it at the limits.

This makes me miss my E28 528e manual. It wasn't my first car, but it was the first car I could drive (the first was an E30 316i project). It was a barn find that sat around since the mid 2000s, with a torn up seat, 360,000 kilometers, amd a bad idle control valve. The seats were trashed, it was on old tires, and it had a few dings in the hood. But...I absolutely loved it. The colour combo was brown over tan cloth, that 5 speed was sloppy but also precise, and someone put a 535i limited slip differential in the back. It got great fuel economy, looked fantastic, and started (almost) every single time. $1100 got me that car, and it was always going to be an engine donor for the E30. I wish I still had it, or another E28 528e manual.

While I could argue that the E34 M5 is the most complete M5 as far as comfort, space, luxury (that the E28 lacks) and analog driver experience (same engine as E28), I would agree that if the primary metric is purely analog driving experience, the E28 is the winner.

Great video. My dad owned a 1983 533i black w/Gold BBS wheels. When he purchased it in 83 the salesman said it was the fastest four-door on the planet. Obviously two years before the M5. I only have 75,000 miles on it in 2010 When me gave it to me. Unfortunately I was deployed to Iraq. In the garage that was working on it for me got it towed while I was overseas. Great video bittersweet memories.

My '88 535is was the most neutral balanced four door vehicle I have ever driven. I had the car on the track at a BMWCCA driver's school in the mid-90's, and even the Instructor couldn't get the rear end to break loose on the skid pad! I wish I had the extra HP of the M5, as the power slide would have been really fun. I'll settle with my current 2000 M5. The last of the "analog" M5's, using a real clutch and very few electronics. I also wish I never sold my 1972 2002tii that I restored from bare metal to nearing SCCA ITB race ready. Expecting children had a way of changing ones priorities. 😞

At 7:26 is the South African Bmw 530mle homologation special production car that was indeed sold to the general public here and considered by some to be the first unofficial M car as we know them today. We tended to get the go ahead from Bmw Germany to build some unique performance models here. Maybe Bmw Germany were curious to see these unique cars built and didnt mind us building these cars quietly down at the tip of Africa. We also had the unofficial 'M7' in 1985 (210kw m1 engine) and the e30 m3s two long lost brothers here, the 333i and 325is evo which had the e30 m3 chassis and suspension but used a 2.7 six cylinder instead. Bmw Germany usually sent in their engineers and tuning contacts(eg.Alpina) to help with development.

+1 for E28 M5. I'm friends with a local collector who occasionally lets me drive his cars when we go to lunch. I drove his '87 911 and it was a go-kart that required work to drive it. Not amazing, just work. Tiring. Like I couldn't imagine spending two hours in it on a Saturday just enjoying the drive. A month later I drove his '87 M5. It stunned me how much better of a car it was than the 911. It stunned me how great a car it was even when compared to cars right now. Simple, a tight fit without being constricting, good power, fantastic suspension. The idea of 4-5 hour weekend destination drive didn't worry me at all. I'm a Japanese car guy: S2000, NSX, LC500. The Germans don't interest me much. But BMW got the E28 M5 perfectly right. Kudos, from a person otherwise predisposed to not be a fan.

The E28 M5, and the E30 M3 really represent the peak of BMW and were truly the Ultimate Driving Machines and BMW has never built any cars since that can compare. I have now seen a few of the presenters videos and he does a great job. I have owned 3 CS coupes, an E12 I still have, an E32, and still have an E30 M3. I have driven many of BMW's newer offerings and they are not in any way comparable. They got lost along the way to becoming a major company with way too high volume production. Not sure he said this and everyone probably knows, but the M5 was created for a BMW executive who had the great idea of sticking the M88 into a 5 series. Admittedly the S38 rather than the M1's motor. It was just so sweet and such a great drive that they decided to produce it in limited numbers.

Great video as alway from TH-S, the M5 is awesome but have you ever driven a Maserati 430? Were they even sold in the US? A good one is rare as rocking horse shit but if you find one they are up there with the E28 M5.

I will never forget a BMW AC Schnitzer E 30 I saw while living in England I think it was from the late eighties which had that M5/M6 engine in it and with fender flares/very wide wheels/tires and large front/rear spoilers made the original E30 M3 look totally inadequate! I wonder if it was a one-off or if they made a series of cars like that because I never saw another one again!

The E28 M5 is my favourite version of the M5. I think it has the most character and also the purest to drive.

Awesome video. I love the E28 M5 and the history behind it. The only thing that I can't stand is the North American front bumper. It looks like it belongs on an E30 3 Series (nothing wrong with E30's, just don't put it's front end on an E28). Check out the European and Australian E28 M5's. That's what they should look like. PS- nothing wrong with this video or the E28 M5, I'm just saying that I don't like the front end of the North American E28

I drove the e24 m635csi with the right engine, the m88. Car was in pristine condition with new bilstein shocks and the whole works. But these days its not a race car by any means. It looks nice, but the 2005 m5 will leave it completely in the dust. On the other hand, people pay top dollar for these so it must be the nostalgic value.
