Belushi and Akyroyd were the only two who weren't professional musicians. The rest of the band was composed of well-known studio musicians such as Paul Shaffer (later known as the leader of Letterman's house band), along with Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn who played for Booker T and the MG's on numerous sides for Stax Records. This was no bunch of dilettantes horsing around; Aykroyd was a student of classic blues music and made Belushi a blues fan as well. This was a labor of love for Dan Aykroyd.
