As an accomplished musician, her sense of rhythm and structure should be as good as any story teller. Furthermore, she knows her craft well so the content she put out has depth and interesting. There you go, the result being good is quite unavoidable.

Poor analogy. Neo never knew how to fight let alone kung fu. The owner of this channel is already an established musician. Also, Neo was plugged into the Matrix and thus unconscious in the real world as he learned the martial arts. The owner of this channel was fully conscious as she consciously learned the blues by listening to it in her full consciousness; a stark difference. Also, Neo's learning was through a single session of 'downloading' different types of martial arts, presumably in hours. The owner of this channel was acclimated to the blues through a period of several days, if not weeks. Lastly, the owner of this channel never said, 'I know the Blues'. I doubt that she will produce a Blues recording any time soon or perform Blues in a live setting professionally. Neo however applied what he learned to rescue mankind. Try again sister.

I can't express how fantastic this is. Being a musician at heart is an everlasting journey of discovery. It soothes your soul to play. Seeing her smile at the licks of the great master Oscar P makes me smile. She's discovering a new way in the moment as she transcribes and gets it under her fingers. This should be a good lesson for those people who shun theory. When you understand the language you can converse about anything. I just love music and playing so much. There is just infinite exploration and discovery. The Lord is amazing.

WTH!? 4:08 you nailed these accents and groove perfectly! If I was told you were a jazz pianist, I would say 110% yes. Your piece is very interesting, thank you so much for this, I know just how much work got into preparing, shooting and editing such a video. Keep it up, and definitely a happy new subscriber :) Cheers! EDIT: BTW I bet that with 91k subs, you're used to negative feedback but I wouldn't take these as such. It's true that jazz and blues are all about the feel, even if you play only one note, but technicality matters too. Ask Oscar Peterson or McCoy Tyner... Make that -- educational. As a non-musician I'm going to be interested in whether it winds up revealed that jazz definitely has something against the downbeat.

I Just found your channel via wired and I am very happy I did. You have a ability to help people appreciate music in a different way. As someone with dyslexia it can be hard to follow basic patterns but you have a beautiful way of breaking things down that's genuinely helped me appreciate music more. To tell you the truth, both versions of the keyboard piece in the mall sounded more like funk than straight blues; that chord progression is, in all fairness, just one example of the many things that can be done with the Blues scales. They really are the basis for the vast majority of popular music today, and we don't credit those pioneers of the Blues enough.

I love your plane based upon elements of Blues. However, it is important when playing Blues to keep it simple. It is far more three chords and a pentatonic melodic scale. Most importantly, it is a Feeling. Most jazz players are not good at playing Blues. They create what we call Jazz so jazz is often embedded Within Blues tradition, it has a very different feeling from blues.

No umbrella on rainy day. Perfect time to write some blues.

I am just starting out with piano but have many years of musical experience and I love looking at these videos. I am inspired to be able to just improvise and adapt styles like you because that is truly amazing! Pure talent and musical genius!

I'm not a musician, classical or otherwise. But I started listening to music, seriously, through classical music. Then, my journey in music took a turn into jazz, blues, rock and roll, folk and other genres. I like that you, as a musician, are going through this journey to experiment and experience different genres. I'm somewhat well along to be able to distinquish between Mississippi blues versus Chicago, Memphis, and other regional blues. I always wondered whether classical composers would ever take on writing blues-type or jazz-type compositions (or rock music as well). For sure, Mozart and Beethoven would be all over it. Haydn would have a fit, as would most of the Bachs. Chopin would definitely be down with it, as would most other (non-Germanic) Romantic-era composers. The Russian composers might have a hard time acclimating themselves to the genre, but could eventually compose in that style. Keep on making new compositions and play them! We're in a dire need of new composers who aren't limited to 3 notes and the standard 4 chords.

Glad to hear a classical musician wants to learn the blues, just like that Crossroads movie. I believe you might want to learn Robben Ford's blues style also so that you may know the other dark side of the blues.

YES!!! Nahre, you killed this one. Blues is very much my musical language of choice, and for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience in this genre you nailed it. I love the pocket piece, so musical and original, while paying homage to the blues form as you see it. Side note, Red House by Jimi Hendrix is the reason I picked up a guitar. I remember where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard that song, it literally changed my life.

Hey, Rhett- - same thing for me and Jimi Hendrix. My buddy came back from England with an album of "Are You Experienced?" before it was released in the States. It literally changed my life, too. I went out to the music store on the highway, bought a cheap electric guitar and forced myself to learn how to play it. The British version of the album had Red House on it, which was what blew me away the most. Interestingly, the American release left out Red House. At that time, American record company executives still considered blues to be "race music", i.e., music suitable only for the "Negro market." So, they left the song out, thinking it might alienate white rock music buyers. Evidently, they were unaware that white American kids had already been exposed to blues through The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, and John Mayall, et al, and loved it.

I am a musician and prefer Hendrix's bluesier songs and playing to the other styles he played. :)

It's super cool when a classically trained musician applies those skills to more creative pop/rock/jazz genres.

AMAZING!!!! How it works from a clasical grow up (much technical and theorical) to the world of the improvisation and the passion.

You don't know how many times I watched the short part of you playing Oscar. Brought on a few tears. This is the holy grail of piano jazz. I'd love to see you do a transcribed or your own transcription of him. Keep going! It's such an amazing sound, the syncopation and accents bring it to life. Blues are blues, but there isn't enough chords in blues that hold my interest to long :) But Oscar or Tatum? Wow!

I've playing around with the blues scales for a bit now. The best part of it is that it's hella fun to improvise.

This was really interesting to watch, and a very different take on blues music. It felt cerebral where the blues is, to me, almost entirely visceral. When I play my best blues, and when it’s most fun to listen to, is when it is something you feel entirely and don’t even have to think about. I hope you got a lot out of your listening experience. but Mixolydian contains natural 6? could you please clarify. i love the sharp 5 / flat 6 dominant 7th chord on a blues turn around, if that is what you mean? or do you mean combining that with another chord built on the flat 7?

Jibicus Maximus what I meant was that little bit of modal interchange with aeolian. You could also use the Mixolydian b6 scale altogether, but to just borrow the bVI chord also works. And this technique can work in major, too. In this case, it is the Ab-Bb-C sequence (which I forgot to mention, that's why I'm editing). It has the same feel as the Abmaj7-Cmin/Bb-C7 used since all the chords have the same function.

oh i see, hmm i have quite a limmited view of what blues is i guess, to me it a 1, 4, 5. i don't like it much more complex, i like to use Major and Minor Pentaonic, Dorian, mixolydian i guess but i don't think of it like that, usualy Minor third is a gace note to get to the Major third, it's an ambigious scale or note pool, ithere are other ways of interpreting it too, i heard it called the super blues scale once, basically 1, 2, b3, 3, 4, b5, 5, 6, b7, you could say it's blues scale with the Major third, which is common but then i could use the 2nd and 6th too for flavour notes, i would also use microtonal quarter tone bend on the Minor third and b 7th, jazzier blues is obviously more harmonically varried, jazz musicians express them self with note choice is my point, but i like to use subtle nuances and stuff with a limmited note pool, i love the progression you mentioned btw, the stairway to heaven type thing eh.

At last someone mentions the accents in Oscar Peterson's playing! (rather than generic statements about superior technique...) To me his accents are one of the most defining (and difficult to emulate) elements of his style. Great work Nahre Sol, I like how your listening went from, say, Parker, to Led Zeppelin, Hendrix to the Electric Light Orchestra to Junior Wells etc great variety and inclusiveness! And I am so impressed that you sat down and transcribed C Jam Blues, given you are not a Blues/Jazz player! And closing the video with real ambient sound while driving home in the rain - that was poetry! :)

you are a little genius my girl. Enjoy your talent and keep it up. Im a rock composer who dabbles in classical.... Creativity is a wonderful contribution to humanity. Some folks can take a 6-string guitar and create true beauty with 2 chords. What a mystery this all is!!

I like that Rhodes sound you use. and your groove sounds more like a modern interpretation than traditional shuffle, that;s very cool! I grew up learning the minor blues scale as an option to play over tunes, never knew about the major blues scale. It seems similar to a pentatonic scale with a minor 3rd added.

You can use them both at the same time! I use this blues scale (let's call it C) C-D-Eb-E-F-Gb-G-A#-Bb-B-C Use the major 7 degree sparingly and chromatically. Basically I just play any note that isn't a b2 or a b6

b2 works over the five chord, it functions as five chords b fifth hinting at a blues scale built on that chord, in this case, G, i only use it as a quick flick though, i stole the idea from Stevie Ray Vaughan, the amazing texas blues guitarist.

I've heard stevie do it too, but I haven't made it work with my sound. Avoiding the b2 and b6 gives you that swing/blues major/minor sound. The b2 is just a bit too minor for my taste.

She sounds really good! Because of her extensive knowledge in music, it's probably easy for her to duplicate or imitate some established blues artists. To really "play" the blues, an artist has to live or experience the blues. The blues is how a person feels translated through an instrument or instruments.
