I started making music a couple days ago. I wanted to start doing that for a while but I was intimidated at the ton of things I'd have to learn. I'm a complete begginer, I know very little about soft and hardware, music theory, the only thing I have is my passion and love for music and sound in general. But this video was still really accessible (especially because of the chord/word comparison) and I won't fall into that trap ! Thank you !

Yeah same, really just for now I want to just make remixes of songs and then make actual original music. I’m not sure if this is just a thing musicians have but I’ve been trying to get my ideas in my head onto my computer but I don’t know really anything about music theory so it’s difficult. @@Azurethewolf168I’ve been producing and composing for a few years and I’m studying composition in school, and the general consensus even from professors that have doctorates is that what you make will never sound exactly like what’s in your head. You can try and get close, but it’ll always be different somehow. My advice is to embrace it and go where the song takes you, not where you want it to go. Also try learning basic music theory, it’s actually really simple and you can find good videos on KZread about it. Hope that helped :)

im a digital artist and i recently started teaching myself some basic music stuff and the way it seems to me is that music theory and chords are a bit like color theory and color schemes. its important to know the theory, but that theoretical knowledge can be figured out by trial and error as much as it can be traditionally learned. what sounds good/ what colors look good is something that you can learn properly and more efficiently, but you can also just guess by basically vibes which colors/notes might work well together and then learn from what actually sounds/looks good.

I find it fascinating how visual art can be compared to music. The colors are literally harmony and contour is literally melody. The word color is frequently used in music.
@lonnyhandwork422
Жыл бұрын
I do some digital art as well and your comparison has some validity. That said, one of the most import aspects of music theory is that it is the language most musicians use to communicate with one another. You can get by without it but it’s an almost essential tool in a lot of instances.
I collaborated with a young producer once who has produced a couple of songs already and I was just starting. The only difference was I have been learning music theory since I was 14. I was blown away to find out how this young producer does not have an ounce of idea on how chord progression came to be in the first place. He was clueless on what a major and a minor progression is about and when I told him, we are gonna use Key of G, I-V-IV modulating up half step for the Outro and will end in G#, he looked at me as if I am speaking an alien language or maybe Klingon.
The man was very sad with the woman when the woman said she did not want to marry the man. He said “this is the kind of thing that makes me cry” and the woman said “I’m sorry for making you cry”. Then the man got sadder and began to walk away down the road that had trees on it. The woman was sad by this and she said the man “please do not walk away. I still love you”. The man was happy that the woman said “I love you” but was sad about the her saying no when he waInted to maUrry her. He decided it wasn’t good and he wanted to keep walking so he did. The woman began to cry about this. Novel of the fucking century. Blows me away

That you don’t need to invest in studio equipment or spend HOURS creating the perfect chord if you buy his chord pack. And judging for the comments it’s not only young and inexperienced people that fall for it, but even people in their 60’s.
This is honestly one of the most well-crafted videos on KZread. It's funny, witty, charming, and exposes a pretty shitty company on top of it all. Good video. Keep this shit up man.
I hate how people mystify music theory, or act like it's some sort of arbitrary set of laws. It's just a tool to look at music through, literally a form of literacy that learning can help you better conceptualize why the things you hear sound the way they do, and a framework you CAN CHOOSE to use when making music. But I suppose the idea of 'evil cabal of musigicians' is appealing to people who want to rage about not knowing stuff.
@luviana_

Yeah. I've constructed all of my music with the knowledge of literally just the piano roll in LMMS because that's almost the only thing I've ever used. Then they had random people say how intervals totally ruined their learning experience. They instead offered their method which ofc was "scientifically proven" to be the best method for ear training. And ofc nowhere in the ad did they say what their method actually was. Do people still fall for this stupid advertising?

The "pro vowels" bit is a perfect analogy. Yes, music theory isn't essential to write music. But without any theory knowledge, you wouldn't know that you're essentially paying to use letters.
@fcf8269
2 жыл бұрын
You would be surprised by how many great musicians wrote songs that went to the top of the charts without knowing a single line of music theory. Did they use pre-made packs? Nope... They sat down with their instrument or sampler, and tried things until something made "sense" for them musically speaking. They could have learned theory and cut the time needed for exploration, but that would kill their creativity because knowing theory they would never try something they were told "won't work"; and that means no innovation would ever happen.

@@fcf8269 disagree with this take. Knowing theory isn't gonna stop experimentation. If anything, knowing what's "expected" or "common" often leads people to try new things out *because* it's not what's expected. I really don't see why people are so averse to learning about the things they're into. Learning music theory isn't so much about learning "rules that must be followed", as much as it is learning about how to identify and describe aspects of music in a concrete way.
@fcf8269
2 жыл бұрын
@@kohai-kun9261 I didn't exclude that theory can lead to breakthrough and innovation; but it is clear that most of the great things happening in music history were not only driven by knowledge, but at times by the lack of knowledge. When you know "something", you are setting yourself in a box with well defined walls; going outside these walls is something that our brain does implicitly; because we are used to accept some things as being true, and live and operate in the realm of what is true. If you would know nothing about physics, you could think about creative ways to explain what gravity is, because you can "feel it"; and yet you have no clue of the theory behind it. For music you can't follow the same process because it is not something you feel and there is room for getting it right in different ways. Music either sound good or not, and that is what theory teach you. Once you are bound to those rules that make music sound good, you follow them and avoid to go out of that path. Learning is not wrong; nobody is against it; and the only ones against it are lazy people that do not want to put time in it, and just look for a way to get good at something or make money in the easy way. From my perspective you need a base of theory to do anything, but when you start to fill the voids on your own, you may end up in places that others have been already (so you wasted time, because you could read a book to learn it), but you may also end up in a different place you would probably not end up if you were only following what you know.

It was four minutes and nine seconds long and I decided to see how long the ad would play before they revealed this 'magic word'. Just to remind us all, there is no way to skip ahead on these ads. Well, I went right to the end and it still didn't reveal the word; I had to go to their site. Once again, a long, long video promising a 'word' that hadn't shown up as yet...because I had to stop after many more minutes...because I have a life.
