The Black & Queer Roots of EDM

In this video, we explore the backlash against disco music in the late 1970s and its deeper societal implications.
Events like Disco Demolition Night symbolized a violent rejection of disco, which was rooted in Black, Latino, and LGBTQ+ communities. This backlash parallels the disdain for the arts seen in the rise of fascism, where authoritarian regimes suppressed diverse and avant-garde expressions to enforce conformity and control cultural narratives.
We delve into how this cultural suppression targeted innovation, diversity, and marginalized voices, and discuss the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the true origins of house and techno music. By understanding these historical patterns, we can better appreciate the need to protect artistic expression and promote inclusivity in the arts.

They don't want to accept that us white people didn't invent absolutely everything. As a music producer I see this shit all the time, especially in the music prod community. The queer, black and brown history of house might be somewhat well known to queer club goers and music lovers, but the majority of the straight, cis people in the audience are clueless. Not to mention that there was a time I barely knew any of this. There's a lot of denial, white-washing and straight-washing of history. Same thing happened when white people started playing jazz and we tried just as hard to claim it as a white invention. It's a well known phenomenon, so I try to resist it as much as possible.

I'm very very glad you decided to make this video and i enjoyed watching this alot. I'm a white music producer myself and i've known that the history of electronic music is deeply connected with the black and queer communities (This goes for pretty much all the sub genres whether it's house, techno, drum and bass, hip hop). Unfortunately either though i knew it has it's origins in black and queer space, alot of the foundational acts don't get talked about alot; which i think is a huge shame. It's not only the actual electronic acts but also the samples that are in alot of these songs come from black and queer artists. I love showing others songs like "Love Sensation by Loleatta Holloway" or "Something's Got A Hold On Me by Etta James" because they have to realisation that alot of popular music samples alot of older music with little to no credit

Now that a certain demographic wants to praise it when it comes from Dua Lipa or Sabrina Carpenter and throw silent Discos 🪩 here in big cities it's a big F you to those that came before us. I won't disregard the acceptance in Europe because many Black artists sought refuge in Europe it just still stings a bit.

Disco is a tough one... as I grew up with punk, then grunge and alt rock, and those 3 can easily be argued as a reaction to disco... also, I do not feel comfortable dancing, at all. Ever since those horrid "dances" we were seemingly forced to attend in middle school, and to the sounds of early 80s pop, at that. Anyways, thx for this. It's always wonderful to have all the bubbles I've created for myself popped. The truth shall set us free, indeed. EDIT: addendum - It goes without saying, that the vast majority of the "punks" I grew up with have all become "chuds", mostly what can be considered libertarians, but many also RW fuckheads. If not those 2, then confused "Libs". No one I can think of stayed alt/progressive/punk, and none that I know of now being radical leftists. Just me. GenX was tricked out of the revolution * sigh *

Not to mention the complex chord progressions. They employed 7th, 9th, and 11th chords in quick succession. It's bizarre to see that it was treated as "simple music" when it is waaaay more challenging to play.

I haven't watched the whole video, but as someone who listens to a lot of music including EDM and electronic music as a whole, it's sad how EDM has been bastardized by white male capitalists and turned into something that is synonymous with soulless cashgrab which ruins the reputation of the genre even more. I'm talking about "artists" like David Guetta, Zedd, Chainsmokers, Alan Walker, etc. So whenever people talk about EDM, it's always those colonizers that get the limelight. Commercialized music will always be devoid of its nature flavor. But it’s important to not conflate the two: disco itself isn’t inherently corny or bad. Just what it was remembered for, was the stereotypes. People have negative thoughts about disco because of the anti disco era. Thank you for this! Gay history is usually ignored so a lot of people don't know about these things. Even with this hour long video, there are still more interesting things for people to learn about. Jersey Club music was inspired by Baltimore Club also called Baltimore House. Similar to how House was made by increasing the bass and remixing old Disco songs, Jersey Club was made by female DJs remixing old songs. In your song at 56:15 in the video, I can hear the popular Jersey Club drum pattern. Disco didn't just inspired Europeans, but also Japanese people and their version of Disco (CityPop). In Dream Come True's song "kessen wa kinyoubi" (決戦は金曜日) you can hear inspiration from Earth, Wind & Fire's "Let's Groove" and Cheryl Lynn's "Got to Be Real". The guy from Dream Come True also made the music for the video games Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, and you can hear a similar sound in the music for one of Sonic 1's levels called "Labyrinth Zone". CityPop (basically Japanese Disco) made it's way into some songs for anime and video games. Disco had a huge influence not just in American and Europe, but even as far as Japan.

There really is a sense of positive community that is shared through the music of house, and a sense of a fighting spirit in techno. You can tell when an edm song is made to sound cool, and not to feel. This was such a good video ❤️❤️

Lucretia I LOVE this video. I was raised on classic rock and totally bought into the disco sucks stance (but of course not “Miss You” by The Rolling Stones and similar stabs at disco from rock bands I liked), and as I grew more musically curious and adventurous I realized that disco was not just incredible music, but also as revolutionary as punk (and I would argue more so as it challenged the status quo covertly rather than overtly so was more difficult to point to as subversive when it absolutely was). Disco to me feels like a real inflection point in the greater culture, and most people don’t realize how much of the music we consume today wouldn’t exist without disco. Also thank you for your thoughts on gender, my egg recently cracked and I’m figuring out what it means to be queer and non-binary after 40 years of uncomfortably identifying as a cishet man. Hearing the perspectives of others and the way they experience and navigate gender is so valuable. ❤

Came here to learn a little more about Disco Demo Night, I dig country music and its something I've heard a lot about mentioned casually or tangentially and wanted to know how the whole Disco Sucks thing happened. Didn't really make the connection until you drew the comparison between how folks talk about Hip Hop now and understanding it as a dog whistle. It kinda all clicked into place after that. Thanks for a great video!

I'm so glad this was part of my recommended videos! I've been a dance and electronica fan since the 90's when Eurodance was big. As I got older, that transitioned into house music, especially when I found labels like Ministry of Sound and Hed Kandi. I knew that house and its older sister genre disco were founded in minority culture and history. Especially Black and Queer musical identities, because dance music has always been an act of rebellion. I'm so here to see younger people picking up on this and exploring the roots of the genre more thoroughly. I couldn't ask for anything more during Pride this year.

I had no idea techno came out of Detroit! Thanks for setting the record straight, I feel like I've been missing out on a lot of important history. Where I'm from, they don't teach any music history outside of Europe or after 1900 in school, and it's sad that these genres or even their predecessors aren't deemed important enough to talk about. Especially when that history is so much more interesting and relevant to us today than some dead white guy's life 300 years ago 😂

We certainly don't forget here, to the point it's on billboards off I-75. For a deeper dive, "techno rebels" by dan sicko (rip) is a deep dive into techno itself. "Acid Detroit" is also a fantastic read, but I'm only a few chapters in.

It's crazy too, cause in many cases that knowledge has been in plain sight this whole time. 808 State's Martin Price was a moonlight performer: his main gig was running Eastern Bloc, the famed Mancunian importer and storefront of *Detroiter* records; Detroit influence is smeared *all over* Newbuild. I think a lot of people just havent thought to commit the histories of this genre to their memory.

Hell yeah, this is a really well put together essay! I'm coming from the European side, so there's definitely gaps in my knowledge in the early days of disco to post disco outside of parliament, so this has given me some good further reading and listening. Going by how expansive your sourced videos were, you've probably spotted it, but in case you haven't there's a good BBC documentary that has some parallels to what you're covering here - everybody in the place. covers the early rave scene coming out of Caribbean discrimination and the coal miners strikes in the uk, interesting because coal strikers and queer rights protesters often went hand in hand for working class solidarity.

About lesbian trans men: Gay and lesbian (and straight and bi and all the rest) are quirky concepts, they come with an assumption of the person's gender, but otherwise only serves to express the gender of their partners. So people internalize lesbianism as, at least in part, simply loving women in a way that is distinct from normative straight relationships. The "also I am a woman" part can easily be assumed redundant and lacking useful nuance and thus ignored. Of course, I doubt it's this cut and dry in anyone's mind, but I think it's useful to take into consideration. I've experienced this in mlm-adjacent relationships. Some things stay significantly gay and it's publicly perceived as gay for various reasons, mostly negative and harmful but not exclusively.

As a tween, I jumped on the anti-Disco bandwagon because disco had been appropriated by the mainstream labels, who proceeded to flood the airwaves with a billion mediocre and soulless clones. My protest was against the plastic sterile corporate atmosphere that insisted on giving us brainless meaningless pablum. In the late 70s there was this plastic veneer of insincerity that seemed to coat every corporate offering. The mainstream popular music seemed more artificially manufactured than artistically expressed. This pushed me in the direction of the Dead Kennedys. This did not make my love of Motown any less, or justify throwing shade on the disco compositions that were actual bangers (which I did not do). Again, I want to emphasize, my disdain for Disco had nothing to do with who was creating it, and everything to do with what the giant labels were doing with it (and by extension, us as the consumer).

Hey, I'm predominantly Djing Disco, House and HiNRG with some electro/electroclash in the mix. EDM was pretty much the music of my transition (trans DJ pun intended) and I was able to form my early trans femme identity in the club on events I helped organize. Also I found my mother via DJing. She's making music since the late 90s and carved out her existence as a migrant trans woman in Germany thanks to the cultural work as event organizer and curator of queer centered music events. I came across your essay after selecting records for an upcoming gig and couldn't stop til the end. As a trans woman I don't get many gigs, and DJing became more of a side thing for me the past 4 years (being white and having had access to academic education kept me afloat, after covid put an end to music as a viable career for me). But your video reminded me, that this music, although no longer at the center of my life, saved my life more than once. Once you're injected with Disco and its related genres, it never really leaves you I guess. Nowadays I make my living as a political educator, but all theory I teach aside, it's always disco and house where I return, for that reminder of what revolutionary hope feels like. When we tune in to disco, we can grip what that liberation we're working towards feels like. Thank you for reminding me of that and thanks for your work. ❤
