Fairyland does tend to have some things that seem like parodies of the material world. Projection may feed on itself to the point where those not trained on it can experience the same mental form without any of the beliefs associated with it. Playing tricks on people and words from others can have unpredictable effects. Sometimes, people are given dreams for them to let go of associations that drag them down in outer life.
Whatever its intention, this is a critique of atheism. Kovrin is uplifted and inspired by a supernatural presence. He is handsome, charismatic and of superior intelligence until those around him drug him into insensibility of the presence of his supernatural familiar. His wife and father-in-law cannot accept this irrational, albeit benign, aspect of his way of being and drug and analyse him. Without the apparition Korvin grows fat and torpid and ultimately his health collapses and he dies.
