THE BITE WAS ON AS SOON AS MY BAITS HIT THE WATER

Спорт

On this kayak catfishing trip, the bite was on as soon as my baits hit the water. I couldn't finish my intro before the first fish hooked up. It was a fun morning of catfishing with a lot of blue cats and a surprise pb gar being caught.

    I had quite the unique experience this past weekend when I took a friend out on the local river. The shad were busting and we were fishing for smallmouths on top water. I caught a 10 pound channel cat on a buzz bait. Is that normal?

    When they're spawning, or pushing bait up shallow, you can catch them on anything. I've caught them on spinners, chatter baits, spooks, jigs. Wouldn't say common, but awesome fun I would bet!

    youd be surprised at how aggressive and predatory catfish are. the whole stigma of them being bottom feeding, scavenger junk fish is mostly false; theyre mainly hunting for their food, and they hit just like a 6 pound bass when theyre fired up.

    Here in Dallas and Houston and the eastern 2/3rds of Texas we have the heat of Arizona with the humidity of Alabama lol. I’ve seen it 100-115 here in Dallas with humidity of 20-90% now usually when it gets over 95 the humidity starts dropping but i have seen rare occasions where it’ll be 105 with 45% humidity and it’s hell on earth.

    We was going under a bridge in a bayboat and I had all my rods on the floor but my buddy who owned the boat had all his rods standing straight up in the rod holders that run down the sides of the center console... that he was standing at... diving the boat... I laughed so hard all of his rods either broke or had the rod guides stripped off of them... When you gave your pro tip going under the bridge it brought that memory back and I got a good laugh all over again. LOL I'll add to your pro tip though... running ceiling fans and rods don't mix either. LOL Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!!

    The humidity makes it tho. I’d take that 117 with 11% humidity ANY DAY over 95 with 94% humidity. We’ve had days where I live where it was well over 100 with 90%+ humidity while I was running an asphalt paver on a highway in the mountains. No wind in those gaps. All blocked by the trees and mountains. Ugh that was a miserable few months of work. I don’t ever want to experience that again. 😂 I took a thermometer and stuck it up on my steering wheel and it was 162 degrees on the operators station. I don’t know how I survived that. When the trucks dump a load of asphalt in the hopper... there is also a huge blast of moisture. It was a horrible job and I would have quit instantly if I wasn’t getting paid 42 an hour. That was good pay for our area 10+ years ago.

    Gar can breathe oxygen in and out of the water. That's why you see them come to the surface in the summer because of low dissolved oxygen in the water. The only thing you would need to change for that setup is to add a treble hook instead of a j-hook.

  • @patman147
    @patman147 Жыл бұрын

    That is a nice gar and you are right they are hard to land. I live in Florida and they are mixed with a lot of other species. You need to give them 30 seconds or more to eat the bait to hook them, and they will often drop the bait if they feel tension in the line. If you wait 30 seconds on another species, as you know you risk gut hooking them, so not an easy fish to land. Nice work!

    Nice catch on the gar. Someone else made the comment about a gar breathing oxygen. They can live out of the water for a couple of hours. If you are sight fishing for gar, you don't need a hook. Just take some nylon braided rope about 8-10" long, light one end and let it melt and mushroom it, work it apart until it's like baby doll hair. Tie your line aound the mushroom end. When you see a gar throw to the other side of it and slowly drag it across the snout. When it grabs it, put a little tesion on the line and it'll shake its head and wrap himself up. Simple technique shown by richardgenethefishingmachine on his youtube channel.
