THE BIRTH OF PERTURABO!

Ойындар

Hi all Wolf Lord Rho here!
Today we take a look at the very beginnings of a Primarch. With the birth of Perturabo, Hammer of Olympia.
Spoiler warning, the events we are discussing today are from the short story "The Emperor's Architect" by Guy Haley. As always I really recommend you read the story for yourself first. As that's the best way to enjoy the lore, for yourself. Not only that, but we help to support the great Games Workshop and Black Library. Because without them we don't have this amazing lore to talk about! Link: www.blacklibrary.com/new-titl...

Perturabo wanted to build a great civilisation, what a tragedy then that he didn't realise that every world his legion garrisoned was an opportunity for such an effort.

Iron Warriors, for how often they get crapped on by the community, don't seem to understand that thats exactly the behavior that makes Iron Warriors stronger. Its just like in the lore, with all the legions thinking so little of the IW and the things they were forced to do, or had to do to get things done. Perturabo has his flaws like any Primarch, but there is serious strength in steeling your soul and body to horror and grind, which is VERY constant in the 40k universe. IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT

οΟ I always thought that Honsu really was a great (yeah, evil, crazy, whatnot, but still great) character. Sure, Iron Warriors don't have their "MacGuffin" like other Legions, but still they were unstoppable in their strategizing. Perhaps not so much as "we go ahead always" Death Guard, but their perseverance is legendary. Too bad that Pertie had such a stupid mortal upbringing. Had circumstances been different, he would have been a great asset, perhaps a great Loyalist even. Too bad we never saw some friendly banter and rivalry between Dorn and Pertie. Heck, in one of Primarch's book we even see him laughing and smiling when he has a mini adventure - his retinue shocked that he can do it, with him turning to them "hey, I have a reputation to uphold". Oh, how great Iron Warriors could be.

I think he's a very complex personality and it makes it hard for people to really see past the "whining baby" image that a lot of the fandom has for him. I think each Primarch is simply one part of the Emperor. In Perturabo, it was the Emperor's analytical side. I think that while it's certainly a strength for Perturabo, it's also his weakness. The emperor didn't exploit Perturabo. Perturabo was taught by the Olympians that only conquest and death would earn affection. When the Emperor showed up, Perturabo assumed that his father was simply a more grandiose tyrant who would require more grandiose amounts of conquest and death to earn more grandiose gestures of affection. Unfortunately the Emperor never praised his sons for what they destroyed, only for what they created. Alas, the Olympians' bad parenting ruined Perturabo's path from the beginning.

There is also the problem with the prescience, you can see outcomes, but not every path that may lead to a desired outcome, meaning there is still a need to adapt and possibly chose a different path to hopefully get to the final outcome or go for the least damaging ones of the other outcomes if the initial one can't be reach anymore. Also consider the first meeting between Angron and his legion. Angron eventually accepts them when he finds that both of them hold a common ground of greatly valuing their battle brothers, above and beyond the other legions.

Exploited and used, even by the One person he loved the most, The Emperor. I truly believed that if Perturabo had been on the side of the Loyalist, the siege of Terra would have never happened. The traitor forces might have even been stopped before reaching the solar system. We will never know.

This hit incredibly close to home for me. I I grew up in a family of manipulative people, and by the time I was a young man I had grown to loathe it to the extent that I would meet any perceived manipulation on the part of others (real or otherwise) with an unreasonable hatred. It's still a berserk button of mine, but thankfully one that I can manage after cutting myself off from the toxic people I had always been surrounded by. A very big "oof" all the way around.

I think the part where he calculates if they are wothry to be rescued, fits perfectly his role as a siege master. Rescuing someone from a combat zone is always a risk. Perturabo approaches such a problem with cold logic, if the costs exceed the benefits he would not save them. Making such rational decisions about living and dead is exactly what Pert was made for, even if it's not always nice. Iron within and also great viedeo, my wolf Lord

Something I always wondered about Perturabo. In many books he has a deep hatred and loathing for Rogal. So much so that I wonder- If Rogal had gone traitor, would Perturabo have stayed loyal? Would there be a reverse of roles? Would Perturabo have been declared the Praetorian of the Emperor? Would he have done as good, or better, at fortifying the Imperial Palace, Terra, and the system? Personally I'd like to think so, but in the heresy Perturabo has such a grudge against Rogal that it affects his ability. Don't hate on me Rogal fans. I think he is a great character. Top-Tier. But the Emperor himself told Rogal that if he started researching the warp, he would inevitably fall to it. Just an interesting thought experiment since they are so alike. Also, if Perturabo didn't have such a grudge, I feel he would have been a double agent against the traitors. I think he would have had the most calculating mind, if he didn't have such emotional hangups. Anyway, good stuff. Thank's for the content during these trying times.

You should talk about the many iron warrior loyalist. I believe they stayed loyal for the same reason the main body turned traitor. The legion abandon them as traitors, while receiving support from the Imperium. In troops and supplies, so they felt abandon like the main body did, and unappreciated by their primarch.

I've read 10 of the Primarch book... And Perturabo are my favorit so far, but not for the reasons some May think. I don't look up to him as I do with some primarchs. But he are the one who I felt the most connection with. In many ways he are one of the most human ones of them all. His flaws are the reason I like him and his Origins. After his Primarch book, he will always have a special place for me.

What i like about this story is the fact that it seems like or at least hinted at the fact that human beings planted the seeds of corruption in Perturabo. Perturabo had the purest ideals and intentions, but it is always something within the interactions of Man that corrupts themselves and others. Lorgar, Mortarion, Angron, Kurze... All somewhat corrupted by their interactions with Mankind. I can't help but wonder if the Emperor had become corrupted in his devotion to save a people that dont deserve to be saved and was corrupted himself.

You know, when the 3.5 Codex droped most people hated the Iron Warriors because of their rules. I was one of them. Then I read "Storm of Iron" and I started repainting my CSM as Iron Warriors. At that time Perturabo was just a name. But the BL guys did a fantastic job in fleshing him out in the HH books. Especially Guy Haley with his Primarch book, which is one of the better books in the series. I loved that you actually had the whole story arc from his youth to becoming a "Traitor". I would also like to read more of him in the 40K universe. But it seems that he will always be just the guy with the big guns for GW.

I think perturabo was meant to be a colder more war focused mirror of guilliman. Not only do the inspirations for their birth places share a thematic link being that they are inspired by Greece and Rome respectively, but thier personalities aswell. Both are very analytical and highly value efficiency.

I think Perturabo was made to represent the will to do what others wont. The emperor makes some decisions that can be considered to be extremely harsh, and even cruel - but makes them for what seems to be the greater good. Perturabo is like this, he can make a detached, logical decision, unclouded by emotion or even morality - which is needed in the harsh universe of 40k.

His role as intended is exactly what it was: Siegemaster and knowledge amalgamator. He was to take the hardest campaigns and be able to determine the greatest chances of success quickly. The garrison force that could rapidly improve a defense against all possible attacks. He was to run calculations that others could not see fit to do, and execute them with cold, logical efficiency. In short, Perturabo was the Emperors A.I.- a machine that would calculate the greatest questions without human nature interfering. He would not be capable of being a large scale warmaster, diplomat, public speaker or idol. Instead he would be the workhorse that carried them all to greatness. Given the right raising he would have learned to love his position as one of the pieces of the machine that was the only way to make the impossible a reality. Instead he grew to resent it after it was taken advantage of repeatedly without ever being reinforced with positive feedback. He is one of my favorite primarchs because he feels very human- a man with above average talents preyed up by the lazy and well to do.
