The Biggest 'Us' Theories Explained

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Jordan Peele broke a box office record during opening weekend for his newest horror film, “Us.” The movie centers around an all-American family trying to escape their vengeful doppelgängers. But in true Peele fashion, the film is definitely more than meets the eye. From tons of '80s films like "The Goonies" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" to the mysterious messages behind "11:11," Peele brings home the biggest theme of the movie: the dangers of classism and inequality.
CORRECTION: In the video we mistakenly call one of Winston Duke’s characters Greg, when in fact the name of the character is Gabe.

I knew red was “the real one” at the moment Adelaide killed the last twin. She barked/growled at her. That completely threw me off. Then when she finally killed red her reaction confirmed it.

I saw her occasional moment like that but I thought it meant the people were getting changed in some way somehow, especially as her daughter also shows unexplained skill, strength and a flash of excited blood lust when defeating the Tethered twins despite them being genetically modified to be super-strong and agile, and when you first watch it you don't know that's just because she got half her genes from a Tethered parent. The only reason I did keep looking out for signs of one or more of the family getting swapped and the other characters not noticing, is that I would expect that to happen in most doppelganger movies anyway, but I only thought it might happen after the doubles first attack the family, it never occurred to me that Adelaide had already been switched as a child. And even though something about Adelaide in scenes where she's just interacting with her children made me uneasy and suspicious something was wrong with her, I couldn't put my finger on it so I dismissed it.

Adelaide was the first and only successful clone before they abandoned the experiment. I haven’t heard anybody mention this. If you notice she’s the youngest person underground when she leads the real Adelaide to the fun house. She was controlling the real Adelaide not Adelaide controlling her which was happening with all the other clones.

Naw bro they clearly said she gave birth to a demon which was her daughter and that she had to cut her son out because Adelaide had a c-section. The reason I say she’s the youngest is when they show flash backs when Adelaide was underground everybody was adults or teenagers. I’ve seen it twice and I made sure to look at those scenes. I didn’t see anybody younger.

I saw a lot of people saying “why did it take so long for the real lupita to emerge from the ground, why didn’t she just leave”, and I’m just like doesn’t it remind you of when middle class and higher class people say to the poor and disfranchised , why don’t you just become first class citizens like us or blames people who lives in the slums of poverty for their situation entirely on them not realizing the government and society did and does things to keep them there. It’s almost like a generational thing where people are programmed to live and stay in poverty, and being there put Them in that mindset which took them a while to break free from. In interviews Jordan saids “generational trauma” so many times.

it's not about rich and poor because it's the same person. the movie is about good and evil of 1 person. the people underground represent the mind. the evil mind but the good can also be present there in the mind and fight against the evil mind. the people above represent the reality. you can turn your mind into reality. this is why the mother said they think like us and the kid jason know how to control his evil mind. the goverment creates bad thoughts and this what they ment with the cloning. the soul is connected to evil and good of 1 person. it's a vision and reflection of bad and good. the place underground is a closed place so the mind is also closed. they do the same movements because when you move or do something you create it first in your mind.

The final fight between Adelaide and Red honestly gave me chills. The way red moves around is haunting and it seems like the whole room is set up like a chess board. Adelaide struggles but red keeps her cool. And you can tell she's been waiting to do this. The haunting music that accompanies it is amazing. The chords move alongside red as she paces back and forth. This movie is just super intricate and nothing's an accident.

Another theme was "Thriller" from Michael Jackson. It was close to midnight (11:11 p.m.), when she entered the House of Mirrors. The boy with the Werewolf mask. The red jumpsuits/one glove. When they showed the doppelganger's mimicking their counterparts, they resembled the zombies in the video. At the end, Adelaide smiled diabolically, the way Michael Jackson smiled at the end in Thriller video.

To the people who are still confused as to the main overall message of the film: The main message or theme was to convey that we live in a society where the higher class citizens are treated like first class citizens while the lower class citizens are oppressed and forgotten about in American society. Yes there’s thousands of themes that this films draws but IMO this was the overall theme, everything else’s are bonuses that Jordan has given us to discuss and figure out over the course of years.

Ben Connor It is though, the film had many messages and themes woven throughout it but this is the biggest one, literally The people themselves literally live above ground(high class) and the tethered literally live under ground(low class). While the above ground people live a life full of abundance not even realizing their privilege the people underground are given scraps, they were abandoned and forgotten about in society. You can connect the tethered to any poor and disenfranchised group of people in America. I’m just looking at it from the bigger picture and all of the connotations that reflects American society, Jordan literally said that’s what this movie is, a reflection of what America is(US=United States). There’s so much more things we can discuss but I basically just dumbed it down for the people who are still confused, this is at least an entry point to all of the interesting and thought provoking social and political commentary that the film provided.

the movie is about evil and good in 1 person!! the people underground represent the evil mind and thoughts. the place above represent the reality👍🏾 goverment is doing clone experiments that means they create bad thought and the evil minds with media and bad role models and financial problems and more!!! this is why the Taylor Family for example fought with each other. the tethered represent the evil version of the originals. and the good can become an evil and the evil can become a good like Adelaide's situation.

The experiment started with rabbits and then they moved on to humans. The rabbits multiply fast so they kept them as food for the clones. 11 11 ... 1+1+1+1=4 ... 4 in the family? Scissors have two heads but are connected at the core. ... Just like the human and the clone.

It's a spiritual awakening (gone wrong lol). The tethered fam seems to represent their souls and were trying to survive against their egos/the people we view as normal. The tethered repped oneness and peace but weren't given the chance to flourish, and got caged in early childhood. And they were the elements at their core - The boy was fire, the girl was air (running/track, always jokes like air signs do), dad was water (initiated beach trip/always wanted to be on the water) and mom is earth (Mother Earth/ she was running the underground area beneath the earth). And so much more....so deep Jordan Peele, whew

Where Adalaide was barking and growling when she killed the twin and Red, Where she was on the beach mentioning to kitty that she wasn’t much of a Talker, and I think the last has to do with Jason on the beach when he told one of the twins that he was digging a tunnel. Those kinda interested me. Just the small details and How Addy decided they should go to Mexico because she knew what was happening over the events of Hands Across America

Here is something that really blew my mind... the final song is called Les Fleur (The Flower). Something coming up from the ground. The last lines of the song are, "Light up the sky with your prayers of gladness and rejoice for the darkness is gone. Throw off your fears let your heart beat freely at the sign that a new time is born". This to me is the song of the "tethered", they have come into the world from the Earth and it is now their time to rule.

You also missed the Twin Peaks references. The hall of mirrors is set up to resemble a forest. Just before Adelaide reaches the portal she gets startled by a fake owl. This mirrors the portal to the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks where Agent Cooper enters (and gets trapped) and which his doppelganger escapes from in the second season finale (from the Red Room that features multiple doubles of Twin Peaks citizens). The owls in Twin Peaks are harbingers/indicators of evil. The original Adelaide in called Red, and is instrumental in the other tethered's escape. Also, The Time Machine (the films as well as the story by H.G. Wells) features the underground Morlocks and the above ground Eloi.

I noticed that too and there is a meaning to it. It's like the american dream killed the band's meaning in the name of consumerism. First you spot the shirt on a working class dude in 86, later you spot one of the rich twins wearing it. Also the first shirt to appear is a my war shirt, with a more direct political message then later the girl is using a shirt that only contains the band logo that by the way are four bars that look a lot like the 11 11 thing.

Adding to the 1111 imagery, I think a lot of people miss the Black Flag T-Shirt at the Santa Crux Amusement Park scene in 1986. Yes, the Black Flag logo is a flag in the wind, but notice the bars of the logo. Up, down, up, down. Kind of looks like a 1111 two of them down like The Tethered.

That’s what I’ve been wondering too, there’s a bit on inconsistency with the tethered’s actions lining up with their counterparts. While down below they’re “forced” into relationships and seem to follow every single action until they just decide to stop? So like you said why wouldn’t she ever make an attempt to leave? Clearly they were able to. It’s hard to appreciate the symbolism when there’s such a huge plot hole
