As mentioned on hasan’s stream, even taking into account potentially paying back all of the money and doing all the work required to figure out every last person he scammed, this could very well and very easily escalate into legal trouble. My family has been involved with heavy gambling addiction. My uncle growing up had a severe gambling addiction. He'd steal money growing up, put it in the slots. Whenever he'd ask for money for something. And example being toothpaste (just a simple example). You'd be pretty much forced to go with him to the store to make sure he actually buys what he's asked for. The explanation of the gambling addiction, that mentality of "I'll borrow money, win more and pay them back" is spot on and I really appreciate bringing awareness to this. And also for anyone who cares. In the last 3-4 years, my uncle has gotten better. He actually has money in his bank account (which is a big deal). And is able to provide for his family

Really great that he is getting better. Unfortunately from what I've heard from many therapists, is that gambling addiction is one of the hardest to solve. My dad is one. Borrowed money behind my mom her back all the time, that she was paying back for him when she got confronted by the people he borrowed from. This was in the time when money was a real scarcity for us. You could say under the poverty line. Beside money issues the usual addict behaviors were there like aggression and manipulation. He never once apologized. Her best choice was to divorce him when I was 12 years old. He still hung it over her head for "leaving him while he was in need" and wasn't ashamed to ask for money after. She never gave in anymore. A once submissive mother is now one of the strongest people I know and financially healthy. My dad had a very rough childhood, but I learned later on (now 29) that its not our job to fix him. Just to anyone reading this. Its not your job to fix people, its their own, and it is not your fault ever.

I really appreciate Lud sharing the stats and resources at the beginning. If anyone here happens to be struggling with any sort of addiction, I am so sorry for what you're going though and I understand how hard it must be. Just know that there are people who care about you, and we all hope you can get the help you need. This includes Sliker, who deserves a chance at recovery but who obviously must also face the consequences of his actions. In addition, the thing about the sex toys makes me think he probably just doesn't have any morals or shame anymore; however, I still hope one day he can get better, make amends, and try to repay those he scammed. Although it seems Xqc and Train might do it before him, which I think is admirable of them.

@@ThaGr1m the thing is 'surge in help' for gambling addiction isn't giving them more money. I had a friend once that scammed me, not out of a lot of money, only $200. But that one experience drove me to not trust people when it comes to money and to not be nice or “forget out about it, sure, no problem” with those subjects. People use you in weird ways, and you’ll see it because those people usually turn out to have nothing if you take a deeper look into their life. It was years ago but I’m glad it happened so I could learn a lesson. All the people he scammed need to try to get together and put a lawsuit out. The dude will never understand otherwise
I hope he gets the help he needs and the people who need the money back the most get it.

yo, Ludwig. i'm someone who works in health equity & advocacy, writing about things including different mental health conditions, and i'm here to thank you for the empathy you give to things like gambling addiction. statistics like the ones you started with -- suicide rates -- are HUGELY important to humanize and emphasize just how serious addiction really is. far too many people still view addiction as a character flaw instead of a symptom of a mental health condition in the brain. treating it the way you do is SO important for encouraging others to show the same empathy instead of writing people off as greedy, and pushing people away from seeking help toward darker "solutions." i know you've got some personal experience motivating you, but you bring the same empathy to just about every other analogous situation you talk about, so it's not like this is an outlier. you are, by all accounts, a conventionally attractive cis white guy with a large platform who is not only aware of the power of setting an example, but actively sets that example, again and again, instead of "leaving politics to politicians" and staying on the sidelines. people without a platform and marginalized people, in this case people with mental health conditions, can shout into the void forever. but your voice is more likely to be heard. when you use it to amplify our message -- that's the kind of allyship we need. (this isn't an ego trip, this is a from-the-bottom-of-my-heart thanks. we're, *literally,* fighting for our lives out here. this means a lot.) i'm dead serious when i say this: it's people like you modeling empathy that pave the way for positive change. even when it gets especially tough, please keep it up.

Well said..lud bud for life. I know that there's a big consensus that addiction is a disease, but I just don't agree with that. Not literally a disease in it's traditional meaning. More so as a way of thinking that's been heavily reinforced that it becomes a normality. I do, however, feel that once you're an addict, you will always be an addict. Constantly fighting triggers. Idk where I'm going with this but shit's crazy and we all need to look out for each other and really try for empathy.
@KayeTheDragon
Жыл бұрын
@@mikehitchcock5753 The question I have for you is, how much physical change in the brain should we be willing to write off as just "a way of thinking" vs "a disease"? What you're describing is correct, but that *is* a disease. Say for example - I think we'd agree that depression isn't just a way of thinking. Obviously people have free will, but wanting to be "just not depressed anymore" unfortunately doesn't make people "just not depressed anymore." Similarly, idk how much you know about OCD as a proper disease (not just the cultural idea of "haha i'm so picky"), but those kinds of compulsions go beyond a way of thinking and become a disease of the brain. You could certainly look at someone with an eating disorder and say, "it's just a way of thinking," but it is also, undoubtedly, a disease. The *really* important thing, though, is this: *why would you try not to call it a disease?* Like... why disagree with that? (Nevermind the science behind why it's a disease, which I would highly recommend. The reading can be a little dense, but it's always good to know the facts where mental health conditions are concerned.) *Refusing to call addiction a disease reinforces the idea that it's a character flaw.* And the stigma associated with that - "you got yourself into this situation so you don't deserve help getting out, you let yourself become this, if you just cared enough you'd get better," none of which is true - is what keeps people from getting the care they need. Because society treats them like that, they're too ashamed to admit the problem to themselves, much less anyone else, so they don't get help. By the time the problem becomes impossible to ignore? Well, your chances of being suicidal - Ludwig went over that already. Calling it a disease is an important part of allowing people to feel like they can get help for it. And since harm reduction should always be our priority, we should probably call it a disease.
damn the noise gate be actin up
I feel ya Lud, got scammed myself by lending money to a friend which is at this time is £500 currently with no repayment in sight - just the same holding message that gets sent around. Gambling, Drugs, Gacha addiction and also MLM often destroy your life. And not just that, it will also ruin your family and friendship. You will drag them with your own problem without you realized. There's 2 guys in my extended family who have a gambling addiction and 1 guy with MLM problem. I told others to stop "help" them by lending them money, but they didn't listen to me. 2 years later they finally regret it.
Hittin' that manipulation scam.
The flesh-light story is CRAZY!
I really hope that not those who got scammed are paid back, bless you and xQc's souls for deciding to do that, but I also really hope that Slicker gets the help he needs for his gambling addiction. Addiction is a very unhealthy thing and gambling falls on the lower rating of one out of many compared to things like drugs, alcohol and such. I can understand his point of view but it's gotten out of control and he needs therapy for this thing desperately.

Lud, I'm so impressed you started on the seriousness of gambling addicition and helplines and things. I've seen other people talk about this exact situation, or others talk about other gambling addicition situations, but they don't really start the video to put their viewers in a better mindset when approaching the source material. Usually they barrage on the person and go "but it's a serious problem so be nice" and the viewers, who haven't been put into a good mindset when thinking of the person talked about, aren't nice. Props to you! EDIT: I hope you don't feel too guilty about it being your server, Lud. You invited him and trusted him to respect others and your chats. You held him to a level of expectation most people added to a server would respect without a second thought. He took advantage of that, and that's not your fault
