The Biggest Reason Your Riding Isn't Improving - Better Riding in 2 Minutes or Less

In this short clip, taken from the "Steering, Straightness and Sideways" course, Mary Wanless helps us understand why improvement is sometimes so difficult and why we often get stuck in a rut in our riding.

BRAND NEW COURSE COMING JUNE 2019 WITH MARY WANLESS
"Collection and Impulsion"
The FEI definition of collection is "The increased engagement and activity of the hind legs, with joints bent and supple, stepping forward under the horse's belly.". We all know collection when we see it but how do you achieve it with your horse? What training does the horse need? What skills does the rider need? How do we change a horse that is "On The Forehand" through to "Collection"? These are just some of the questions that Mary and Ali will answer in this course using groundwork, rider biomechanics and ridden exercises.

THIS is why I need a mirror or some film taken while I ride... I have already learned that to keep my legs where they SHOULD be, I must endure feeling really weird and uncomfortable- I rode one day with a different instructor, we were playing around with sitting trot and I was having trouble tipping, so she physically put my leg where is SHOULD have been, and man was that a weird and almost unsustainable feeling- I went home and watched so many videos and figured out a way to keep my legs back (I lift my legs off the saddle at the hip and then pull them back below the knee, to keep the proper hip to heel ratio- before my leg was too far forward-I have to do this numerous times during my ride but it SEEMS to be slowly working...) So even without the exercise I know what she means. Before that instructor put my legs where they needed to be so I could feel the difference, I would have sworn that my legs were just right, they felt right, but all the riding I had ever done previously was not supervised for technique, so I was TOTALLY wrong. And hence my tipping problem, which I have, if not mastered, then at least made good steady progress with. I UNDERSTAND WHY I tip now, and that is half of the battle, for me. So I am ready for the fact that some things are going to FEEL wrong to be actually BE right... I love Mary, she is such a talented, effective teacher!
