    For everyone saying “what if my pup isn’t motivated by treats?” You train them while they’re hungry. Don’t feed them till it’s training time (so train in the morning before breakfast). Make your pup work for the food.

    How sad... he is an infant...separated from his mother too early (8 wks old should be the absolute EARLIEST to be separated from the mom) , and is now relegated to a cage. He is 'quiet', because he is probably frightened/in despair/feels powerless. Why would anyone get a puppy at 6 wks old before he has finished being weaned from his mother?! :/ Its basic cruelty, all around.

    i load treats into my pups crate as i get ready for bed, i usually find her sitting outside the crste waiting to be let in, i put them in back too. From day one she’s always been required to hold for release out of the crate, and at the door and gate, so important to have them managing their impulse control. She’s improving on greeting visitors, my visitors cooperate by not touching her until she’s calm. Thanks for all your videos, so helpful and encouraging.

    My dog loves her crate. She will snack in her crate. If you give her a treat, she runs to her crate. The crate door is open all day, she goes in and out voluntarily. At night, all we have to do is telle her time for bed, she goes in her crate and we shut the door and put a towel over the crate. She is only 4 months and this is her routine. Leaving the door open all day is good. When I go shop, i give her a treat and she goes to her crate. I will then shut the door and tell her she must stay and guard. I am trying to teach her that when the crate is really no longer needed she will just go in, door open and rest and relax until Mummy comes back home. In the morning we open the door and she takes her time coming out, she is very relaxed and loves her

Crate training is specifically used to get your puppy in a structured routine of toilet/obedience training while giving them a space of their own they feel relaxed and safe in. Once they have learnt the rules and behave appropriately inside the house, they can have more freedom until eventually the door gets left open and they choose to go in and out themselves.

He is bred to protect sheep at night in the mountains so we took this into consideration.

    This was a great reminder, my pup was great in the crate when I was repeating this training regularly but as we were having success I stopped. He has since started barking if he thinks something fun is happening and he wants to join in. I need to start value-adding to the crate again. He is still great overnight and doesn't make a noise until morning when he needs to toilet. I have a blanket over his wire crate as he gets visually overstimulated easily.

    These are great videos, I especially love the idea of "creating value" for the dog when it comes to the behavior you're wanting. And showing examples and the idea that the reward comes from inside the box, so smart, but I never would have thought of that, and now I have a better understanding how how to fuse the behavior you want with their brains reward system. Genius. Come to think of it, my wife did that to me years ago and I just didn't know it until now.

    This video is so incredibly valuable! I had to place my puppy, whom I brought home only five days ago from about 500 miles away, in a crate for the drive home, than a lot during the first three days because he was not potty trained. So he didn't like his crate. Then two days ago I was able to start crate training following your suggestions, and he already walks into the crate on his own. I'm so very grateful for the wonderful videos you share so generously❣❣❣ Between your videos, and another trainer that I follow, I feel that I'm in a great start with my puppy❣❣ 🙏🏾🙏🏾💜🙏🏾🙏🏾

    @@McCannDogs Ken, please tell me how to perform crate training with a puppy that is not food motivated? Like AT ALL? She's a border collie, 9 weeks. I tried many different snacks, have 2 kinds of kongs and she's just not interested. I tried throwing snacks to the crate, she does not care. I give her a kong with snacks - she licks it 3 - 4 times and leaves it. So I tried putting some toys to the crate - ok, she goes inside, bot momentally wants to leave. I then give her snacks, but they just lay in the crate and she does not eat them.. And she does not feel rewarded.

    How to add value to the "ok" command. And when is it to be used? When satisfied with behaviour? Meaning after praising?

  • @OscarHanzely

    @OscarHanzely

    2 жыл бұрын

    "Ok" or "free" is a release command. It's when you don't require their attention or stay position they are in. It's not a praise command. "Yes" or "Good" are foten used for praise to mark good behavior.

    Yes, that's what we did. Our pup was 8 weeks when we got him. He missed his mommy and litter mates and the crate was traumatizing for him at only 8weeks to be left all alone in it. We allowed him to sleep with us in bed for the first 2 weeks. After that we put in crate for short periods of time for about a week. Then at approximately 3 weeks he started sleeping in it with no issues. He has NEVER pee or poop in crate either

    I swear I have the easiest puppy ever to train. He just strolled in his crate today and laid down. I've had him 2 days, he goes potty EVERY time he goes outside. He went all night lastnight without having an accident and only got a little fussy. (I implemented the technique you demonstrated in another video of tapping the crate, interrupting the behavior and firmly saying no, then praise when he settled down.) Didn't have an issue after that. And he stays out of his crate all day, but I have a gated off room and am with him all day. This way it is very easy to see when he needs to go outside. Unfortunately, the first kind of treats gave him diarrhea and he's not interested in eating kibble bits when I first started training sessions. He just takes it from me and puts it on the ground. Lol So I'm at a loss right now (until I find the right treat). I want him to learn his name first and foremost, but I don't have anything to reward him with other than praise right now. Any suggestions? I want to avoid playing roulette with dog treats. Lol

    My puppy is a slow eater and isn't very motivated by her kibble either. I started soaking her food in warm water for a while and used her meal time to train her (hand feeding a bit of the soaked kibble as a reward). This way she eats more and we get our training in! Hope this helps but I can't promise anything, as all pups are different!
