It's been year 27, for me. I work in a "Home Depot", like store. What's funny is, I do not want to be a manager, I don't want that kind of responsibility. I want my work day to end at 5pm, and to have my weekends free. The extra money isn't worth the stress, and headache. This is where one ends up, when you have no passion, purpose, or ambition, and do poorly in high school.

Louis, in the Marine Corps we have an expression: "Embrace the Suck." Unless you embrace it, you'll never survive to get past it. Sleeping for 3 days in a fighting hole flooded with water up to your chest. Embrace the suck. Going out on missions just days after getting hit with an IED. Embrace the suck. Completing a march on a broken leg. Embrace the suck. Embrace it and survive to fight another day. We have another expression: "Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome." Congratulations on your continued success sir. You have both our attention and our respect.

If nothing happens, they get hated for being the FBI. If something happens, it's all "WHY DIDN'T THE FBI DO SOMETHING???? THEY HAD HIS PHONE, THEY COULD HAVE STOPPED & PREVENTED THIS!!!!" The FBI will never win. They will always be hated here. I value my privacy, but at the same time, I have a bit of sympathy for the people who I know will never win regardless of what happens in the court of public opinion.

Hi Louis, I wanted to thank you for the video and the advice. Just found this video and a couple like it about time management and skill improvement specifically about attitude, and I am slowly coming to realize in my early 20s how important of a role the emotional side plays in such matters. Thanks again for your help and advice in helping me along the way to change :)

Ive been learning games programming for over 10 years, I'm still struggling but getting better every day. I see it as a long list of small problems to solve, and I like solving them, and it feels great seeing my game come to life. I enjoyed doing it every day, until the point I worked so hard on that and my day job that I burnt myself out and had RSI. I've taken some time off but I'll get back to it very soon and learn to manage myself better. Great video, thanks. I always enjoy watching these.

Your description of the step by step process of learning little things, fucking up, learning little things again, etc... and celebrating each step of the way... only to find it surprising that people are impressed by and value your end point... That's awesome! I identify with that so much! It took me a long time to start to understand why anyone thought my acquired skills were impressive. Ultimately it boiled down to: they did not have the skill. More importantly, they did not ever have the interest to learn. Maybe they did, but they lacked the time or the logical/critical thinking skills to develop analytical skills enough to progress much at all (critical thinking is in serious drought in the USA, but I'm talking about the kind that make people excel at technical things and this is not universal among people). Specialist focuses impress people because of their context of presuming such skills to be beyond them and the realm of "special people" or "genius" (and I hate being called genius; it just feels like a total slap in the face to my struggles). In many cases, I think it's not entirely outside their grasp to acquire these skills to some degree (that was part of my computer skills instruction core ethos), but being really excellent at them might indeed be outside their grasp. That's where "being special" might come in (but so too do the deficits of "being special", because it's often a trade off, and we see this a LOT in the tech fields). Celebrating each incremental discovery and step of new understanding is critical to being willing to move on to the next one. You're so right to draw attention to these little steps and to make people consider them. When this process is obstructed enough times by repeat failure, it really leads to a major loss in motivation to try again, so celebrating the successes and looking at the progress history is important. "Learned helplessness" is a thing. In my decades of life, I've attained specialist skills good enough to impress people inside and outside the fields I got my feet wet in, but those careers never let me progress far before some roadblock (usually an asshole or a layoff) forced me to start over again somewhere else. I never got deep enough in any one field to be a star in it and no one ever taught me to pursue my interests enough to become the best (because it was always "that's not practical" or whatever; and now today the skills I have that set me aside from others are not valued anyway because capitalism invests only in sure things, immediate profit, and fads). I became a generalist in specialties revolving around the tech industry. I actually wish that I had been so focused and driven in one area that I became a real expert in that area, rather than be so flexible that I could do everyone's job (sometimes better than they) but not something everyone else could not do at least half-assed (and that's all that matters now) when pressed to do it. By becoming so flexible, I became dispensable.

This applies to so many things: working out, programming, fast food and so much more. The key is to not just fix your mistake, but build upon today/yesterday's success or failure when you make it to the next thing. And of course, making it to the next thing is important. This also builds upon the idea of a web of knowledge. Continue making connections until you begin to really have an understanding.

I've been binging all of these videos, the ones on procrastination, depression, self-pity and all this, and I've gotta say, they're doing a lot to help challenge my thinking. I've been out of school and working jobs I don't care for for the past three or so years, and I'm out of my parents' house, and I've got all of this stuff I like, but I don't feel fulfilled, or productive, or any of this, right? Sometime back in March or so, I figure I'd try to draw a bit. I didn't like art in high-school, but I'd pick it up, and had a lot of fun just doodling, and copying other art from sight, and doing all of this, and I realized that even if I could never make a career out of it, having something that fulfills my creativity is something I want. But for every day I'd sit down and practice, bar the first two or so weeks when I was riding the high of discovering something that made me genuinely happy, there were three days, four days, a week, two weeks, where I was intimidated, and I didn't understand this, and I can't attempt this because I'm not ready and don't want to embarrass myself. I'd be at work, doing whatever it is I'd be doing, hating it, hating myself, and I thought "As soon as I get home, I'm doing this, because I want to do it", and then I'd get home, and go to sleep, or watch a movie, or play a video game, and feel like a worthless sack of shit. Hell, later on I even invested in a $400 art tablet, because I thought spending a significant enough amount of money on something would drive, and motivate me, to become better, because if I didn't, then the money was wasted, but I didn't do that, and six months later, I'm better than I was at the start, yeah, but I'm not six months better. I'm four weeks better, maybe two months better, but not six months better. I can still barely use a pencil steadily, my form is fucked, and my lines are inconsistent, but for all the worthless motivational videos, articles, feel-good "You'll get there, just believe!" shit on the internet, written by people who've often never known what it feels like to be so far down that it feels better to lie down, and cry, or give up, or accept that you're always going to be working a dead-end job and that you're gonna die unfulfilled, something about your stuff is making me feel something. And I don't know if that's gonna last, because motivation is fleeting, but you're absolutely right that I need to evaluate myself, my mind, what I say, and the empty promises I make to myself, as well as the restrictions I set for myself just because I don't know better, and I'm gonna at least try. For all the money spent on an expensive tablet, I've been laying on the ground, drawing in a notebook for the past few hours, listening to your content, and it was a lot of fun. I'm probably gonna be using these same videos as a crutch when I'm feeling down, and back in my usual state, but hey, as far as I'm concerned, I'm basically crippled from all of the self-doubt and excuses. A crutch is probably what I need before I can walk on my own. Thanks a bunch, Louis.

"Fuck perfection" I always have a hard time with this due to my being afraid to fail. And I do realise that it's okay to fail as long as I learn something from it, but I still tend to find difficulty in doing so. I hope to be able to be more brave and have a "fuck it let's just get it over with" attitude. ( Obvsly i don't mean I'm not going to completely not care about what I do).

Braincrack: The ideas that I refuse to implement until they're perfect. Reality is that they're never gonna be perfect, no. I'm gonna suck when I first start. But the thing is I have to get out the suck. I'm gonna suck at the beginning and I have to be ok with it, because as I do something, I'll figure out how to suck less. Now "tomorrow" is a dangerous word, because just thinking about the work I'm gonna achieve tomorrow makes me feel so much better, and as a result, today I'm not gonna do shit, because tomorrow I'm gonna do it. And you know what, if I dont do shit today, I'm not gonna do shit tomorrow. Now "tomorrow" can actually works, if I do it this way: every single day I build on what I did yesterday, and every single day I suck less thanks to what I did yesterday. Please celebrate every time I suck knowing that thanks to this experience, I'm gonna get a bit better. Every step of the way I'm gonna suck a bit less, and I'm gonna celebrate every smallest success, and there's gonna be "aha" moments. I'm gonna get somewhere. I just can't afford to wait till the circumstances are all perfect. All I can do is work today to prepare, accumulate knowledge. Because at the time I get good at something, all the fuck-ups won't matter anymore. So I really have to stop procrastinating and make time to do stuffs now.
