The Biggest Accidents And Injuries On MythBusters

The cast and crew of MythBusters did all kinds of wild science experiments over the years, and for the most part, they were quite safe. The MythBusters team generally took every precaution to make sure that nothing could hurt anyone, but on occasion, accidents still happened.
It seems that host Adam Savage and Build Team member Tory Belleci suffered the lion’s share of injuries over the years, but the hosts all knew the job was dangerous when they took it. From a truly horrifying incident with a cannonball to Jamie’s deadly lawnmower, let’s take a look at the biggest accidents and injuries on MythBusters.

A bully hit me in the testicles with his knee and a basketball during gym, which was a morning class for me. By woodshop 2 hours later, one was swollen. By late afternoon, I was in emergency surgery. It weakened my lower abdominal muscles, indirectly causing 4 hernias. I am held together by mesh in that region.

I doesn't sound very bad but in softball a ball hit my thumb nail straight on, breaking the nail and damaging the growth plate. It is prone to ripping, usually about a quarter of an inch from the edge into where it attaches to the skin.

The fact that these good and honest people would all still be in prison to this day had someone randomly been sitting in that minivan makes me question how the justice system has come to operate. The whole world gets off so hard on punishment that nothing they could ever do would satisfy everyone and all 5 (or at least 3 of them) would be getting raped and beaten to this day in the penitentiary for that accident. Well, except Grant. He would be the lucky one.

@@everythingsalright1121hey did work closely with the bomb squad, starting with their second large explosion. According to Adam, the first time (the tree cannon segment) they got a film/TV pyrotechnics person as their expert/licensed to blow stuff up person. He had no clue what he was doing as he was an expert in making things look like they blew up with big fireballs, not actually blowing things up. So they just filled the cannon with the maximum amount of black powder he was licensed to use and it resulted in debris flying over their heads (without any shielding for them). The next time (I believe it was the cement truck), they called the FBI who put them in contact with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office bomb squad. And they also began using their lexan shields in case things went badly again.

I lived right down the road from that incident. The Alameda county bomb range, that they used so often, is on a reserve base called Camp Parks (don't know if it's still a base). The western border of the base was Tassajara Rd, and there was housing all along the road. But that was, at the time, the eastern end of Dublin; then came the base, and then there was nothing but empty space for tens of miles to the East. I've always wondered why they set up with the cannon facing west, towards town, when they could have set up facing east towards endless nothing. Edit: In the area of the bomb range, there were no buildings on the base to influence which direction the gun might be fired.

You know what, there was an incident in my country where a lawnmower blade broke due to accidentally hitting a rock and was sent flying towards a nearby teenager. The resulting effect was tragic as the girl's skull was sliced clean horizontally and her brain was thrown out in front of her friends... It became a major headline. Poor girl😔

I rewatched Mythbusters recently and I was so surprised by the lack of safety in the first two seasons. They were SO much more reckless than they were in later seasons. And it often ended up with the shop filled with smoke because it was on fire because they thought they could just test like rocket engines and shit right in the shop lol. Really, go watch the first seasons and compare it to later seasons. I'm amazed with what they could get away with. And they were so lucky to not get burned on that coffee creamer episode. Everyone underestimates just how flammable powdered ANYTHING is.

Confederate Rocket needs a re test. I don't believe that they got liquid nitrous oxide in the engine. From what I know of Propane it will not re-liquify just passing from one tank to another via a hose. I also know why the rocket powered cars on Junkyard Wars had trouble working when the propane tank was mounted up-side-down. I don't know if the nitrous oxide would have gone back to liquid the way the Mythbusters were doing it. I think the lack of range was because they only had gas in it and that ran out to fast where the liquid was supposed to convert to gas as the rocket flew giving a longer range. The myth of blowing up a propane tank by shooting it would have worked better if the tank was 10 to15 or 20 percent full and not fresh filled. Also when they had to disable a safety valve to get it to blow in a fire I heard a story that they could have saved time by placing it in the fire up-side-down, the liquid propane would blocked the valve and kept the gas propane from venting. It still would have burst from over pressure because propane expands over 270 times in volume when going from liquid to gas.

All gases that can be liquified by pressure will recondense after passing through a hose as long as there is no pressure regulater in between. It just takes a while but ultimately the liquid level in both containers will end up at the same absolute hight. The rocket the mythbusters built definitely had liquid in it or it would have burned out even faster. I just don't have any clue how much liquid. As in how full it actually was. And blowing up a propane tank by shooting it can not work regardless of how full it is. Propane is only explosive if mixed with air within a certain ratio range and that can not be achieved while having liquid propane present in a container. (at least without pushing compressed air into the tank) And all propane tanks are built with enough safety margin to not burst from normal gas pressure even if you punch a hole through it.

I agree on the rocket car, but not only was the thrust alignment trash (and agree, admittedly how much better could it get, it's a car...), but their ramp design wasn't well suited for the experiment, because the ramp wasn't designed with a transition from flat to the final takeoff angle, it just went from flat ground to the final angle, so the car bounced. That always bothered me. Now again to be fair, the myth didn't call for a perfectly designed transition for the takeoff, but it was just frustrating knowing that the car probably could've launched much further before going end over end if they had built the ramp better.
