The BIG SCAN! Our main batch of breeding ewes get scanned.

The pregnancy scan is always a nervous day for any sheep farmer and it's no different for us.
I'm fortunate that I can scan my own sheep so that saves me another expense and also means I constantly know how the scan is going.
Let me know what you think of the results.

ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on KZread and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

“Lizzie doesn’t want me to show Jock bumping into things and falling because it’ll make people think she’s a bad parent” Nope! Letting a toddler run around outside in the fresh air and occasionally letting them fall down is important! That way he learns to handle gentle bumps on his own and he knows his parents are there for the bigger ones. How many babies that small get to go to work with Dad? He’s going to treasure that time when he’s grown up

Of course you should set reasonable limits. My father promised me a root beer and extra cheesy Mac&Cheese if I could ride our two week old bull. I was 9 years old. You better believe I did it. Probably a bit to far for a lad my age.

You want two in every sheep, but also when you inevitably get three I'd imagine you want the exact same amount of single so you can rub them off onto the sheep with a single. :D No pet lambs this year would be ideal! Singles aren't best for scanning numbers but best for you not having to raise a triplet lol!

I hear you getting pretty excited bout the 4 lambs expected, and then i got reminded that that was acutally pretty rare. It' a long read, this is the sumary: One ZwartBles Yew who could annoy us but produced 22 lambs in 8 years with us, bringing up 20 of them succesfully (some times with a bit of our help.) My grandparents have a couple of sheep in their wee field ( litteraly 2 or 3 sheep at most). We got a ZwartBles and it was the most redoncules sheep we ever had. I'm not sure if she was a hog or gimmer, but either way, she produced some crazy lams, and usually had us fooled while at it. The first year she just had a single and the year after that she had triplets but sadly a wee lamb died in the first few days. Now we enter crazy face. Year three she just has lambed a cracking size of twins, we leave her alone in the lil shed we have and after a few hours we go and check in making sure everything is fine as we go and find we now have 4 lambs of the same mom. Sadly only 3 make it as a tiny yew dies after 4 days or so. (the other yew who was a hog that year had 2 lambs and also didn't expect that as its usually just a single) The year after (4th time lambing now) Browny, as we called her, again birthed 4 lambs (all her lambs were born on her own without any help at all btw) but all 4 made it and turned out to be really big, as her "sister" also rased triplets on her own without bottle). The year after both got a set of triplets, both nurtured without needing to assist with the bottle. The year after, this is now year six of being a mom for our Browny, I had the plesure of overseeing the lambing of Browny (part of it) as she choose the one day that my grandparents were away. I remember she was licking her first lamb as i arrived, and soon after 2 more came out pretty much at the same time... and for the next good half hour that was about all that happend, she loved all 3 lambs and all 3 were standing by the time i left them to their own, although one had a bit of a funny walk... a couple hours later i go check on them again and suddenly there is (you guessed it) a 4th lamb, also healthy and all on their feet or walking when i put them up cus i wanted to look that their oll right. The one yew lamb with the funny walk looked a bit weak, so i put it on the mothers tiets (as you call them) and it sukkeled a bit but not that much. Later that night my grandparents took it in because the other siblings were drinking all the milk and it looked like it might not make it through the night. They kept it inside just to keep it comfortable but by 5AM they got hit by the harsh reality of a yew baby fith a funny walk crying for food haha. It made it trough, we had it for over 3 years, but sadly never got lambs, before she got her own private field somewhere else, just big enough for her on her own. The other sheep that year also mothered 3 lambs without any fuss or hassle. Now we are past the major part of the crazyness, with the second to last lambing being a simple but ridigt set of twins, but the other one, what ive been told a Blue de Maine, but without the blue face, had 4 lambs, but she decided to give birth on the coldest night of a three year gap, it also snowed, so sadly we lost 2 lambs. Just before covid hit we had our white girl give birth to triplets again, without hassle, but we were shocked to find that 2 weeks later a fourth lamb had entered the scene without any signs and the lamb was even bigger than its cousins from the start. This was her last spring with us before going to another place. (sad me noices) She also was verry persistent and did not let 3 feet high fences stop her from getting a wee nible of fres grass from the other field without disterbance of her by then already grazing lambs. The white girl had cracking triplets in 2021 (with 2 yew lambs who currently hold up the fort) and cracking twins in 2022 and this year as well, although this year both of them died in the womb due to a backwards lamb, and its sibling didnt make it to the end of the day. 2 weeks later she passed away piecefully not recovering from the troumatic birth. At least im glad she didn't suffer any longer.

Now, at lambing time, what you need is a couple of teenaged girls with mothering instincts who want to feed (and feed, and feed!) the pet lambs that the number 3s and 4s will be. And also that some of the ewes with singles are very milky and willing to love an extra lamb.

Please tell Lizzie that bumps and bruises are to be expected! Little ones have to be falling. It's part of being a little guy. Congratulations on a great scan. It's lovely to see you growing. Those dogs!!! The ones that chased your sheep. Actually it's the owners. Maddening.

Time for an Alazin shot for Sky! You leave a door open for a second and this happens, good thing you were there when it happened instead of being suddenly surprised by it!

That’s great that you’ve got that high percentage like that and those cheap ones you got really that is super that you’ve got every single one of them bred.

Ewes are looking great Cam, awesome scan number but as you mentioned a few too many triplets, wee Jock looks great and out helping with the sheep already, brings back some great memories. All Ewe lambs that you bought in lamb is great, i get the selling with Lamb in May but getting lucky to buy them at such a good price originally maybe worth keeping for breeding ewes in the future and selling other older ewes in lamb instead ? i understand the business end but those lambs could be in your flock for a good few years...again just a thought.

We like the longer format as well, good job! Even though you explain the scanning really well, I still can't for the life of me figure out how you can count the amount of lambs... I can recognise the outline of the lambs as you point it out, but I cannot see when you move how you know that it's another lamb and not again the same one :D especially with these quads

Oh my goodness that percentage! It'll be a good year for the market if the prices are right. Are you ready for so many orphaned lambs this year, Cammy? Also, I can't wait to see how many are massive hogs!
