    The reason some tires are "stuck" in some of these AWD cars is because traction control is on. The car thinks its sliding, which it actually is and traction control is made to prevent just that by locking individual wheels to counter act the balance and keep the car straight. If you are stuck in snow disable your traction control, there should be a button in your car for that.

    @RKmndo

    @@cutebutsadisticable Good tires are no match for appropriate tires though. Newer all-seasons may not be a problem for getting unstuck, but they're dangerous for directional and stopping traction on icy hills where all-weather or winter tires should be the mandatory minimum, and studs or chains should be recommended. My concern isn't getting unstuck. I can often manage that by sprinkling sand or salt. My concern is being able to avoid collisions, hitting or being hit.

    This made me smile, as it brought back a funny story that my Mom used to LOVE telling! She was 80 yrs old & just passed away in May! I'm 57 now, but she always laughed about a time when I was 2-2 1/2 yrs old & we lived in Michigan; My parents & I got into the cab of the pickup truck, to go pick up my older brother; Dad was behind the wheel & I was standing in the middle of the seat between them (way before seatbelt/carseat laws!lol); There was a snowstorm the night before & the truck was stuck in the driveway; Dad had been messing with trying to move, until he was PIXXED!lol. Keep in mind, I was 2!lol. He was SLAMMING the transmission from reverse to drive, to reverse, to drive....and probably INVENTING new cuss words! I was standing there just watching; He stopped for a second, probably to try something else, when I looked over at him & said "Now, beat your head on the window! Maybe that will help." lmao Mom said all she could do was hold her breath, cuz she KNEW I'd be in BIG TROUBLE after THAT ONE! lol. (No, my dad NEVER laid a hand on me, so she was NEVER afraid of me being hurt or anything like that!); She said that my dad just BUSTED OUT LAUGHING!! He laughed so hard he had TEARS rolling down his cheeks to where he wouldn't have been able to try any other ways to free the truck, if he had even thought of them! lmao. As an adult, I always told her he couldn't have gotten MAD about it, because he KNOWS that US 3 kids (older brother, myself & younger sister), as well as all of OUR KIDS, got our ATTITUDES & WARPED SENSE OF HUMOR from HIS SIDE of the family! lol Anyway, THANK YOU FOR THE SMILE & WONDERFUL MEMORY! :)

    Good ideas!! If someone has recently remodeled, you can probably get pretty large pieces of carpeting (then cut however you want!) absolutely FREE!! If you have a lot of coupons, or are financially able to do so, buying a few bags of cheap KITTY LITTER to keep in the vehicle is ALSO good! Sawdust, sand, etc., the list is endless! Those bags/boxes of things in the vehicle (trunk) will ALSO add a little extra weight! A few cinder/concrete blocks works, too, but there's a danger of slamming into occupants, in case of an accident! :). HAPPY SLEDDING! lol

    Salt only works to 20 degrees, then you have to use calcium carbonate mixed with sand or cinders. I have never seen a salt spreader without a plow on it - sort of useless that way. When I worked in NY D.O.T. plowing snow, I switched between a motor grader and a 4wd Chevy C-60 with a "V"plow and wing plows. I used to get the Chevy up to 30mph and drop the wing plows and fill every driveway up. We didn't use skids on the plows, just rested them on the cutter bars to get a clean surface to spread salt or calcium carbonate, depending on the air temp. Never broke a truck, but I seen others blow hydraulic rams like they were toilet paper tubes, what a waste. They always had me plow State Route 104 along Lake Ontario from Pulteyville to Fulton. Long route, but great scenery in the Winter. GREAT OVERTIME!!!

Had to slow down workers plowing the street and another city trucked called off his rout to help. Not to mention the delays from the other cars. They should had just push the car that came down the wrong side further to the side and said figure it out buddy.

    Here’s a tip from a Colorado guy. Carry a 10 lb bag of the cheapest kitty litter (non clumping). It is usually the coarsest grain. If you get stuck on ice patch spread a little in front of your drive tires (2 or 4 wheel), then put car not in drive, but 1. Slowly give it gas keeping steering straight as allowed. Once you are going, move from 1 to 2 to drive. That way if you need to slow down, just take foot off gas and the engine slows you down evenly. As it get clearer, move to 3 then to D.

    Most people make the same mistake. They push the accelerator pedal too far. Better shift to 2nd gear, then drive off slowly and carefully. So far I have only driven cars with front wheel drive. I never had problems. In summer I drive with real summer tires and in winter with real winter tires. Whether Bridgestone, Continental or Good Year tires, I had good experiences with these three.

    That Subaru.... That was all driver error, and I suspect bad/bald tires played a big part in that fiasco too. Notice how the 2-wheel drive Lexus manages to get out (twice) but the AWD Subaru can't. This is a lack of winter driving skills on display here. I would have gotten that Subie out in less than 30 seconds. In fact I would have never even got it stuck in the first place. And furthermore this is why you always keep a shovel in the car so that -when- you get stuck you can shovel your way out.

    Once upon a time, when winters were more severe, EVERYONE went through the annual ritual of switching to proper tires. We got through in all but the worst weather. Then the government invested in all these trucks, salters, plows, etc. and told everyone to stop using those tires cuz they were bad for the roads. Now we all get stuck and the roads get destroyed anyway from the inside-out from all the salt.

  • @whitetrashgarage8110

    @@DR0CK There were lots of awd and a few 4wd vehicles in there. You're no hero not running snow tires. I myself ran all season tires for years, figured they were fine until I actually got a set of legit winter tires, HUGE difference between even cheap snow tires and the expensive all season tires I had (they were even winter rated all season tires). I have a 4wd truck with snows and now an AWD Impreza getting studded winter tires this year. Not because I'm some "amateur" driver that needs the help, but because I'm an experienced, knowledgeable driver that doesn't need the extra risk when I'm hours from any real town in the middle of the night in a blizzard, or when I need that extra traction from when some dumb ass with all seasons looses control and I have to give them room. Never been stuck means you've never really driven much. Grew up doing "hill billy" shit in old mud trucks, drove professionally for a few years, I'm a pretty decent race car driver and I still put the best tires possible on my vehicles in the winter.

    You don't just step on the gas for front wheel drive in snow. When it slips, it's because your front wheels are not making contact with the road. So step on the gas, lower gear, and turning left and right to kick the snow out of the the way, until your wheels make contact with the actual road for traction. Of course you can go between forward and backward, using the same technique, if you are stuck. And most of the time it should help. Lol
