This movie makes so much more sense when you see it as a weed-and-bowling parody of the film noir, hardboiled detective movie genres from the 1930s and 40s, think movies like The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, and others starring Humphrey Bogart. It’s got all the tropes from that genre, like mysterious kidnapping, ransom money in a big suitcase, double crosses, a Femme Fatale, and a mystery that our hero detective is caught up in - except instead of hero detective with a suit and 1940s fedora, it’s The Dude with his sweater.

37:38 "This was a huge star-studded cast" ... "In '98, it really wasn't." Bro, what are you talking about? By 1998, most of these actors were HUGE in the industry: Jeff Bridges was a 3-time Oscar nominee by '98. John Goodman was huge from "Roseanne", "Arachnophobia", "The Babe", "The Flintstones" movies and other Coen Bros films. Steve Buscemi was big from Coen Bros' movies like "Fargo", "Miller's Crossing", "Barton Fink" and from Tarantino movies, Adam Sandler movies and Jim Jarmusch movies. Julianne Moore was an Oscar nominee by this time for "Boogie Nights". She was also hot off "The Fugitive", "Short Cuts", and "Jurassic Park 2". John Turturro was huge from Spike Lee and Coen Bros' movies and "Quiz Show". Sam Elliott was a character actor from big movies like "Lifeguard", "Mask", "Road House", "Gettysburg" and "Tombstone". Peter Stomare is not an A-lister by any means but he had just come off "Fargo" and "Jurassic Park 2" at the time. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was on the rise, sure, after "Twister" and "Boogie Nights" and went onto much bigger things. The only one I can give ya is Tara Reid-- she was just starting out, for sure.

I gotta say, ''Fargo'' is their masterpiece, and I thought they could never top this one, but they did with ''No Country For Old Men'' which is their best movie. But ''The Big Lebowski'' is imo their most funniest movie, 2nd is ''Raising Arizona'', but again, my most favorite Joel & Ethan Coen movie is ''Miller's Crossing'', and it still is.

In 1996 i was upwardly mobile and career focused, by 2000 i opted out of the rat race. I found a simple, but much happier life and my next jobs were just a thing i did to support a truly downsized life. I realized both big lebowski and Office Space came out just prior to my opt out and now i wonder how much these movies i loved may have influenced my mindset back then. Freeing yourself of your "stuff" is scary until you do it, but is so liberating once done.

My favorite story around this movie is about the song that plays at the end. It’s Townes Van Zandt’s cover of “Dead Flowers” by The Rolling Stones. The story goes that the producers asked for permission to use the song, and the Stones guy didn’t want to, he said “no, I don’t want to deal with this, find another song”. The producers said “we really want to use it, it’s perfect, we already have it in the movie, but we can’t release it without your permission”. So they arranged a screening for the Stones’ rep. It gets to the part, long before the song in question, where the Dude is in the car, after having been roughed up by the Malibu police, and says “I hate the fuckin’ Eagles, man”. The Stones guy jumps up and say “ok, you can have the song”. Don’t know if that’s true, but it’s a great story.

The script, the actors & the chemistry they share, the musical score.....you're just NEVER gonna top it, so don't even try.
