The good thing about cycling infrastructure is that you don't have to follow existing roads or use already built junctions for cars. In stead: create shortcuts across the roads (underneath or over) and create faster routes from a to b.

It would be interesting to see a city design with walking paths and cycling, as well as public transport as the main thing and regular car lanes built around it, instead of adding in bike lanes after the fact - wonder if that is even possible.

It would be a hard road mentally too, with no real defining features. My daily cycle to school wasn't long (7km) but it was varied. 1km in? A bend. 2km? A little wooded area. 3km, the next village. Etc, etc. If the weather's terrible and you've just got to power through, being able to tick off how far you've come helps a ton. "Straight on as far as the eye can see"... my condolences. This just treats cycle traffic the exact same way as car traffic, and it simply doesn't work like that. Oh, I love that build so much ... 21:59 Heather seems to come from the IT- or rather Eye Tea district - and if you are following the route until 22:22 this is actually a horseshoe-shaped route. If you are not exploiting the overpowered cycling in the game's algorithm there should definitely be additional shorter connections. Combine the Heather route with your thoughts 24:20 - 24:40 ... I really disagree here: Giving cars access to the actual highway takes a lot of space because you need proper junctions. Access to the bicycle highway is far less complicated and takes a lot less space. And there are hundreds or thousands of non-Heathers and almost-Heathers - for them additional points of access can make a serious difference and their routing algorithm might decide that cycling is better if just a few bike path connections are added. You can seriously attack road traffic if you exploit its weaknesses and add targeted bike connections where regular highway connections are not possible.

Having bike highway in the middle of a car highway obviously wouldn't function in the real world, but since this is a game I have no problem with that. I think it's a clever idea ;) I would just point out that you don't really need to change the nicer looking bridges over the highway to have bike lanes, since you have plenty of other ways to get on and off of the bike highway which also function as a bridge over the highway.

The Seattle, WA area has two highway bridges with parallel bike/pedestrian trails. SR520 and I90 floating bridges across lake Washington. Both are on the north side of the highway. I90 doesn't have great noise suppression between the traffic and the trail and it is absolutely nerve racking to ride on. The SR520 path is newish and I've not ridden on it, but has a full sound barrier wall between traffic and trail users.

I haven't done a Bike express down a Freeway/highway like that, but I have done one outside of highways on both sides and some highway to arterial interchanges, where the highway is above the road, the bike lane connects with a bike friendly avenue, but also have bike lanes connecting to other side of highway, so if a cyclest wanted could ride the side of highway one direction, and come back the other. But I use the center of my highways with Tram tracks, to connect my Tram Depot to various Tram zones around my city, and every highway interchange with roadway over/under pass, the Tram track in the middle balances out with the roadway mentioned, crossing through it, and continues up the middle of the highway, but crossing the main street at the highway, it will also have a Tram/road link, so the Tram taking the highway expressway up the middle, can turn off at any major interchange if the Tram is working that zone... All to explain! Your Bicycle expressway up the middle of the highway, instead of staying below the bridges, can come up and balance with the roadway, which can have a Bike friendly roadway, to turn or continue down the expressway. If a bicyclist only travels at 5-10 MPH max (I'm American, idk KPH), slowing down for a few interactions won't hurt them as much. It might hurt surrounding traffic maybe, but maybe bicyclist lights can be in unison with the interchange lights at the intersection. ANOTHER IDEA... If the Bicycle expressway up the middle of the highway is 4-5 M high... Then keeping the expressway under the interchange passes, a few m before the overpass, maybe a branch pike path break right where the highway exit for highway traffic is, the break path from the expressway will stay above the highway, and then run parallel with the Exit ramp, and meet at the intersection where the ramp goes, and again having a bike friendly overpass, the bike lane integrates with an existing intersection, without the main Bicycle expressway interfering with anything else. Again. Just my thoughts.

This sounds like how most cities do anything except cars. "Well we have cars here and bicycles can go around these huge extra ways". Instead of maybe cutting a bit out from parking spaces in very central location...

There is a setting in the NMT options to ensure that parallel networks you add will connect to the nodes at either end when adding a new one so you do not have to go back and use the union tool each time. It should work for similar networks... though I had it work for roads, but not so well with quays.

But when you get close you see the nodes have the appearance of being placed by a drunk clown on a bender, wearing a blind fold, while riding a unicycle, following instructions being yelled at him in Cantonese, while being vigorously slapped with a medium sized wet cod.

Biffa, @16:53, You can place the Monorail track over the 2-lane bike road, delete the original pillars, and replace them with wide ones (download asset from Stream). This is all inspired by imperatur who does this all the time in a lot of his builds. I think he builds rails over the top in 7mm increments to eliminate the pillars and adds his own.

You should build a express-tunnel through the islands and the mountain. You don't have such a highway because it would smash your traffic, but with bike-lanes you have nothig to care about and it dosen't matter that you can't see them because you don't get any traffic-jams anyway.

I know for me, whenever I make path networks like this, I tend to think of the realistic cost. Nowhere that I know of has floating paths all over the place. The occasional bridge sure, but not long continuous paths tens of meters off the ground going for kilometers. I try to keep things close to the ground and if I have to go elevated, keep the slopes realistic and keep the elevated part as short as it can be. That's just me of course, this is a game, go nuts.

Bike lanes mess with parking, I bet inhabitants struggle more for parking at some spots. And city is still bloody lacking in beaches. A "pebbled" beach for stone skipping could be nice as well. Also I'd build a "sportea" park with bike ring, where people can go in for sports if they wish. Volcano fits nicely for mounting bike and hiking. More pristine, wilder park or woods, where they can pick up mushrooms or berries also seems to be a good idea. Happy New Year!! Upd. I've noticed a cape at 31:46, with a few props and some extra pebbles that will be stone skipping beach. Kids could try to throw pebbles through the wind turbine, isn't it fun?))))

Now that's a creative solution; I'm not sure the average cycler would take that path in real life; granted, it's safe, but the sound of those cars and trucks right below you... maybe a utilitarian cycler might take the path, but recreational one definitely wouldn't. And as for main four lane fast speed through roads with a bicycle gutter... forget about it, only cyclists will go on that thing. Also, if you want to do those roundabouts right, the bicycles should have right of way on the roundabout from cars both going in and out, and thus the bicycle gutter should be continuous all the way along, use your interchange marking tool to make it all the way around, and thus the marking tool contain shark tooth? Triangles? Give way sign painted on the road? They should be on the road on either side of the bicycle lane. If you're wondering what the difference between a cylcer and cyclist is; a cycler is a person who checks the route, what is the fastest and most convenient and if it's the bike, they'll take the bike, if it's not the bike they won't take the bike. Basically they're a cycler only when they are on the bicycle. A cyclist is someone who will bike come hell or high water, safety be damned even if kills them they will cycle. PS: Biffa, I have been suspecting something for a time now, and I went back and checked; you never hooked your damn into the grid, no power lines anywhere; result is that power isn't added to your city power.
