The Bibbulmun Track - Part Nine - Pemberton to Schafer

Part Nine: Pemberton to Schafer. What comes up, must come down.
Caroline leaves Pemberton feeling fatigued, irritable and sensitive. She struggles to be inspired by the nature around her, but it maybe it's because the experiences on the outside, reflect the deeper feelings inside.
We've all know that feeling of not having our s#%t together. Not feeling like we are 'enough'. Things feel harder and more vulnerable. And that's ok. We are only human beings after all, perfectly imperfect and each with our emotional outlets. Perhaps being in nature helps us to express whatever it is we need to express.
Here's to riding that wave.
This series will show you what it’s like to thru-hike the 1002 km (623 mile) Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia. Watch the entire series as we release them here: • The Bibbulmun Track Se...

"Hiking doesn't create difficult emotions - it just reveals what is already there and allows time and space for them to rise up and inform life" I love the rawness of this episode. I acknowledge the courage it took to show your vulnerabilities 🙏

Dookanelly is where I had my wobble. All perfectly normal and healthy. Let it out. These films are bringing back such lovely memories of my end to end in 2013, still recognising sections in your journey, the odd tree, bend, hill.. love it.

That's right. It shouldn't be held in but let out, like a pressure valve. It's normal on the trail, and we believe should be encouraged. One of the many, many benefits of thru-hiking the bib.

While initially this was difficult to watch compared to your other Bibbulmin updates, I want to say that I really appreciate your honesty and rawness of this video. I really wanted to just reach into the screen and give you a big hug and let you know everything will be ok when you were so distressed. I hope you were able to find peace upon returning home.

We wanted to show it's normal to go through a range of emotions on these journeys and not to have that shock or discourage people who may not have been expecting it. As several hikers both on YT and on the trail revealed, they too cry and go through a range of emotions, with the time, solitude and environment perfect for 'letting it out'. It's cathartic and encouraged.

Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate it :) It’s interesting how our world is used to smiles and good times, but we aren’t as experienced for the darker times. At first I was very resistant to share this side of me, but I also knew how important it was to show that we all have our ups and downs, no one has their s&$t together all the time. Life can get messy and that’s totally ok. I felt a sense of peace after my big cry and got good hugs when I arrived at Schafer!

Thanks for sharing! I almost had to fast forward when Caroline was suffering, but in the end it gave me a great understanding of the range of emotions that a person goes through on the track. I also will resist having big meals at rest towns I think.

Another wonderful episode. One of the beautiful things about the track is that there is minimal distraction. It gives a real chance to meet ourselves head on. Congratulations on yet another brilliant episode.

Thanks for sharing such an intensely personal experience with us. I'm sure there must have been a temptation to edit it out, but I applaud your decision to leave it in. Incredibly brave film-making. We're all riding that wave together, and sharing this will hopefully erase some of the stigma of letting our feelings show. Vulnerability is just part of what makes us human. Thanks again, Caroline and Steve!

Thanks so much Mike, oh gosh you wouldn’t believe how much resistance I had - especially being filmed! But long before we started the walk, we agreed about the importance of capturing all emotions as they came - beauty, laughter, tears and drama. This is the real thing. Thank you for seeing me.

I got into Schafer at midday, the little thermometer on the wall said it was 4 degrees C. So I had lunch and pushed through to Warren. Got there after dark, thick fog and full moon late May. It just had such a medieval feel that night. Had to be the coldest night during my end-ender. Another great honest video. Making me want to endure all the pain and go again 🤦‍♂️👍

Thank you very much for sharing your hiking experiences, the complete range of emotions you experienced and talking about how you were feeling. It was enjoyable to see your high points, but equally important to see the low points - a little confronting initially to see you crying Caroline in such beautiful surroundings, although reassuring to realise that we all have some bad times which we struggle through, certainly no one is perfect and we should all really try to be as honest as you were in sharing difficult emotions. I enjoyed climbing the Gloucester Tree in 1995, seeing you climb brought back great memories and a desire to climb it again!

Great episode! We uhhh enjoyed your pain :P Only kidding of course, I think that "letting it all out" is actually great, and all part of the transformatory journey of such a big endeavour, no doubt you agree!

Thank you Caroline and Steve, I am watching your videos and it inspired me to do the overland track in May this year which is now behind me. I am personally dealing with complex PTSD and your videos has really helped. Please don't stop, you are both amazing.

Ive binge watched the series upto this point, loved every minute of it. It was tough to see Caroline so upset, but Im sure all the viewers are cheering you on - even though we know in real life you finished the trail ages ago.

It all seems a go a bit pearshaped after rest days. Personally I only use towns for restocking early in the morning, walk 5km, camp in a nice spot, and eat as much as possible during the afternoon while having a bottle of wine.

I'm binge-watching these and I love that you kept these scenes in. I'm only a beginner overnight hiker at 52 and a bit overweight. I have so many of those moments - they are real! And I think you don't do your achievements justice - punching out those kms, day after day. Shit, I'd be pretty exhausted and emotional too!

binge watching your videos , I just had to go back and like all the ones I forgot to like . Caroline I was wondering if you think that the big heavy meals that you eat at the rest stops impacts your sleeping because of digestion and then your moods for the next day ? well just got quarter way through the vid and you said yep its the pizza ! I know that would do it for me too . Thanks for being so real Ive been enjoying watching your journey and think you are really inspiring x

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion but why not edit the swearing I wanted to watch this with my kids to get inspired to do the track but now I can't show them this video. I understand this is hard and emotional and I don't say you can't swear but most you tubers will edit the swearing for young ones

Thankyou for the feedback. While there isn't much, that's a valid concern and is an oversight we'll certainly keep in mind for future videos, which are in the works. We didn't realise the interest in the videos from the younger ones or parents wishing to inspire.
