The Bhola Cyclone: The Storm that Almost Started a Nuclear War
In a matter of minutes, the raging waves had engulfed much of the island.
Hai was only 18, but with his father away from home, he was responsible for the lives of his 20 extended family members, huddled on the first floor of their small brick house. The water had already flooded the ground floor and was quickly rising.
Braving the impetuous winds and downpour of rain, he climbed onto the tin roof, but he realized it was too flimsy to withstand the weight of his entire family.
Desperate for a solution, he thought about a nearby, study palm tree, which he knew had weathered several storms in the past. If he and his family could find refuge on the tree, they could resist for a few hours until the cyclone died down.
Guessing at the position of the tree, Hai leapt into the darkness.

Hello, author of the original article here. Just popped in to say that Karl did a great job in bringing this story to life. Much of the word count was taken by figures and names, to say nothing of the complicated chain of consequences leading from the flawed warning system to the brink of nuclear war. But Karl’s delivery was riveting, equally tense and enjoyable. Keep up the good work!

Excellent video! Riveting from start to finish. And terrifying. I hadn't heard of this cyclone before and the lead-up to the creation of Bengladesh, so I definitely learned a lot today.
Interesting channel Karl 👍

I Couldn't imagine anyone else other than Simon doing these presentations Carl, however you have done an amazing job!!! SIMON WHO!!!? 🤣
I am currently doing my doctoral research on this topic. I am investigating the role of various actors in setting a new level of disaster politics right after the Bhola cyclone. The cyclone created a domino effect that ultimately led to the birth of a new nation, first time in human history. Fascinating!
hello from Australia!
Man, I didn't know about this at all. I was aware of the East/West Pakistan thing and that they split after a brief war, but nothing about this cyclone. Fascinating stuff.

Not sure if he's just slowed down from when he started, or I'm getting used to his speech pattern, but I quite like his presentations of late.
The Middle East, a place where races, religions, and continents come together to form one thing: conflict. It’s been like this for centuries and I don’t see any end to these conflicts.
The central government's handling of the relief effforts helped exacerbate the bitterness felt in East Pakistan, swelling the resistance movement there. Funds only slowly got through, and transport was slow in bringing to the devastated regions. As tensions increased in March 1971, foreign personnel evacuated of fears of violence. The situation deteriorated further and evolved into the Bangladesh Liberation War, which led to the 1971 Bangladesh Genocide.

And I'm not saying that he put a picture of his real mom up or anything but there is a semi famous painting called "Whistler's Mother" and i think it would just be funny and cool if it were to be in the back ground on some of Simon's current and/or former channels. No disrespect intended towards the new host or Simon and definitely not Simon's mother. And this could still be the cause of a nuclear war, the US's participation in the conflict was a major factor in India developing their own nuclear weapons, which then prompted Pakistan to also develop nukes. And given Modi's government's increasing nationalism, and Pakistan's continuing instability, it's not a great situation.

Smallwood, Arnoldo ... I fail to see how this big "standoff" almost started a nuclear war and why this isn't really clickbait bullshit. No ultimatums, no warnings, no threats ... just some ships within a few hundred miles of each other. But this isn't why I gave it a dislike. No, that was for the snarky US reference and bullshit cheapshot at Kissinger. If you want to be a channel with any kind of historical significance, you can stop that.
Bring Simon Back for Geographics and Biographics. He pioneered these, there are enough Side Projects or Channels to get some substitute teachers.
