The Beth Chatto Symposium: Cassian Schmidt Stylized Dynamic Plantings

The Beth Chatto Symposium was hosted in support of the Beth Chatto Education Trust. Donate - www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...
Cassian Schmidt, Director, Hermannshof Garden and Professor, Hochschule Geisenheim University, Germany
The research at Hermannshof trial gardens includes plant ecology and performance and the coexistence of plants in designed plant communities. Stylized North American prairie and Eastern European steppe vegetation as well as Mediterranean shrub steppe have been modified and enhanced for aesthetic and practical demands. Cassian Schmidt will share economic yet ecologically based planting and maintenance techniques that do not sacrifice aesthetic qualities, making them extremely useful for sustainable public greening projects.

I thought the New German Style was also the Foerster and Oehme Approach. I often make jokes about this 100 year old "New" style

Well, they were naturalistic style plantsmen and designers but of two earlier generations. So they are naturalistic, yes, but new? Not so much. Foerster was the great pioneer post WW2 and one of his disciples, Wolfgang Oehme called his approach (with Van Sweden) The New American Garden in the 1970s. What Cassian is doing builds upon the earlier work but it's perhaps more sophisticated and ecologically aware with a greater emphasis on the role of maintenance.
