    this was 1 of my favourite games as a kid. the Jin'Ha swamp has an entire area with like 30 or more enemies you encounter after a waterfall near the end. i just ran around grouping them up into an army then Qui-Gon and i demolished them at the waterfall. glorious. Maul was always so hard because as a kid the idea of circling never occured to me. the number of times i got force pushed into the hole Canon style or off the bridge will never escape my top 10 most frustrating fights. getting to fight the ENTIRE council bar Yoda was the best experience. you'd always end up fighting the weirdest character in a 1v1 after everyone else was dead. i got Depa Billiba once and i just thought HOW? how are you alive? if they remastered this game i'd happily pay $60 for it. hell get Ewan and Neeson to voice this time and bam massive success

  • @m1sterF0x

    @m1sterF0x

    5 ай бұрын

    @@Flandrew very different - the PC game was meant to be a spiritual successor to the popular Jedi Knight series. Multiplayer was going to be a huge component. We also had quite extensive plans for the "Historical Missions" that detailed Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's assignments before the events of Phantom Menace. These were going to be co-op as well! (Some of the historical missions lived on in the X-Box version, sort of.) The analog-stick control scheme came about because of a planned mouse-driven glyph system for initiating different lightsaber moves... but that never really came together satisfactorily. The X-Box team did a good job slimming down a wildly ambitious design into a console version they could ship-- but it was still a pretty wacky Frankenstein monster. And you noted plenty of the bananas stuff in the game-- which really made me laugh.

    I only played this for the first time about a year ago when I got a modded Xbox with most of the OG Xbox library pre-installed, and definitely have to agree with you. I actually really enjoy it, despite it being super hard to objectively recommend, lol. It certainly captures that old-school Jedi Knight feel in lots of places though, with the low-poly recreations of those Star Wars environments echoing attempts in games like JK, Jedi Power Battles and Shadows to the Empire (both of which, even at the time, mostly looked like a cubist abstraction of the reality, right?) and the general movement and the feel of the lightsabers in terms of leaving scorch marks on walls and slicing through people, as janky as it was to actually control the thing. You're right, there is a load of charm in Star Wars games like this. I also think it's interesting that there was _another_ Xbox launch title _FROM ACTUALY JEDI KNIGHT DEVS_ called New Legends that is *completely* forgotten nowadays and not just because it lacked the Star Wars license. Those devs, Infinite Machine, were ex-Jedi Knight developers but man, they really bungled that one (obviously; they never made another game) and their whole game performs terribly and doesn't feel like ANYTHING with wimpy, feckless combat and large, empty areas... whereas the newer LucasArts hires who put together Obi Wan actually make it _sort of_ feel like a Jedi Knight title at least.

There's also a second Wookie on the lower level in the alleys and if you save him from the gang members he too will follow you to the level's end. My favorite thing to do was wait on the train platform at the end of the first level and use force push to throw the gang members onto the smokestacks because they would catch fire if they landed on top. We actually had a lot of fun with this game. Not so much in the single player, but I had some friends over to play the multiplayer and we had a good time with it. Unfortunately, you had to make some unofficial rules. Ki Adi Mundi had this HUGE pool of force power so he could throw you all over the arenas and characters like Eeth Koth were just tanky so we ended up doing mirror matches most of the time. Conehead battles with Ki Adi Mundi were the order of the day most of the time so we could blast each other with Force Push trying to get a win by sending each other down the big pit in the Naboo arena.

    Honestly, you missed a number of features. There's an ability to go slow-mo, there's lower strikes, power strikes, overhead power jump to overhead strike, and there's even an auto target feature which allows you to focus less on camera angle and more on who you are targeting. I think a lot of people didn't really look at what you can do in the controls of this game 🤷‍♂

    This was the first Star Wars game I ever got into apart from the OG Battlefront. I played this game night and day. My dad actually really liked watching me play because he found it so funny in its ridiculousness. For that alone it will always be a nostalgic bright spot for me

    I believe the bit about the queen getting kidnapped is actually from the phantom menace tie-in comics

    If the decoy Queen (who was probably one of Padme's trusted handmaidens) had actually been kidnapped by Tuskens, then I can understand why Padme would have been quick to forgive Anakin for killing the ones who kidnapped his mom lol.

    I remember loving this game, am I losing it or did it have a multiplayer 1v1 mode where you could play as the other jedi?

    I have no idea how many hours I devoted to playing this game. I named my files Aragorn, Zorro, Lancelot, Maximus, Guts, etc. I cut through sooo many enemies and finished it countless times. I love this game still.

    This, Battlefront 1 & 2, and clone wars were the Star Wars games of my childhood. Very fun to play and hope at some point obi-wan becomes back compat with the other games.

    when I first played Mount and Blade Warband my brain immediately flashed back to playing Obi-Wan because of how you can directionally input your swings and the way the counter system works.

    Makes sense because players would riot if they learn they wasted hours in that level to escort a handmaid

    I remember back in 2001 it was actually this game that made me want an Xbox rather than Halo. I got a GameCube that Christmas instead because I am a bigger Nintendo fan overall and didn’t want to pass up Smash Bros Melee, Luigi’s Mansion, and Pikmin, but hey I did get Rogue Squadron 2 so I still got my Star Wars video game fix. A shame this isn’t compatible with the Series X like so many other Star Wars games released on the OG Xbox, even with its jank I’d still love to experience what I missed out on all those years ago.

    I discovered this game at a demo kiosk at a circuit city or Best Buy when I was a child. I instantly fell in love with the analog lightsaber controls. I haven't played this game since it was current and I have deeply fond memories of playing it over and over again. Unlike you however, Darth Maul gave me total hell. I had to run around the room, spamming lightsaber throw while dodging all of his attacks. I'd love to play it again, despite knowing all of it's flaws.
