The Best Winter Jeep Gladiator in the Rocky Mountains with Helltraxx

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We tried to get this custom Jeep with tracks stuck in 6 ft of fresh snow. We failed. This Jeep doesn't get stuck off-road.
I spent the weekend in the mountains of Colorado going off-road up to 11,000 ft elevation in the middle of winter. This new product that we tested hasn't even hit the market. Coming later this year from helltraxx.com, a game changer for back country adventure. This pair is perfectly with the Ski Doo snowmobile’s that we took up into the Colorado mountains with us.
I challenge anyone to find a more capable off-road vehicle. If I'm wrong, let me know down in the comments.

I have tracks for both a Can Am and Polaris ATV. Trust me...As fun as they are, and as great as it is to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle go deep into snow, they are no match for a snowmobile, not even close. The same applies to this Jeep. The snow shown here is only a little powder on top of a well consolidated base - ideal for the Jeep, but not representative of derp powder conditions. There may have been on 6 feet of snow, but not more than ~ 12" -18" of warm, consolidated powder. The freshness and lightness of powder makes a HUGE difference in mobility. By the time there's 2 feet of FRESH powder, the Jeep will bog. By the time there's 3 feet of FRESH powder, even the snowmobiles may be stopped. (I've helped extricate sleds in those conditions.) Another glaring weakness for 4 wheel drive vehicles is side slopes. The snowmobile can lean their sled into the hill so that relative to the fall line, the track remains horizontal. But a 4wd cannot do this. This makes a huge difference. The detrimental effect is then compounded because the steeper the side slope, the more the vehicle's weight transfers to the downhill track, causing the downhill track to sink even deeper, risking rollover. Additionally, while the front can be steered in an effort to traverse a slide slope, the rear cannot (barring 4 wheel steering). Consequently, the rear of the vehicle slips downhill. This results in the front and rear tracks being aligned at dramatically different angles, essentially fighting one another.

It’s going to be only for custom builds at first, since the suspension needs to be adjusted accordingly.

EXTREMELY expensive. Stock tracks (single width) for a Jeep are over $20,000. But the tracks shown here are double width. I've never even seen an advertisement for double wide tracks. They may be custom. At a minimum, I'd guess these tracks cost ~$35,000. I've run tracks on ATVs since early 2007. They're a lot of fun. But they're capability is not remotely close to that of a snowmobile, are further hampered when the powder gets deep (where maintaining speed is king), and unless the snow is well consolidated, are even more limited when one tries to traverse a side slope more than ~15 degrees.

Yes, it is made of premium components. This Jeep product is going to be a light duty replacement for something like a Comercial-Grade Snow Cat. Compared to one of those, this will be a bargain. We were just testing out this with fresh powder snow. It performed amazing.

I agree. No way that was 6 feet of fresh powder, or even more than 18". Even simply attempting to stand on 6 feet of fresh powder would leave you at least chest deep. I've snowshoed in 3+ feet of fresh powder. It was a bitch, and that's despite having a much lower per-square-foot snow loading than that of a snowmobile, let alone a Jeep. One needs to quantify what 'fresh powder' really means, or at least experience it first hand. In this video, every snowmobile and Jeep track, as well as every time someone stands, definitively reveals a veneer of fairly warm, consolidated powder on top of a thicker base of well consolidated/compacted snow.
