Let's face it your scuba kit is pretty important to you and if you look after it, it will look after you. Scuba gear is made to be quite tough and put up with plenty of abuse in the water but you do have to look after it after your dive. If you don’t look after your gear and just throw it in the shed between dives they are going to get ripe fast and it’ll soon start malfunctioning.

    Biggest mistake that people make is which room they store it in. Keep in in the garage and the car fumes will destroy the rubber. Same for a storage room in the basement with a fridge or freezer in it or in a room with fluorescent lights that are on all the time. The neoprene sort of melts and becomes sticky or your dry suit wrists and neck can split or get holes in. This can happen in only 18 months

    I always clean my gear right after every dive and it's best to hang it up in the shower when you are on vacation after the shower and it has moisture hang it outside I would tell everyone that dives frequently to invest in a Cressi Strong bag... and I say not the cheap one but the one with the rollers.. that is the best place to store your gear properly..Thanks Mark ..PADI CERTIFIED!!

    I think the fresh water springs I dive in are cleaner than my well water. So I just clean the gear that touches my skin after those dives, everything else is just dried.

    True, but they still have bacteria and other critters living in it. Not as critical as salt water but still needs to be cleaned.

    I live on a sailboat. I store al of my gear in plastic tybs inside the boat after they're dry. I normally store my regulators with the hoses gentley curled up making sure they arent kinked. I don't really have a way to hang them. Might have to look at changing that. Storage space is always an issue on a boat.

    I have a closet dedicated just for scuba gear; everything hangs up in there, door closed, with a bucket of Damp Rid on the floor. Generally I wash everything in the shower, just easier that way. Mad props to Zeagle and their unscrewable BC inflator thingie that lets you screw a garden hose to it to rinse out the inside. Squirt a little dish soap in there, hook up the hose, and power wash the funk out of it. But how best to dry the inside of a BC? I'm thinking take the dump valves off and connect some sort of air blower to the inflator threads...

    I dive twice a week. I give it a rinse after every dive but by the time it dries, it's time for another dive so it basically stays outside 24/7.

    Good topic Mark- okay I am fanatical about keeping my gear clean. After all, a good percentage of the fun is the kit! After diving is done prior to storage I hang my bcd, dry suit, weight belt, bags, & smb’s on hangers off the branches of the tree in my garden (yes wash the bags too). I thoroughly hose it all down with water then spray all over with dilute scented Dettol to kill the bacteria. The accessories get the same treatment. I let all that soak for a while, then hose off again with clean water. I put diluted Dettol inside the bcd too & flush out. All the big stuff then goes in the shed overnight; the accessories get dried off with a towel & left to dry in the spare bedroom on towels. Once hand dry from the shed, kit comes in to room temperature in the bedroom, & some bits go in the airing cupboard over night (good, gloves, etc). I check all my kit over before storage in a Oceanic Gear Gulper, the OThree goes back in the bag. (Misses washes all under garments ) I wax the zip with the paraffin based stuff is much better than bees wax. I have used this method for years & works well. Nothing stinks up, all smells like fresh new.

    When you say regulators should be pressurized, does it mean I should submerge it with a tank in a pool of fresh water and scrub it?

  • @jwj500

    @jwj500

    5 жыл бұрын

    No, what he means is to keep the tank pressure and let it soak in a warm water solution. I just make sure my dusk cap is on well and soak the entire 1st and 2nd stage.

    @@jwj500 how do you remove the first stage from the tank without depressurizing?

  • @jwj500

    @jwj500

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@elwizo Reg is not connected to tank. No pressure. Just make sure your dust cap is on tight so water will not penetrate first stage. Then soak entire reg. Typically, I soak entire reg and then take the first stage out and let the second stage soak longer. Never soak first stage without dust cap on securely and never push the purge valve when not pressurized and under water, (soaking).

    @@jwj500 Thank you for clarifying. I've been using rental gear all the time and only soak the second stages. I have the dust cap on but the first stage still out of the water and let the center clean it when I'm done using it. Now I am considering buying my own. That was helpful

    @@elwizo Just remember, the dust cap is just that, a dust cap. It's not meant to keep water out, only dust. I keep the first stage out of the water, but submerge the second stages.

    Do I drain my tank? How do you store a tank for the winter?

  • @colelawton4901

    @colelawton4901

    Tanks are best left full or least pressurized, stored in a not-hot temperature. Cold temperatures will condense the gas contained, so you do not want to store it empty especially in cold weather. Empty tanks are also more susceptible to atmosphere air (which has moisture and is not dry like the air/gas in the tank) and that can cause rust inside the tank.
