Dispel is a one-mana way to deal with Cyclonic Rift as well as any other instants (countermagic, targeted removal, etc.) so it won't be a dead card. Red Elemental Blast and Pyroblast also only cost one mana and can give access to answers to decks not running blue. They can also destroy blue permanents so you're not just limited to countering spells.

I play a lot of Naya, so REB and Pyroblast are my go-to cards for dealing with Rift and Villainous Wealth, as well as the occasional pesky kraken and such.

Specially when someone tried rift at the other players end step for finishing the game attacking on their turn... that way the one playing rift undoubtedly ends up discarding some cards at their end step

@@TheMystcast that highly depends on your playgroup, too low powerlevel and few c rifts running around, too high powerlevel and very few overloaded c rifts running around.

One of my favorite "kind of counterspells" - Narsets Reversal - always gives chills when i get to Rift all my opponents...for 2 Mana :D

Someone Narset's reversal'd my Praetor's Counsul and countered it the turn after when I tried to recast it. Wasn't a big fan of that level of salt lol

I love this list, but just imo I’d replace reverberate for dualcaster mage. You still get the copy, and dualcaster goes back to your hand for a future use!

This video goes perfect with a cup of hot cocoa, because learning how to counter C-Rift in creative ways is a cozy feeling.

Ah yes how to deal with Cyclonic Rift, “Be blue” essentially lmao. Only 3 of the answers weren’t blue.

Chimera Rift is actually my backup plan for my opponents cyclonic rift in my Azorius control.

Shhhh, Mitch. Don't tell them. Please. "No one ever casts it like that" About four games and an end of the world ago, I did. It bounced a Collector Ouphe that was preventing me from comboing off with Dramatic Scepter.

Nice video Mitch. I added all these cards to my list so I can use then for future reference. I think it's important to have a answer for rift in a commander deck(3 would be better) since it's a god damn staple on pretty much any deck that uses blue.

I'm not gonna lie - I love beating Cyclonic Rift. It's amazing to have someone cast it on you, thinking they weren't going to die that turn...but you kill them anyway. It's not that good of a card, bring it on blue! To answer the question, it's not that hard to beat it, but does require some things. A way to generate a ton of mana and haste will do it.

Yes, there are definitely ways around it, or to beat it! That's why I don't have a problem with it. That, and I don't see it much. If you know you're going to see it, though, there are many ways around it while synergizing with your deck.

I got two out of a booster box when Return to Ravnica was new. One of which is foil. Looking at the price for them now, those two alone almost make up the cost of the box I bought them in.

Nice choices. One that didn't get mentioned was Didn't Say Please. For 1 Mana more than Counterspell you can in addition force him to mill 3. And it's even cheaper IIRC.

Counterspell is great, but I think many people overlook many other effective counters, too, like Dispel, Spell Pierce, and Mana Leak. They can cost less, and the downsides won't typically matter. Plus, they're still excellent protection against much of your opponents' interaction in general!

Timestop is one of my faves. Stops eldrazi casting abilities, maelstrom wanderer cascade triggers, and anything else that cant be countered or is just hard to counter.

You brought up a lot of reactive cards, perhaps precautionary answers like Nevermore and Praetor’s Grasp could be considered? And green could definitely try Seedtime.

I like foil, which is an instant for 4 Mana, it counters a spell, but you can discard an island and another card to cast it, I use it on decks that always have a ton of cards in hand so it is really useful there

The ''problem" with rift is that a lot of people use it just before they plan to win. If you just use it as an instant speed bounce wipe with the sole purpose of cleaning the board up a bit it is really just a fair card. They will play half their board again next turn. Because of the usual way of playing it people hate it

Teferis protection is great, and is currently in print in mystery booster. A great set.

I play Kadena in EDH now so it was funny to watch list thing how Aethersnatch was going to be mentioned knowing that we have several morph counter cards include Kheru Spellsnatcher lol.

In Boros colors, I like Legion's Initiative: 2-drop anthem that can protect ur creatures, and returns them in time to block at the next combat step (and also triggers etbs).

Teferi's Protection. Cannot bounce phased cards. Very helpful if you have a token army.

In my playgroup, lots of people play No max hand size cards like Reliquary Tower so that this is less of a setback. Graveyard based decks can just discard to hand size then resurrect everything important later making Cyclonic Rift less of an issue as well. Basically, if you know the Rift exists there are ways to play around it. Others in the comments will have good ideas about this but this is just some basic stuff we do.

Teferi's Protection did get a reprint, and it's cheaper than it was, but still expensive. Hopefully we can get even more reprints some time. :)

There's a reason I sneak a red elemental blast/pyro on every red deck I make (Naya, Jund, etc). That reason is called Cyclonic rift. Or Expropiate. They never see it coming. As a bonus, red elemental blast / pyro it's a valid target for Sunforger :)

I think Cyclonic Rift is overshadowing other amazing blue field wipes like Evacuation, Engulf the Shore, and Reduce to Dreams. I've cast Evacuation in response to destroy all creatures field wipes to make the caster functionally only field wipe themselves due to discard.

Narset's reversal, familiar's ruse, gutural response, Mana drain, negate, also frilled mystic is good cause it counters cyclonic rift and gives you a blocker.

Yesterday I beat a Cyclonic Rift. I was playing Urza and I already had nothing on the field-horrible opening hand (I went with the weird plan of charging up a Blast Zone) and had my Urza countered. A player Time Spiraled and I got a much better hand. Still nothing on my field. At one point, a player Overloaded a Rift and it didn’t affect me at all. Then rebuilding, I played my Urza again and in my following turn, I played my combo kill of Grim Monolith and Power Artifact and won.

Ghostway does almost the same thing as Eerie Interlude!

Sudden substitution is a workhorse i have used it against a rift and to great effect lol its a lil more broad than reins of power imo

Now that the death trigger is a thing I'm probably more likely to not overload rift and just bounce something slightly annoying to put them off tempo if the timing is right

Cyclonic Rift with Narset, Parter of Veils in play. Then cast Windfall. Add Narset's Reversal in there for the hell of it.

You could just play a card that you can name a certain card that opponents can not be cast and choose cyclonic rift. Council of the Absolute is a good one as it even makes the spell 2 cheaper for you to cast.

I feel kind of horrible but I am here to see what way that rift is countered because I like rift lol. Its was the first good card I pulled out of a pack

Banning cyclonic rift is the best option, however if this is not possible it was nice to see that I am forced to play blue in order to defend myself against this oppressive card The token not too white and red were nice but in my junk and sacrifice deck I do not have room for reverberate, and in my Gisela deck I certainly do not have the money to play eight affairs protection therefore these cars were not actually answers

Dualcaster mage resets itself when it copies Cyc Rift. Personally, my favorite remains Quicken + Fireball with Riku doubling to kill the casting player.

On Sudden Substitution, if you give them a creature with an ETB you'll bounce it back to your hand to play it again. Value town!

How to beat it? Just gotta play Blue yourself! *ecks dee*

You can tell the quality of a player by how much Flex Tape is on their copy of Cyclonic Rift.

Veil of Summer works for Green. Edit: I’m wrong, I thought it was protection from blue and black.

I personally don’t find anyone wrong with rift specifically and I have gotten backlash for that decision but I have just not had to many bad experiences but I also have the mindset of just shuffle up but also I have personally seen it used as a last resort rather than a game winning decision but all in all good video man Edit: #savethebauble

Disrupting Shoal requires one less blue card to exile though it does have to match the converted mana cost.

Amulet of Safekeeping, Avoid Fate, Dash Hopes, and Null Brooch are the only spells that may be helpful to stop Cyclonic Rift. Sundial of the Infinite will work if Cyclonic Rift was cast on your turn.

B: Make rift not affect you by having a sac outlet and payoff. Run targeted discard. Run mass discard. Maybe cards with madness or ltb's too. !Spawning pit is colourless and can 'save up' your creatures in case of the worst.! Hopefully a green player will know how to help because idk maybe just have a little weep at your dismantled state in mono g

That only works on a 2 mana Rift, not a 7 mana overloaded Rift - with overload, it doesn't have any targets.

ways to beat someone trying to beat cyclonic rift save it till you have extra mana and can counter there counter or in some cases use it as a threat to deter people from going after you that's what I did recently let my opponents go after each other cause they didnt want their board wiped

The lack of non-blue options here makes me wonder if WotC might ever print creatures in black or green or white with an ability like "This creature cannot be put into its owner's hand from the battlefield" or something. Sort of the bounce-proof version of Trostani Discordant.

Would make sense for white, they have tax and no you cant do that effects. Green I could see it on a treefolk, like it takes root and refuses to budge.

Reins of Power seems like the most fun. That player will forever think twice before casting CR in the future.

Another good way to beat rift is to force it out of someone’s hand. All of these options are worthless if the table is too afraid of the rift and just don’t hurt the player holding it up.

My favorite way to beat rift... is combo out with it on the stack. (My playgroup plays at the high end of power)

Before watching the video I would say Narset’s Reversal.

This card is an apotheosis of blue. I had it overload in response to Dragon mage's effect. I DISCARDED my hand. It ruined my day entirely.

My playgroup had a pretty good strategy for solving the problem that is a cyclonic rift. We just bitched really really really hard and talk massive shit whenever anyone plays that card and we did so to such an extent that we all got tired of being bitched at and we all basically got rid of our cyclonic ridt and we just don’t use that card ever because we’re so tired of all the bitching about that card.

Now let us never forget, talk to your playgroop first, but you can just rip the card up :3

Most of my decks have etb triggers so like if they bounce my board that's fine ill just cast a bunch of stuff and ruin the fun they had with regret and remorse

Let me be honest here... the best way to ever punish somebody who constantly has the rift... Flashing out a perplexing chimera. Take control of the rift AND get your chimera back.

Just gonna be honest, it really feels like the only way to deal with Cyclonic Rift is either to play Blue yourself, or have an expensive answer. :/

As a monogreen player I I literally have nothing. Best I've got is If I manage to have seed time I CNA have 1 turn to maybe build up a couple of things but that's pretty much meaningless when I've got a few cheap things back on board staring down my opponents perfect baord state.
