My favorite deck is my “Kiora vs Thassa” Arixmethes deck! It’s designed to tell the story of Kiora tricking Thassa and stealing her bident on the isle of Arixmethes. But here’s the best part: it still wins tons of games and plays at a consistently high power level. That sweet spot of flavor and consistency is really rewarding in EDH.

Someone at my LGS has a flavourful EDH deck, in the form of Sisay (WUBRG), with its theme being "Weatherlight" EVERY card in the deck has to have some connection to the Weatherlight and her crew. Meanwhile, I've tried building an Alesha, who Smiles at Death deck with a theme of "Build a deck inspired by a game character", and Alesha was modeled after Oda Nobunaga from Fate Grand Order. A Hellrider theme trying to emulate Nobu's Ultimate attack where she fires 3 thousand matchlock rifles, so every creature triggering a Hellrider effect was a rifle firing off.

The most Vorthos deck in my collection is my hyper-budget Seton, Krosan Protector druid tribal deck. A friend and I followed the Quest for the Janklord build restrictions, and I thought it would be fun to go for an "attack with lands" theme alongside the druids. It has some non-basic lands that can become creatures on their own, like Treetop Village or Mobilized District; and cards that can turn lands into creatures like Quirion Druid or Waker of the Wilds. It is surprisingly aggressive and very fun, but I really enjoy the idea that Seton and his druid pals are channeling their mana to raise the land to fight back against the threats. My favorite includes were other cards that reference or include "Krosa", like Baru, Fist of Krosa, Krosan Avenger, Krosan Restorer, and Krosan Wayfarer. I agree with Eric, that adding Vorthos "restrictions" to your deckbuilding can be very rewarding in its own way.

I just built a commander deck around Gadrak, Crown Scourge with the theme "Mono Red Smaug", with a lot of treasure generating cards, a dwarf-king, a city, a thief, dragon's fire and, of course, hoarding dragons. It's slightly optimized but not as aggro or burn heavy as usual mono red decks, there were even games that I sit with Gadrak unable to attack for several turns but I had a blast anyway. It's so fun when you can roleplay with your deck and it actually works, way more than simply comboing your opponent with the usual meta strategies.

Very little with cash value; I've never approached the game as a collector. But it is a ton of fun to go looking for an old card that fits into a commander deck, or even to find the old art of cards that have been reprinted multiple times. Its a fun way to say, "Yeah, I've been around this game for a while."

The only little nitpick that I have with this episode was this: next time you wanna talk about the flavor of Magic, I beseech you to get in contact with Spice8Rack (you mentioned his channel in your "What To Watch During Quarantine" episode.) He literally did an EDH decktech around Nikya of the Old Ways where you completely channel your inner End-Razer. So please, do this collab for a long-time supporter. Thanks.😁

Woah, someone else with Mitch in the studio! I do like trying to add flavor to some decks. My Nicol Bolas, the Ravager deck is mostly flavor themed, with a lot of the WAR Zombie Army stuff and also some Planeswalkers known to ally with Bolas. Plus almost all the Bolas planeswalker cards.

My favourite or at least the one that springs instantly to mind is my Jank creatures tribal deck, a few years back one of the spikes in our playgroup at the time was complaining about my folder of weird forgotten creature types (that I still have and add to, to this day) annoyed by his high roller attitude, I built a deck from the elite of my jank army, commanded by reaper king and unified by the enchantments that give creature types and multiple clone and bounce effects the deck was a force to be reckoned with! The deck has Noggles, Beebles, Eye's, kobolds, Bringers and even a zubera to name a couple. :D It goes without saying I made him eat his words!

I am 100% Vorthos! I had a desire to play Magic back in High School when I found a random Wyluli Wolf card in the hallway and loved the art! Didnt start playing the game til in my 20s, but the artwork was always a driving force. Then when I started to get into the story behind the frames, I fell in love even more. I'm more likely to build a Commander for it's art, flavor text, or a theme vs. how competitive it is. So good to see we're actually a sub-type! 😁

I also Made a Nicol Bolas Deck for Commander with All the Nicol Bolas planeswalkers, Liliana the Dreadhorde General, some Eternals for the Army, some of the Gods from Amonkhet, and plenty of cards that take from opponents. The Commander is Nicol Bolas the Ravager. I tried to find as many spells as I could that have Nicol Bolas in the Flavor text or image of the Card. It is my favorite deck.

My favorite commander deck is huge Vorthos. I’m a long time dnd player and DM. I ran Out of the Abyss a couple years ago and fell in love with the lore behind the Demon Lords, so I built a deck around Zuggtmoy the Lady of Rot. My Zuggtmoy stand in is Atraxa and it’s a thallid/saproling deck. I call it the Garden of Horror after one of the campaign’s set pieces.

I've had two flavor deck ideas. First, was I wanted to try and make a Scouts BSA themed deck to bring to camp. It was bad and never got off the ground. The other was I was trying to convince my DnD group, who also plays mtg, to design decks around our PC's and the DM could make an archenemy deck based around the BBEG but then covid hit and school shut down.

My favourite flavour-infused decks are my all-Ravnica Niv-Mizzet Reborn (using only cards that were originally printed in a Ravnica set, only deck that doesn't use Sol Ring) and my Mazirek, which I have tried to work an insect tribal into. Even though there aren't real insect synergy cards outside of Swarmyard, a lot of them synergize very well with Mazirek's ability, and the flavour of insects as detritivores feeding of the process of things dying (in this case being sacrificed) is very strong and a nice touch to the deck.

I've always appreciated this approach to EDH, even though I build all of my lists to best compete with my playgroup and our meta. I like these kinds of lists, and I hope that I am able to build one or two more like them for myself. My pet list so far is Marath, Will of the Wild themed after the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke, where Marath is the Nightwalker and his elemental tokens are Kodama "spirits". I use Decimator of the Provinces as an infected Boar god, the new Jumpstart commander Neyith is going to be my replacement Mononoke when it gets in. The deck is not amazing in performance, but just being able to tell the entire story of that beautiful film is so cool in EDH.

One of favorite decks is my Kytheon/Gideon deck. Most of the deck has cards all from Gideon's life, so they chronologically tell his story. It plays mainly like an "Oops all Gideons" deck with a Soldier type sub-theme. Even my Plains are the John Avon sunset ones from the core set to represent his "sunsetting". Also added in Gideon sleeves, Gideon Relic token for the life counter, and a Gideon deck box. It's not my most powerful, but it can hang in there, and I'm glad to build and have a deck like that.

I love theme decks, but what might be more fun for me, is when the theme of the deck becomes both fun and pretty good, like a deck I made for Shirei where the whole theme was just massive synergy with Shirei’s ability, while it plays a ton like any black sacrifice deck, it follows its theme incredibly closely, basically, building around the commander to a tee rather than building around the commanders colors

I will admit, if I can afford it or get it, I will foil most of my decks, but as for lands, there are a number of lands that just have that better look then others, and speaking of lands, I have always felt that lands are the heart of any deck and the heart of this game, and so I have collected A LOT of foiled lands, mostly basic lands, but I currently have just over 600 total and I will not stop any time soon!

Talking about pet cards, mine is Animar. When I first got into Magic, I would scroll through Google images for cards that looked cool, and Animar really jumped out at me. I had no idea about the commander format, and I had no idea how to build decks, but I wanted the card because the art, to me, was, and is, really great. A couple years later, I finally got one, and I built an Animar artifacts deck, because everyone expected a morph deck. It’s now more themed around X cost and Eldrazi for more power, but I’m thinking about digging up the original deck list and reconstructing it just to add some variety.

Yes hi, I've made a couple comments on other episodes about my Dominaria deck, and it is definitely a Vorthos deck, chock full of the Weatherlight saga and the Time Tears episode. Each card is potentially potent on their own, but most don't have any sort of synergy with each other, it's just fun and flavorful legendaries that Sisay, Weatherlight Captain can call to her aid. I'm really looking forwards to when my Chromactic Orrery arrives in the mail with Barrin, to help both improve the deck further and make it more flavorful.

Oh I absolutely love flavorful decks. I made a mono black deck with a reduced budget as a gift to teach my sibling to play Magic, with most cards that had "Plague" in the name, and Mikaeus, the Unhallowed as commander. It was a bit slow but it was about the theme more than anything else. I remember it not because it was strong (or rather not that much,) but because it was fun.

Lorenzo Macapagal My first commander is Anax and Cymede and most of its content are from the Theros block. I basically chose the power couple because when I was a kid, I was very passionate about Greek and Roman mythology. Over the years I got to improve the deck and more commander decks came. I made it to a point that the basic land cards should be from the plane or set where my commander came from. :)

Dude!! So I collect Star Wars cards by Topps and found these kmc outer sleeve sleeves. It sounds weird but they are clear and have a silver or gold filigree boarder and fit dragon shield/regular sleeves. Anyway so I pick out a sleeve I got in trade or for draft or in a single purchase, usually just for a colour or tint or because it's shiny. Then I find a sweet Star Wars character to represent my commander and stuff them both in that outer sleeve so one side is art and the other is my commander. I love it. My Teshar artifact eggs deck has Jyn Erso on the back because she hacks her way into reviving the noble hearts around her, gets sweet gear and droids and ships and well it makes for a white artifact theme for me :)

For this i've build a "golos, tireless PILGRIM" deck with all the SHRINE (that rapresent the milestone for his peregrination). In my original idea the deck have all the curses, but after a failure try i've opt for less curse for "optizimation" the pilgrim Path. I think theme decks are really key to EDH, especially for myself. Its how you get interesting and unique ideas and it makes deck building really fun. One of my favorites is my Lovisa Coldeyes Clones deck where the idea is to emphasize reds cloning mechanic that is often overlooked because it's mainly thought of to be in blue. Trueheart Twins gets real scary once there's 4 hasted copies swinging at you There's a lot of combos you can go for, but I cut all of the two card ones since they're a little too easy to get off. Still have Lightning Runner in because if I can make 3 copies of it and swing for those infinite combat steps then I've successfully done my deck right.

I think a potential video series (I've thought of writing articles about it) would be dedicated to talking about a single or a couple subthemes. Like '1 cost cmc matters', here's 10 cards you could run in W/x decks to change up your deck. Even better is when you make changeable subthemes to let you tweak your deck so you aren't always playing the same thing.

I love flavourful decks. I have a Dalakos story deck as he doesn't have much lore. I made it so his life partner is Queen of Ice giving ice defence strategy with frost lynx as a pet, deep freeze etc which I havent seen in many decks being used. Friends with Wizards & Faeries too allowing animating artifacts too. Frogify & Kasmina's transformation in there. Other combos allow bloodforged battle axe to be wielded by wizards or faeries early game, late game animate a few axes and equip those axes they become animated flying hastey axe creatures wielding multiple axes. Hella fun. Loving movies and other fantasy series I like building to fit a theme. Did a Labrynth theme recently. Squee filling Hoggal's role and Uril as Ludo.
