The Best Way to Move a Trailer With a Tractor

The Best Way to Move a Trailer With a Tractor
In this video I demonstrate different ways of moving a trailer with a tractor. I compare using the forks a receiver on the fork frame and an attachment on the three point hitch to determine which way is the best way to move a trailer with a tractor

At Rock Hill Farm and Homes we upload new videos at least 3 times per week, about our 20 Acre hobby farm, our John Deere 2038R compact tractor and other equipment, and the businesses that we run.
These businesses include a manufacturing operation, a Christmas tree farm, real estate investing, a lawn care business, and an online retail store. I demonstrate how I am able to use these ventures to earn a good living without a traditional job.
We have some cool toys and always think outside the box on our little homestead so come along for the ride.
You can expect new videos from us every other day, usually around 8 AM.

Dad built a front hitch for his 650 John Deere back in the early 90’s. It was great to quickly move trailers around. I built a bucket mounted receiver for a 1025 Deere the other day for a coworker. Good comparison of products on this video!

It is nice to have the ability to connect to the front or the rear depending on what implements you have on and what the task is. Nice explanation.

The one that goes on the end of the forks was pretty inexpensive and very convenient. I just don’t like to put a lot of weight out there. I’m fine with an empty trailer though Thanks for watching

Good comparison. I don't have to do this much, but good to know the options.

It’s been in the 40s and 50s the last week which is really nice after the subzero temperatures we had the two weeks before

I seen a lot of guys drill a hole through the fork and mount the ball directly onto the fork

Good video explaining options. Here's my concern?!?!! Forks are not engineered to handle linear force like pulling. They're designed to have downward force or to push forward only. It's not structurally hard mounted to the frame like a hitch and receiver. Granted, light empty trailer work is most likely fine but if the situation required force due to weigh or resistance bad things will happen. An extended receiver and hitch hard mounted to your loader but removable might be an interesting project.🤔 Much safer too. Just a thought. Keep up the great work and thanks!

I don’t think I really said it this way in the video but attaching to the end of the pallet forks is by far my least favorite way and I only use it for light duty work

Hey Brock..FYI the "reciever" is the part on the tractor. The piece with the ball is the "hitch". 🙂🙂

Do you have more maneuverability when using trailers vs the heavy hitch? One disadvantage of moving a trailer with your loader is that it will shift weight off your rear tires and decrease traction. Be careful on hills, and engage the 4wd, when possible.

I think moving it with a three point hitch especially for a heavy trailer is definitely the best. It feels natural driving and the weight doesn’t cause any issues. However for a short distance or lighter load it is often more convenient for me to do it with the front end loader especially if I have the backhoe or the stump grinder on the three point because those take a little more time to remove If you are using a quick hitch it’s very fast to take off something like a box blade and put on the heavy hitch

Sorry I move my 14000 dump trailer by clamping a bumper hitch to my bucket to move my trailers. 2 big 6 inch clamps. Heavy hitch makes a receiver the bolts onto the front frame of JD s

That's some expensive, and fragile, ballast you have there.
