The Best Way to Learn Horizontal Tight Gap Root TIG Welding

Ғылым және технология

Hello everyone.
Today is about butt welding in 2G horizontal position.
When welding pipes, steel plates, tanks, etc., there are cases where the gap is intentionally reduced to a small “fit-up” before welding.
We will introduce four essential elements in the "ROOT PASS" process when tig welding a tight gap.
In the future, we will introduce methods for application in 3G, 4G, 5G, vertical, and overhead positions.
Thanks for watching and have a nice week.

    The Google translate did not do a good job. you need an expert to come to your site. unfortunately many experts have no humility and are not experts with skill. The more one is sure of himself without a question it shows his lack of knowledge. At the same time you need confidence to solve it. In alloy metals many factors can be involved. Your questions must be more precise. He can make a video and it may not fit your situation.

    What I am trying to say is you may need him to come to your job to exam specifications. With Hastalloy and alloy welding it becomes difficult to provide answers remotely. He is the best I have seen in video. If you could get personal advice from him it would ve much better. Also my GOOGLE translate did not do a good job with your comments for me to read into English. I am glad you are bilingual. go back and see if your Google tool translated correct. His videos seem to have good translation.

    Numb question, relating to a possible future project: Would beveling both sides be preferable, running a TIG root (at the least) from both sides?

  • @jonitrost8124

    @jonitrost8124

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not a dumb question but read to the end. If you can see both sides you could bevel both. It will cost more and requires more surface preparation. This will require more weld. More welding may cause distortion. In his is presentation you can see and film both sides. This was a class demonstration. Many times in field or working situations both sides may not have easy access or access will not exist. Say a 10 inch pipe. You can not crawl in a pipe that size. Even if you had large diameters confined space entry is very dangerous and should be avoided. Let's say this weld was on a tank large enough to put a car inside. You would need to monitor the air quality and have a team to do an entry in a safe manner. Lets also go back to cost. The cost to back bevel a small plate like the demonstration would not be that much but scale it up and I think you can see how the cost is going to increase exponentially. If it was an alloy steal such as stainless steel we would have more complex problems that I am not going to address in order to keep this reply relatively short. I still did did not cover all the reasons for good root penetration. I have several more even for carbon steel. In his video he did address this but very quickly so he could keep it short. Keep asking questions. Be sure to observe everything with an open mind.

    When welding very large and thick steel plates or tanks, sometimes working by beveling the roots on both sides. And sometimes reverse beveling is applied. This is not necessarily a set rule, and it varies depending on the situation or working conditions. Sometimes it is applied for work efficiency. And it is sometimes used to prevent unilateral thermal deformation in one direction.

    Heat input is the relationship between.. amps, volts, and travel speed.. the slower you go (travel speed) the more heat input..( the more suck back you will get.) The more you go side to side the more heat input you get..( the more suck back you get.) Voltage.. is arc length or the distance between your tungsten and work piece.. by increasing the arc length you increase the volts, increase the puddle size, you get more heat input.. amps are self explanitory.. lastly.. the angle of your tungsten will change the size of your puddle.. the longer the taper.. the smaller the puddle.. this will also affect the voltage.. increase the voltage by increasing the arc length.. this will make your puddle just wider than the filler metal..you can increase travel speed to 5 - 6 inches a min.. and you can reduce the amps alot.. 80 to 100 amps.. you can free hand the root in half the time.. smaller puddle more penetrating..
